Black Box on an 8x8 grid with 4 atoms has fewer than a million different board configurations. As a result, that version is almost certainly computer solvable. Like the Wikipedia article mentions, increasing the number of atoms results in boards that can't be solved.

In any case, I feel that just about any puzzle that can be played alone on a physical board (such as this, or Mastermind, which falls under the same genre) will need massive tweaking in order to become a crafting puzzle. Games like these were originally designed to be win or lose, not scored numerically.

I'll have to agree. It's much too simple to make a program that will solve it just by putting a few rays in. If there was a way to make it less computer-solvable and make it more crafting-like, it would be a vast improvement.
