Flaws in the current system: -Faction chat was a good idea but it missed its mark. The chat doesn't get used for what it's intended. Global has taken it's place. -Global/faction isn't a viable way to find people who will help on non-regulated (PvP hunts, competitions) voyages because you just can't trust nobody is going to snitch on you. -The barrier to entry for organizing both non-regulated and regulated voyages is too high. Basically my only choice is to ask all my hearties if they are interested. This works at times, but sometimes there are just too many people who are busy/not interested. -Building up a list of hearties with the right skillset is a long and arduous process. It can take several months/years and is a process which never really ends as people come and go. There needs to be an easier way to reach out to all the people who'd like to participate in the things they'd like to play (but don't know where to find it). -Having to ask 15 people separately is inefficient and exhausting. It puts people off from organizing anything. Proposition Customized chatrooms which players can choose to join depending on their interests. For example a PvP room, a Merchant room, Ci room, etc? People that are interested in those particular activities can join these chatrooms and end up on a list that could look much like a hearty list but is open to anyone who is a part of this group. Now anyone who is interested in running an activity relevant to said group has a very good idea about who to ask on her next activity. In the next phase people can host their own groups within the main group. So I could invite 7 people in my group and if they accept they would all be a part of this sub-channel. At this point I have the option to instantly message the whole group about any intentions I may have. It could look something like this: Sen (subgroup name) chats, Got a target in sight, reply if available! The background color would of course indicate the main group. Extra Rank players depending on the trophies they have for a certain channel. A person with golden pooch could be rank 10 in the pvp channel. Show who are the new players. Reward experienced players who take the new players out on voyages through incentives like honor trinkets or poe. Add specific titles for people. For example a title for helping many new players, taking on a large amount of different players, etc? Benefits -Increased new player retention. -Increased player interaction. -Lower barriers of entrance to non-regulated parts of the game. Exploit prevention -Only allow 1 pirate name per IP. -Ability to show offline. -Too many denied invites = suspended from the chat. Tl;dr 1. Remove faction chat. 2. Add customized chat groups. ---------------------------------------- Sen ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Laryena1 at Aug 30, 2018 9:57:14 AM] |

While a useful suggestion - this would also be reinventing the wheel in terms of spending development time creating a feature other programs already implement. Have you considered simply using Discord, Skype, Teamspeak, Mumble, Ventrilo, heck there's been a lot; Or even just a Steam subgroup? Dark Seas especially is Steam Client integrated and Steam is now racing to copy Discord's featureset so - presumably somewhere in that possibility space is what you're looking for? |

Please read the announcement thread for the rules of the Game Design forum. There are many resources which may be helpful in finding existing discussions to continue:
If there's an existing discussion thread to reply to and it's older than a few months, be sure to call attention to the age of the thread. Including the word "bump" when adding new material will do. Custom/arbitrary chat channels have been proposed, almost certainly low priority back in 2004 as suggested by Cleaver's (founder of Three Rings Design which was the predecessor of Grey Havens) comment. ---------------------------------------- Avatar by Carribean |
