OCL - Season 4 - Rules (Edited 6/30)

Olympic Champions League

Event Details: Team Drinking, Team Brawl, and Sea Battle

Season 4 begins with just a few changes from last season. Please pay careful attention to changes made. Many of the topics were changed, or at least rewritten. We've tried to put all changed events (That we could remember) in Green titles so you don't need to reread everything.

Intro to OCL:

Olympic Champions League (a.k.a. OCL) is a league lasting several weeks in which teams compete twice a week against each other. This season we will have a Team Brawl league, a Sea Battle league and a Team Drinking league. The OCL is ongoing and we hope to continue it for some time, please help us to make this possible!

Unlike a regular real-time event this league will allow for more people to compete since everyone can specify when they are available and plan matches accordingly. It also takes away many of the problems with the Single Elimination system where one bad move will ruin your chances of winning. More games mean more fun!

Registration, match-ups, result reporting and the league table will all take place in the Events Forum. There will be a thread for the rules (this one) and a thread for each league in which to report results and view current team statistics. League stats will be updated by Poseidon (Sea Battle and Brawling) and Artemis (Team Drinking.) Scheduling is a combined effort of the two.

Thanks to all who have participated in the past as well as those who continue to participate and continue to make the OCL a fun event for everyone. Good Luck to everyone and have fun!

Terminology:

Season: OCL from Registration to Championships.
League: there are 3 leagues - Brawl, Team Drinking and Sea Battle
Division: Each league will contain 2 or more divisions. Each division will be determined at the beginning of the season. Teams will be sorted based (mainly) on results from their records in previous seasons.
Match: A Scheduled pairing between two teams. Depending on the League this could contain from 2-4 games.
Match day: Each league plays twice a week, each of these days is a Match day
Match time: The time(s) at which matches are scheduled on Match Days.
Game: One point/score, i.e. there are 4 games in a drinking match, 4 games in a brawl match and 2 games in a sea battle match.
Round: A term used in drinking to determine how many rounds will be contained in each game.
Swap: When you want to switch out someone on your team for another person, the person switched out may no longer participate in matches whereas the person switched in may.

Registration:

During the registration period, we will have a thread in the Events Forum for each league where teams can sign up. Registration requirements different from those specified below will be noted in the actual registration thread.

1. Team Name (defaults to "Team [Captain's name]" if none specified)
2. Team Captain
3. Team Mates (numbers dependent on the league entered)
4. Three Times and their priority (see next)

Each Team is to submit three times (from the below list) in order from most convenient to least. These times will be used to schedule matches against other teams. Anyone not submitting times and/or priorities will not be allowed to add this information once scheduling has begun.

1. 1pm PST
2. 3pm PST
3. 6pm PST
4. 8pm PST
5. 10pm PST

Scheduling:

Scheduling is done based on the following formula:
1st priority time = 3 points
2nd priority time = 2 points
3rd priority time = 1 point

Adding up the point values for each of the 5 times, we pick the one with the highest score. In the event of a tie, we give preference to a 2nd/2nd over a 1st/3rd preference spread. After that ties are resolved based on the following time preferences:

1: 6pm
2: 8pm
3: 3pm
4: 1pm
5: 10pm

Seeding:

Seeding will be done based on last season's results to seed the top teams. After that we will try to look at preferred schedule times to best match up a team with a division. We cannot promise anything, however.

Rescheduling:

Teams are welcome to arrange a different time to meet. To make an official reschedule, both teams are required to post to the forums as to the new day/time of the match. Teams have either: 1 week past the scheduled match day time -or- until 24 hours after the last match day (at the latest match time) of the season, whichever is shorter, to reschedule.

See "Forfeits" for further information on rescheduling in the case of a forfeit.

Forfeits: No shows and missed matches

If it happens that no players on a team show up 15 minutes past the scheduled time, the present team may take a forfeit and gain full points for that match. The present team must post accordingly (see "Posting in the event of a Forfeit.")

The present team has the option to make up the match. If they decide to follow this course of action, they should post accordingly (see "Posting in the event of a Forfeit") as well as contact the missing team's captain to reschedule the match. Results will be posted as if it were a forfeit until the team originally present posts otherwise. These rescheduled matches do *not* need to be confirmed in the league thread. Results from these rescheduled matches *must* be posted by the team who was originally present.

If no post is made by either team regarding a score in the 24 hours following a match, it will be assumed that neither team showed up and both teams will be given forfeits and full losses.

