The Great Team Drinking Event - Jan 29 - Winners announced Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

The Great Team Drinking Event

Event Date: January 29
Event Time: 10:00am (detailed schedule below)
Event Duration: Depending on the number of entrants this could last several hours, please plan accordingly!
Event Location: Ice Ocean (see below for details on gaining access)
Registration Deadline: January 25 (end of the day) - registration closed

Prizes:
We're planning to deliver ingame prizes a few days after the event, after all necessary checks have been completed.
Prizes will be awarded directly to each team member who is eligible to receive one, no exceptions. All prizes will be delivered to the same ocean as specified during registration.

* There is no in-game equivalent for the real-life prize. If you want that prize, you must be willing to provide your real name and full mailing address so that the office can send the cards to you.

Links:

Time Schedule:
9:30am - invites to event location start
10:00am - Event officially begins. Background checks begin for all users, online or off.
10:05am - Teams without the minimum number of members must inform the event host by this time.
10:15am - invites to event location end; Background checks end.
10:20am - Matches are posted, raise your glasses!

Event Format:
  • The exact format of the tournament will be determined based on the number of teams who sign up for the event.
  • Each match will be 2 vs. 2 with one game per match and a 5 poe wager
  • Teams will most likely be split into one or more groups of 4-8 teams each and will play in a round robin format within each group.
  • The winner or winners from each group will continue on to a final set of elimination rounds.
  • Final Elimination Rounds may be bumped up to best of 3 or more if time permits.

Game Settings
  • All mugs are allowed, bring your own
  • Standard rules
  • 5 colors and shapes, play to 1500
  • 5 poe wager, Proportional take
  • Games should be local, but may not be private (we need to be able to watch!)

Game Play
  • Team members sit alternately at the table: A-B-A-B
  • Play continues until there is a winner - the winner of the game wins the match for their team. The score of the second player is only used if the win is a tie between one player on each team. If this happens, the score of the two second players are compared, and the higher one is given the win.
  • Remain at the table when the game is over until results have been verified by the host.

Event Rules:
  • During the background check time we ask that everyone help to check that all entrants are legal. If you find someone who is not legal, please report it to the OM host with a /tell. The OM host will not be doing any checks, so it's up to you to make sure everyone is eligible to play! Any problems with the legality of entrants found after the background check time is over will be waived.
  • All team members must be at least Broad experience in Drinking on their home ocean. If you do not meet this requirement by the start of the event, you will not be allowed to participate.
  • Wagers are required for all games, if your account is banned from wagers you will not be able to participate.
  • Any questions about the legality of a game should be brought to the attention of the OM host before it begins.
  • Disconnects once a game has started are not grounds for a "redo" unless agreed to by both teams.
  • If one of your team members is banned between registration and the event, you do not get a free swap to replace them; you will need to play with only 2 members or withdraw.
  • You should sign up in teams of 3, but the third team member is optional. Teams must have a minimum of 2 pirates to participate. Anyone without the minimum number of pirates by the appointed time will be disqualified and a 'bye' assigned to all their scheduled matches.
  • To be eligible for a prize, each team member needs to have participated in at least 50% of the games during the event.
  • Only one entry per player (not per account or ocean), of course.

Registration specific Rules:
  • Incomplete registration entries will be excluded
  • No changes to registrations can be made after the registration deadline. If you have not yet created your pirate on Ice, simply list your Ice pirate name as a question mark.
  • No "mixed" teams, all pirates on a team must have the same home ocean.
  • This event is open to all regular oceans, including Jade and Opal, but excluding Crimson and Ice.

Additional Rules:
These rules will be applied at the discretion of the OM host.
  • Any teams who do not participate in matches in a timely manner may be disqualified.
  • This is to be a clean event, anyone engaging in activities which are deemed by the OM host to be unsportsmanlike may be disqualified from the event at any time.
  • Due to the nature of the event any ties may need to be broken using a variety of methods including but not limited to: single or double elimination tournament, round robin, swiss style tournament, sudden death, best of X, etc. These will be implemented as fairly as possible, however, due to the nature of tiebreakers there will potentially be perceived unfairness - unfortunately this is unavoidable.
  • If you have any problems with any of the rules of this event please bring them up with us before the close of registration. If those problems are not resolved or explained to your satisfaction we recommend that you do not enter the event.
  • If any cheating is detected or rules broken, if one member of a team is found to be cheating or breaks any rules the entire team or any other teams who benefited may be disqualified at any time. We reserve the right to withhold any and all prizes if the situation warrants.

Access to Ice:
  • If you are accessing Ice through a subscription or doubloon purchase, verify that you will still have access on the day of the event.
  • If you do not have access to Ice, please note this on the registration thread and we will grant you a pass to Ice for the day of the event.
  • All requests for access to Ice must be made in your team registration. After the registration deadline no additional requests will be accepted. (We recommend you find a good friend to gift you a month of subscription time if you miss the deadline.)
  • It is your responsibility to obtain a mug and wagering poe before the start of the event. Mugs will be available to be won in tournaments leading up to the event or they can be purchased from a local Ice Distillery.
  • We highly recommend that you log onto Ice well before the event to ensure that you can get there. We will provide as much support as we can to help you get online, however, unless there is a widespread problem that results in a significant number of contestants being unable to access the ocean we will not hold up the event and will continue without you. Unfortunately we are unable to offer any compensation to you or your teammates if you are unable to make it online.
  • The Ice ocean is a testing ocean which means that there is the possibility that it may not be available at the time of the event. Should this be the case, we will postpone the event by one hour. If it is still not available at that time we will hold it at the same time and day on the following week or as scheduled by the OM host.

