What does this number represent - the one under (Captain) next to the gold box...

That is the counter of booty shares depending on how long you were active in the current exploration from finish (leaving port after last booty division or ship reset, whatever was last) to end (booty divvy).
The higher the counter, the more booty you would receive (similar to ship counters on pillages)

Exactly how does it work? I see people get different amounts despite being on board the same amount of time.

I've always wondered about that too.

Exactly how does it work? I see people get different amounts despite being on board the same amount of time.

If the variation is by only 1 chest mark; then I've noticed that too.

All I can guess is that it might be a little bug in counting. *shrugs*

Some of it has to do with number of chests, etc. brought in.