Game Updates and Rescheduling as a result of:

Any match which happens to coincide with a game update will be rescheduled if any party involved requests that it be so. Rescheduled matches in these cases will be under the same time constraints as regular rescheduled matches.

If it happens that a game update is released on the last match day of the season, we'll kick the dev's butts and post alternative scheduling. Apologies in advance if this happens.

In the event of another Real Life or in-game reason for postponing a matchday, we will post to the affected League Threads.

Swapping players:

Teams are allowed to swap a few team members during the season. A player switch is not considered official until it has been posted to your league thread, but it is up to the teams to check that the opposing team is legal. Swaps are to be conducted by the Team Captain if at all possible, in their absence any team member may do so.

We highly recommend that captains choose a "second in command" when they will be absent from the match to make such calls in their absence, feel free to post these members in the registration thread to be used for future reference.

Any player swapped out of a team may be swapped back in that same team only once without it counting as a swap if and only if the person swapped out is not a member of the original lineup (i.e. they were swapped in at some point.) This is a bit confusing, but it prevents the following case where you can get unlimited swaps for free:

A swapped out for B (1 swap)
C swapped out for A (free since A is being swapped back in)
D swapped out for C (free since C is being swapped back in)
E swapped out for D (free since D is being swapped back in)
etc...

An example of swapping:

Original players on team Brawl include:
A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H

During the season, the following swapping occurs:
A swapped out, X swapped in
B swapped out, Y swapped in

Current lineup:
C, D, E, F, G, H, X, Y

Swaps:
X swapped out, A or B swapped in (free)
Y swapped out, A or B swapped in (free)

C swapped out, Anything swapped in (1 point)
X swapped out, Anything other than A, B swapped in (1 point)

Swap Limits:

Each League has a swapping limit, which essentially limits the number of swaps you can make per match. This prevents a team from swapping in more than half it's original members and adversly affecting final matches to aid another team.

Illegal Swapping of players:

Any matches played with illegal swaps (for example someone who has been swapped out of a league being swapped back in) will result in the team with the illegal player forfeiting those matches, even if they have already been played.

Player Limitations:

Trial players are not eligible to participate in the OCL. Each YPP account may enter exactly one character per league. Any YPP account who has a character swapped out of a league during the season forfeits their right to enter any of its characters in that league for the remainder of the season (see Swapping players for more info)

Matches:
League matches are scheduled for two days per week:
Monday : Sea Battle
Tuesday : Team Brawl
Wednesday: Team Drinking
Thursday : Sea Battle
Friday : Team Brawl
Saturday :
Sunday : Team Drinking

League Format:

Each league will be divided into two divisions. At the conclusion of the regular season, we will use the following schedule:

Match day W - last match day of the regular season
Match day X - Set aside for tie-breakers
Match day Y - First round of finals: D2-1st vs. D1-2nd and D1-1st vs. D2-2nd.
- Other than 1st and 2nd places, teams will face the corresponding team (according to rank) in the other league (i.e. 3st in Division 1 plays 3st in Division 2.) The number of teams participating in the finals will depend on the number of teams registered for that league.
Match day Z - Last round of finals. Winners from the 1st/2nd matches in Match day Y compete for the title of Champion.

Posting Results:

Results need to be posted to the official League thread following a match. A team has up to 24 hours following the scheduled match time to post before a forfeit is assumed (see "Rescheduling" and "Forfeits".)

Please include the following in your post:
- Both Team names.
- Score (3-1, 0-4, 1-1, etc.)
- Individual game scores (if applicable.)

Please refrain from editing posts once made, as there is no way to know if you are fixing data or sabotaging it. We don't forsee this being a problem, but it's worth noting an edited post is not worth much as far as evidence.

Posting in the event of a No-Show or Forfeit

If a team fails to show for a match, or if they decide to forfeit because they do not have enough team mates, you are still required to post results of the match within 24 hours of the scheduled match time.

Please include the following in your post:
- Both Team names.
- Reason that the match was forfeited.
- Whether you wish to try and reschedule the match (see "Forfeits")

Results Table:

The results table will be listed taking the following into consideration:
1. Most Wins
2. Least Losses

Other League Independent Rules:
- Disconnects are not grounds for a "redo."
- Teams unable to muster enough players have the option of playing with "a man down".
- Team members do not have to be crew members.
- Team Captains are responsible for organizing their team as well as coordinating with other team captains for any necessary arrangements or scheduling.
- Rules in the specific League details overrule general rules if a conflict arises.

