Err, don't try to use that with Internet Explorer. In order to use the script, you need Firefox with the Greasemonkey add-on installed. It makes some library calls, which will fail if Greasemonkey isn't installed. ---------------------------------------- Tanonev on all oceans; currently exploring Meridian. Puppetar by Tilinka |

I received a request via PM to post more detailed instructions on how to install this, so here they are: (1) Download and install Firefox if you don't already have it. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ (2) Using your Firefox web browser, go to the following site to install Greasemonkey: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748 (3) Restart your browser if it asks you to. (4) Using Firefox, go to the forum mute link posted above. Instead of displaying the script or attempting to run it, Firefox will pop up a window asking you whether you want to install it. As a general safety measure, you should view the script source before installing, to make sure the script does nothing malicious; if you can't read JavaScript, you might want to get a third party to verify its safety. I claim it's safe, but I'm the writer, so... (5) Hit "install" to install the script. Go back to a forum page and refresh. Mute/unmute links should then appear by every user name. ---------------------------------------- Tanonev on all oceans; currently exploring Meridian. Puppetar by Tilinka |

It works fine for me. Nice work, tanonev! My only concern is making my mute list too long... ---------------------------------------- Silveransom makes art like this or this & Blender Eggs! |

New feature: When viewing the threads in a forum, threads started by a muted user won't show up. Before installing the new version, it may be a good idea to uninstall the old one. Go to Tools -> Greasemonkey -> Manage User Scripts, select the script, and hit Uninstall (don't check the box to uninstall associated preferences, or you'll lose your mute list). ---------------------------------------- Tanonev on all oceans; currently exploring Meridian. Aye... I'm wondering if it's perhaps best not to publicly publish mute lists. Defamation and all that. ---------------------------------------- Silveransom makes art like this or this & Blender Eggs! |

I can see that. On the other hand, it would be rather obvious if a pirate was ignoring another one in some thread, and we would soon learn who is muting who anyway... ----------------------------------------

Deducing that should be fine, it's just the naming of offenders that may get sticky. The community-minded part of me says sure, name them so as to make the forums in general better, but in this day of legal buffoonery, it's best to tread lightly. ---------------------------------------- Silveransom makes art like this or this & Blender Eggs! |

Unfortunately, they still show up in the "Recent Threads" list. Can you fix it so that muted users' threads don't show up in that list either? ---------------------------------------- Janebennet, Hunter

Bump. I just got a new laptop and went to install the forum mute. Would you be able to publish the old version that allows for seeing threads started by muted players? Even if I don't care to read what they say I often find the responses interesting. ---------------------------------------- Orsino, Viridian ocean Forum-mute: your best friend

Delete lines 17-29 and line 31 from the script. (In the "if, else-if, else" block, you want to just keep the portion inside the else block.) If you'd rather not fiddle around with the script, let me know and I can upload an edited version later today. ---------------------------------------- Tanonev on all oceans; currently exploring Meridian. Sorry for the delay, just got around to this. I tried a couple variations on your instructions and kept getting an error on line 11 when I went to install. If you could upload that edited version I'd be most appreciative. ---------------------------------------- Orsino, Viridian ocean Forum-mute: your best friend

http://www.stanford.edu/~tanonev/ypp/forummute2.user.js I believe you need to uninstall the other script first, even though it has a different file name. EDIT: Alternatively, save the file to your computer, rename it, and (re)install from there. I'm not sure whether your mute list will be preserved across different file names. ---------------------------------------- Tanonev on all oceans; currently exploring Meridian. I added a couple bugfixes to deal with consecutive muted threads and usernames that were suffixes of other usernames. I also added a new feature: You can now zap an individual thread (say, a thread whose creator you have no problems with but that got filled with trolling from other posters) to hide it in the thread list. Zapping a thread is irreversible, so there's a confirmation dialog before the zap goes through. ---------------------------------------- Tanonev on all oceans; currently exploring Meridian. Is Greasemonkey currently enabled in Firefox? If it is, the monkey head at the bottom right of the browser window should be smiling. If it isn't, it will be greyed out and frowning. ---------------------------------------- Tanonev on all oceans; currently exploring Meridian. Puppetar by Tilinka |

I decided to go ahead and install this recently, and I made a couple tweaks that I feel boost the aesthetic a tiny bit. I wanted the post as slim as possible, so I removed the breaklines that were padding out the height. Delete both instances of: for (var x = 0; x < 5; x++) next.appendChild(document.createElement("br"));I also decided to stylize the mute button a little. After: var mute = document.createElement("a");Insert: mute.style.cursor = "pointer";You can stylize the Unmute button in the same fashion, I switched the backgroundColor to #beb for emphasis. ---------------------------------------- Firestone, Captain, Mad Tea Party, Cobalt Gallant, PotD, Midnight |

Ooh nice! I'd missed this somehow. Would it be possible to "unzap all", either instead of confirmation or in addition to it? That would allow a number of things: 1) temp zap of very active threads which will die down (e.g. tartfest on a different ocean, or limerick familiar event). 2) users could zap threads they only want to see once every so often (e.g. pictures thread) 3) if extended to individual fora, would allow those who use index rather than listrecentthreads to cut out irrelevant parleys and bazaars. 4) with a bit more work, zapped fora could also be detected in listrecentthreads. 5) in addition to a zap option, but using the same system, you could add a watch option. This could change the colour of the thread link to be changed to green say. I'll certainly update on the other computer I use more often; and zap the postcount++ threads like post one word games. Actually, while I'm busy making work for you :) 6) in addition to the mute option, have a forum hearty function, again all it does is change the colour of their names to green when using the appropirate viewmember?memberid= link. 7) since mutees still get shown as original & most recent poster, perhaps change those link colours to red? Thanks in advance if you can put some of that on your "LIST" :) Edit: You have zap forum already (I never read that column, hehe) ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dylan at Mar 20, 2008 9:45:41 AM] |
