Pi Day Poetry++ Contest: Today (3/14) only! [ENDED: Winners posted] Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

Friday is 3/14, and you know what that means. Pi Day! So make sure to go out and have yourself a nice slice of pie and sing the praises of pi (and pie) to anyone that'll listen. And because it's Pi Day, why not praise pi and pie through poetry for a chance to win fabulous mystery prizes? All you have to do is compose a limerick pertaining to pi and/or pie. Pi(rates) optional. Need a refresher on limericks? Check out this page, or do your own web/library searching.

Post your limerick in this thread along with your Pirate Name and Ocean. One entry per person, please. You may edit your post up through the deadline, which'll be the end of Pi Day or 12:01 AM (pacific) on Saturday the 15th. I'll try to lock the thread at that time, but may be in too much of a pie-induced stupor to do so.

=======
As a side contest, I asked my crewmates to tell me their favorite kind of pie. Can you guess who likes what?

In alphabetical order, the 16 pie-hungry ringers are: Aphrodite, Apollo, Artemis, Bia, Cephalopod, Demeter, Eurydice, Me (Glaucus), Hephaestus, Hermes, Hypnos, Lelantos, Mnemosyne, Nemesis, Oceanus, and Roparzh

In alphabetical order, the favorite pies are: Cherry (the sweet kind, not the tart kind), Chicken & Mushroom, Chicken Curry, Chocolate Cream, Custard/Cream, Dutch Apple, Egg Custard, Key Lime, Mom's wet-bottom shoofly pie with whipped cream, Pecan (pronounced pee-can, not pih-cahn), Pumpkin, Strawberry & Rhubarb, and Sweet Potato

If you were counting pies, you might have noticed that there were only 13 types of pie listed. That means that at least one of the pies is the favorite of multiple ringers.

To play the side contest, all you need to do is reply to this thread with your Pirate Name, Ocean, and guess. Make sure to include all 16 ringers, incomplete guesses will not be counted! Yes, there's mystery prize potential for the side contest as well. You only get one guess, but you can edit your post up until the contest deadline.

It should go without saying but: Do NOT send petitions/tells/etc. to the OMs on duty asking about pie preferences. They will not tell you, but they will tell me, and you will be disqualified from both Pi Day contests.

To help you get started on your guessing, here are some hints:

1) The chicken pies are liked by lads.
2) Sweet Aphrodite does have a sweet tooth, but not for chocolate or custard of any sort.
3) My crewmates may think I'm crazy, but I'm not nuts. Neither is Oceanus. Or Nemesis.
4) The two developers have the same favorite pie as at least one other ringer, but not of each other.
5) Neither Hermes's or Artemis's favorite pie is orange. But Bia's is.
6) Maybe it's a coincidence, but the pie preferred by the most Ringers has its origins in the same geographic location as a past pirate party.
7) The other pie preferred by multiple ringers is fruit-based.
8) The chocoholic is not a lass.
9) Even though he likes to wear red, Hephaestus's favorite pie doesn't contain any red fruit.
10) Lelantos doesn't like the pie that reminds him of the band Warrant.
11) LOL cats taste like fruit, right Eury?
12) I've never had shoofly pie.
=======

You have from now until 12:01 AM Saturday March 15th to post your limericks, guesses, or both. You don't need to create a poem to play the side contest and vice versa. If you do choose to do both, please include both your entries in the same post. Prize types and quantities have not been determined yet. If you have any questions, please post in this this thread. Have at it, have fun, and have a happy Pi Day!

There once was day called pi,
When we sailed the blue seas high.
We cried "Haul the anchors,"
But the monsters tried to sink 'er,
And our ship went down saying Good-bye.

The pirate who first thought of pi,
thought he could use it to fly.
But it didn't quite work out,
his parrot use to shout.
because he ended on the rocks,
and did nothing but die.

I would try and do the side competition, but frankly I havn't got a clue!

If it is tasty pie you must eat,
Then you're in for a fabulous treat.

I will try to post this as close as possible to 1:59:26.5 pm (GMT!), so that I'm posting on Pi day at Pi time. I'm not convinced that my computer is an accurate time-keeping device, though!

A chef, discontented, declared:
"The top of this pie is impaired!"
But who could want more
Than three point one four
Multiplied by the radius squared?

As for the side contest, I believe this to be a trick, for there is only One True Pie.

Aphrodite - Banoffee Pie!
Apollo - Banoffee Pie!
Artemis - Banoffee Pie!
Bia - Banoffee Pie!
Cephalopod - Banoffee Pie!
Demeter - Banoffee Pie!
Eurydice - Banoffee Pie!
Glaucus - Banoffee Pie!
Hephaestus - Banoffee Pie!
Hermes - Banoffee Pie!
Hypnos - Banoffee Pie!
Lelantos - Banoffee Pie!
Mnemosyne - Banoffee Pie!
Nemesis - Banoffee Pie!
Oceanus - Banoffee Pie!
Roparzh - Banoffee Pie!

I added and appended some more pie hints to encourage more people to guess. It's not meant to be a full-out solvable logic puzzle, so don't think too hard over it. Wrong guesses aren't penalized, so why not give it a shot?

Regarding the in-game vs. real-life gender question, I'm going with the way that most people are familiar with the Ringers. In other words, this is based on the in-game pirates.

If ye ask how old be I
My answer is usually "pi!"
Oft I like to show
That 17 places I know
By heart - I'm a nerd, Aye!

Totally unrelated to the contest story: When I met my husband, who is a programmer and uses pi every day, the fact that I could recite that many digits from memory was a huge turn-on to him. For Valentine's Day this year he gave me an ultimately nerdy gift - a program that can calculate pi starting from any digit. Then it converts it to base 26, substitutes letters for numbers, and runs a search for my name in pi.

Geek love, baby. <3(.14159265358979323)

P.S. Whichever Ringers like pecan pie are my bestest friends ever. U shar plx.

Kiattia of Midnight

Pie tastes yummy and is cool.
Pi is what you learn at school.
Don't get them confused
Or it'll be bad news,
As you'll see 3.14 and drool!

(although the syllables on the last line are a bit out, I couldn't resist posting it!)

It's not meant to be a full-out solvable logic puzzle, so don't think too hard over it.

Leif of Midnight

Hot pie's what we all long for,
One's not enough we want more!
Two's not for me,
I think I'll have three.
Or perhaps a menage a 3.14!

Ringers and Pie:
So, I didn't just pair people by my favorites. Though I did use it as a tie breaker if undecided. I'm saddened by the lack of buttermilk pie though.

Aphrodite - Mom's Shoofly Pie, with Whipped Cream.
Apollo - Chicken Mushroom
Artemis - Cherry
Bia - Pumpkin
Cephalopod - Key Lime
Demeter - Egg Custard
Eurydice - Strawberry Rhubarb
Glaucus - Custard
Hephaestus - Pecan
Hermes - Chocolate Cream
Hypnos - Chicken Curry
Lelantos - Sweet Potato
Mnemosyne - Key Lime
Nemesis - Dutch Apple (Though I disagree with the not nuts characterization)
Oceanus - Key Lime
Roparzh - Cherry

There once was a fight that was quite one directional.
Pi mocked, "You're dumb, being imaginary and all."
Cunningly, the number i
Replied to the other guy,
"Hey, I may be unreal, but Pi, you're irrational."