Extra Awards and Prizes:

League Champions: Compete to take your place as the championship team for a time! Win a cute little familiar to show off for a time, but don't get attached, they are only temporary trophies. The Top few teams will also receive some Poe to help them to afford therapy to handle the inevitable withdraw following the season. (Poe Prize money TBD)

These familiars are only a trophy of sorts and so will be passed on to the new Champions at the end of every season. Familiars will be in reserve colors so they can be distinguished from those won by other means:
-White Monkeys for Sea Battle Champions
-White Parrots for Team Brawl Champions
-White Octopus for Team Drinking Champions

The Following Awards will be voted upon at the conclusion of the season. A team MUST submit a vote to be eligible to recieve an award.

Sportsmanship Award: At the conclusion of each season, each of the team captains will be asked to submit a (team) vote of which opposing team they felt showed the most sportsmanship in either winning or losing. We are out to have fun with this, let those that have fun be rewarded too. One Prize per Division. (Prize TBD)

Smells like Team Spirit Award: We know you can drink and brawl, but can you also look (and smell) good doing it? Show your spirit whenever you by showing your crew (or team!) colors and bring along some cheerleaders to help you on your road to victory! Team captains will submit a (team) vote on the best show of team spirit at the conclusion of the season. One Prize per Division (Prize TBD)

Team Brawl details:

Players: 8
Swaps: 3 (see "Swapping")
Swap Limit: 2 (See "Swap Limits")
Games: 4

Rules:
- Only four team members will participate in a brawl match per team
- If a team cannot muster four members but still want to do the matches they may use "dummies" so the brawl can be started. Dummies must dismiss the puzzle as soon as the option lights up!
- Teams are not limited to crew members
- All Swords allowed

Sea Battle details:

Players: 10
Swaps: 4 (See "Swapping")
Swap Limit: 2 (See "Swap Limits")
Games: 2

Rules:
- Only 5 team members will participate in a Sea battle match per team
- Teams are not limited to crew members
- All Swords allowed
- Starting island and destination should be made clear
- You must provide your own sloop for the event
- Disengaging from your opponent will result in a loss for that game
- Blue ships should attack ones with the greater might (The Black Ship Sucks)
- Captains should communicate and arrange for ship repairs between games
- Sinking is allowed if two opponents are at war, this counts only as one win.
- Failure to produce a ship after your first is sunk will result in another loss

Team Drinking details:

Players: 4
Swaps: 2 (See "Swapping")
Swap Limit: 1 (See "Swap Limits")
Games: 4
Rounds: 1 per game
Game Setup: Default, Unrated if requested by anyone

Rules:
- Only 2 team members will participate in a drinking match per team
- Anyone may watch a match, play in a less public place if you don't like prying eyes
- Anyone watching the game may help either of the contenders. (Ruling otherwise will only give immoral players an advantage as there is no way to ensure it doesn't happen.)
- Each game requires 2 members from each team seated across from each other such that the order of turns alternates between teams. For example:

X O X X O
+---+ +---+ +---+
| | O| | | |X
| | | |O | |O
+---+ +---+ +---+
O X X

- The player with the highest score at the end of each game determines whose team wins, NOT a combined score.
- Ties will result in a rematch of that game
- Anyone caught duplicating clients for the matches will be banned from any future OCL events, please ask an on duty OM if you suspect that a team is cheating in this way.
- Anyone expecting to share a connection should mention this to an OM when registering for the season to avoid problems.

Conclusion:

A lot of rules here, but rather more reading now and less tarting later, I think. Again a big thanks to everyone participating and helping out, it's a lot of fun (and work!) and hope everyone enjoys it as much as we do.

Re: OCL - Season 4 - Rules (Edited 6/30)

Some changes from last season, we tried to put the new/modified sections in green, but we might not have gotten all of them. Registration is not likely to happen for a week or two at least, but in the mean time please read over everything asking questions about any confusing topics or making suggestions for changes.

Re: OCL - Season 4 - Rules (Edited 6/30)

Just to clarify, swaps refer to changing the roster, not the players you field for a particular game. Right?

For example, if A,B,C,D are on a drinking team it would be okay to play A,B in game 1 and C,D in game 2 and A,D in game 3.

That's correct. You can have 4 people on a drinking team, all can switch in and out of any match however they like. If you want someone other than those 4 people to play, you need to swap out.

I'll add swap to the Terminology.

