The Grand Crafting Puzzle Project Reply to this Post

The Next Crafting Puzzle!

Puzzle Pirates is a grand work in progress, with a constantly evolving stream of new puzzles, prizes, and fun. Many of you have great ideas for new additions to the game, and now you have a chance to directly affect the course of Puzzle Pirates history and help us to create the next amazing crafting puzzle!

Starting soon, we will sponsor an event to design a crafting puzzle, which will be added into the game! This will be a huge undertaking, and we plan to leave it mostly in the hands of you, the players. We will provide support and mentorship; you will provide the innovation that makes it happen.

We will need plenty of help in all areas: leaders to administer the project, designers and programmers to make dreams into reality, and coordinators to help organize the project on the YPPedia. Most importantly, we will need your input to decide which puzzle you like best. Ultimately, you decide which idea will be implemented in the game.

We have devised a rough schedule for the project, but the specifics are up in the air, which is what the initial discussion is for: to discuss what you would like to see and how you would like to make this happen.

Our rough schedule is as follows:

PHASE 1 - Organization
  • Getting Started - The YPPedia will be used for hosting the entries while the game forums will be used for discussing the events. We need players to:
    - design the template for submissions
    - volunteer to help organize and manage entries
    - help decide on the minimum entry requirements

    PHASE 2: - Design
  • Design Proposals - Designers will submit their ideas on the YPPedia using the submission template.
  • Discussion and Feedback - Throughout the project we want a heavy emphasis on communication between the designers and the players, focusing on the improvement of the all the potential puzzle designs.
  • Selection - We must choose one crafting industry to go forward to the next phase. This is to be a joint effort between players and Ringers to choose the best potential entries.

    PHASE 3 - Programming
  • Programming - Each of the top puzzle designs will be prototyped using Game Gardens. These do not need to be anything fancy, just the bare mechanics of the puzzle so that players can test it for fun-factor. We realize that not all designers have programming experience, so we expect most projects at this level to be group efforts.
  • Testing and Playing! - Based on the prototypes, everyone will determine which they like best. Projects that prove themselves to be the most fun will move forward.
  • Refining and Polishing - We will work on polishing the best projects into better working models, complete with fancy graphics, sounds, and scoring.

    PHASE 4 - Production
  • Judging - This might be the hardest part! One of the puzzles must be selected to be the next great crafting puzzle! The Three Rings' developers will take the chosen puzzle, clean it up, and integrate it into a future release of Puzzle Pirates as the Next Crafting Puzzle!

    Misc. Notes
  • For this project we will be interested in the major shoppe puzzles: Tailoring, Weaving, Furnishing, and Blacksmithing.
  • We hope that the project will result in one puzzle to add to the game. If it works out, we expect to have similar projects to add the remaining crafting puzzles.
  • Designs previously posted to the forums may be used, however credit must be given to the original creator if another person is submitting the design. The original creator will have first option to submit the design.
  • We are not yet accepting entries. First we must organise the event.
  • We would like the final puzzle to be chosen by the end of the year.

    Discussion thread.

We have created a new forum for the project, entitled "Crafting Puzzle Project" which should be located in the Global section of the forums.

If you cannot see it, try logging out and in again to the forums.

Update: Apparently there are some problems with the viewing permissions, but we hope to have these solved soon.

The design period for the first round of the GCPP has finished. Now we will enter a period of playtesting, where all players are invited to play and provide feedback on the puzzles.

You may find a list of the eligible designs as well as link to feedback threads for each here.

The second round of the GCPP has begun. The guidelines have been updated and may be found here.

There are two fairly significant changes. The first is that designs may be submitted for foraging or construction. In both cases, designs should be multi-player, co-operative designs.

The second is that playtest versions of designs may be in any language. Java programming and the use of Game Gardens is no longer a requirement.

We hope that this second change will make it easier for playtest versions to be made.

A somewhat belated congratulations are in order as the Knightfish proposal has been selected as the next crafting puzzle. The developers are working on the integration of the design as Puzzle Pirates' official Blacksmithing puzzle.

With this announcement, I hope to see many new designs for the remaining crafting industries (weaving, tailoring, and furnishing) as well as co-operative designs for foraging and construction.

The developers have made their decision regarding the second round of the GCPP. The next crafting puzzles will be tailoring, based on the Platy design and weaving, based on the Haddock design. A large congratulations and thank you to all the designers and everyone who helped in the second round.

The third and final round should begin shortly. This round will focus on the one remaining industry: Furnishing.