Re: OCL - Season 4 - Rules (Edited 6/30)

So, in Brawl ye say

Only four team members will participate in a brawl match per team

Does this mean that on any given match day only 4 team members are allowed to compete, or can you change between the distinct rounds of that nights brawl?

Re: OCL - Season 4 - Rules (Edited 6/30)

You can change teammates mid-match, aye. If Players A -> H are on your team, the first game could be ABCD and the second could be EFGH while the third is ABEF and fourth is ACEG.

Maybe start yer own mate! Ask friends or crew/flag mates if they are interested. Maybe some of them has previous Team Captain experience and can take the role.

Can I advertise here that the Captain of last seasons team Cats of Combat is available to be drafted to a team becuase he is currently wandering the oceans crewless.

EDIT: And yes I know your team doesnt have to be your crew only. But my last season team was and that's why we were a team. I don't know if II is pulling together another team now that I'm gone.

Re: OCL - Season 4 - Rules (Edited 6/30)

Why are the days of each league not being rotated?

I have had a hard time competing in Sea Battle for the last two seasons because Sundays are bad for me... I was hoping to see a different schedule finally.

Re: OCL - Season 4 - Rules (Edited 6/30)

Match day Y - First round of finals: D2-1st vs. D1-2nd and D1-1st vs. D2-2nd.
- Teams will face the corresponding team (according to rank) in the other league (i.e. 1st in Division 1 plays 1st in Division 2.) The number of teams participating in the finals will depend on the number of teams registered for that league.

Maybe I'm confused, but aren't these two statements contradictory? At the beginning it says divA-1st plays divB-2nd and same thing for the remaining two teams. But then you say 1st plays 1st... So I'm confused. I think the first sounds more fair, otherwise you give as much weight to 2nd place (and thirds based on your last sentence in this quote) as 1st. Is it going to be round robin like 2nd (correct me?) season? or will it be a normal 2^n bracket tournament with partial seeding (1st plays 2nd or 3rd if there's a 3rd)?

Little clarification.

Re: OCL - Season 4 - Rules (Edited 6/30)

Greenwolf - We discussed changing it last season but decided against it, I'll talk to Poseidon about possibly switching it this season.

Trickykid - Looks like we just booched last season and this season's finals schedule. It should read as follows:

Matchday X: Div1 1st vs. Div2 2nd | Div1 2nd vs. Div2 1st
Matchday Y: Winner of Matchday X against each other and Losers of Matchday X against each other.

Essentially this means you can win by getting either first or second in your division.

I'll attempt to fix that now, please check that I've done it successfully as I'm not at my home computer just now!

edit: that would be y and z rather than x and y, but hopefully you get the idea

Two additions:

1. Extra prizes: A team may not recieve any of the extra prizes if they don't vote.

2. Match Days: Each league will be set back a day, so the following will be the schedule:

Sunday - Team Drinking
Monday - Sea Battle
Tuesday - Team Brawl
Wednesday - Team Drinking
Thursday - Sea Battle
Friday - Team Brawl
Saturday <none>

Yeah! I'm glad this made it in. I wish I had suggested it earlier in last season's thread about this. (not that it would have helped my team, but its a more fun format)

Aye, you can be in each League, you just can't be in any one league more than once. :)

1. Extra prizes: A team may not recieve any of the extra prizes if they don't vote.

2. Match Days: Each league will be set back a day, so the following will be the schedule:

Sunday - Team Drinking
Monday - Sea Battle
Tuesday - Team Brawl
Wednesday - Team Drinking
Thursday - Sea Battle
Friday - Team Brawl
Saturday <none>

I am rather pleased as this will probably mean I can now participate! Thanks Artemis (and poseidon?) !

- Teams unable to muster enough players have the option of playing with "a man down" (except Team Brawl).

Just making sure this is actually the case (a change from previous seasons). So you cannot get a "dummy" to suicide in the absence of a 4th team member?

I changed the above rule, and added a rule so you can play with a man down in team brawl
 - If a team cannot muster four members but still want to do the matches they may use "dummies" so the brawl can be started. Dummies must dismiss the puzzle as soon as the option lights up!

As for when we start. We have a party in SF in the coming week where many players might be away. So we're not starting before the party nor a week after it so people can get back home. But shortly after that!

Looks like my crew is going to be rather busy coming up here but I want to participate in this tourney. If any team needs an extra player I would like to play too. Overall, I consider myself a decent player individually but my best strength is in a team effort. I can gun well and sail even better. If you got an extra spot on yer team let me know.