What do you class as the 'home' ocean? Can someone from Ocean A join a team representing Ocean B if they have broad drinking on Ocean B?

You can have 2 or 3 people in a team. The game is a 4 player game so you and your teammate play in the same game with another team. Assuming you have 3 in your team you'll have to rotate the players inorder to reach the 50% of games played and to be eligable for the prizes.

What if a player cannot afford the 5-poe fee? (Numerous reasons this shouldn't matter, yes, but I'm curious what the rules provide.)

You can have 2 or 3 people in a team. The game is a 4 player game

Drinking is a game for two to six players
Well, you could do 3v3.

It's a pity you can't do actual shared-row-control team drinking. (You wouldn't share stain color, so the Stein functions properly, but a 0+3 vs 2+2 row would go to the 2+2, which will not happen in this event, as the rules suggest it is not a team drinking code test, just a "team drinking" event)

Actually, 7 of 10 mugs would not need touching to work with Team Drinking allowing mixed-mug teams. Stein, flagon, and tankard would, though, as they can have effects on others' turns.

I'm expecting Chalice/horn mix teams to take prizes. Other apparent combos are chalice/pitcher, flagon/tankard.

Chalice should actually be an exceptional support mug.

Short answer: Yes. The "home ocean" simply defines the home ocean of the team.
If you meet the requirements on ocean B (broad drinking), you can join a team from ocean B. I suspect there are many players who meet these requirements on more than one ocean. In that case it's up to you to chose for which ocean you want to participate. Just be aware, that the team's home ocean given in the registration will also be the one where you will recieve the prizes.

So are there 3 or 4 players in a team?

Just to confirm what bobdonnell already said: Teams can have 2 or 3 members and matches are always 2 vs. 2. So if your team has 3 members you'll need to take turns to ensure everyone is eligible for prizes at the end.

What if a player cannot afford the 5-poe fee? (Numerous reasons this shouldn't matter, yes, but I'm curious what the rules provide.)

The wagers are a must. If you cannot afford the wager, I'm afraid you won't be able to participate. However, the total sum required should be pretty small and you should have enough time to accumulate the necessary poe until the event. As pointed out above there will be plenty of tournaments put up on Ice and we're not only giving out mugs in these tournaments, but also poe prizes. And there's still the good old navy, of course.
If you think getting enough poe in time might become a problem for you, maybe because you won't have access to Ice until the day of the event, you should probably work something out with your teammates, so they can help you out with a few coins, should you really run out of money during the event.

I couldn't seem to find it in the thread but although the event is on Ice, the prizes go to your main ocean?
Sorry, I found the answers -- thanks.

The event itself will be held on Ice, since we prefer to hold it on "neutral" territory. But if you win, your team will recieve the prizes on the ocean you listed as "Team Ocean" during registration (one of the regular oceans).

After a quick look over the registrations: Please do not select an individual name for your team. Your team has to be named after your team captain's Ice pirate, as seen in the sample registration. That way it will be much easier for us to keep things sorted and for your opponents to find you during the event.
An example: My Ice pirate's name is Thalia, so my team would be called "Team Thalia". If I used an alt called Thaliaalt as my Ice pirate, my team's name would be "Team Thaliaalt".

Single game knockouts dont decide who is the best. A league format, on the other hand where everyone has to play everyone, that would have decided who is the best.

Less than 12 hours until registration closes, mates! Make sure you get your team signed up before midnight (game time) today.
Please also make sure that you include a note in your registration post, if one or more team members need access to Ice. Requests that come in after the registration deadline will be disregarded.

Just curious as to how a round robin type tourney works for the group setting? Is that pretty much a mini doule elimination tournament? And for that round robin it is not best 2/3 correct? Sorry for the clarification, just trying to find the likelihood of making it past the first part of this team tournament!

Registration is closed now, as you may have noticed. ;)

Everyone who requested an Ice pass in the registration post, should now have access to Ice until the event (including the day of the event, of course). Time to create pirates, obtain mugs and earn some poe! Also, please let me know, if I missed anyone! The sooner you check, the better, of course.

I'm currently going through registrations and will post more details about the actual tournament/event format, as soon as I have them.

Here we go:
We have a total of 35 teams signed up. That's an impressive number! That also means this event will definitely take several hours, please plan accordingly!

On to the tournament details:
The 35 teams will be split into 5 divisions, with each division consisting of 7 teams. We'll start with the qualifier matches, where each team will compete against the other 6 teams in its division once - one game per match. The top teams of each division (most won games - we might have to break some ties here) will make it to the final rounds. That means we'll have 5 teams competing for the top places after the qualifiers.
Final rounds will once again be a round robin format, where each team will compete against each opponent once, best of 3 this time. The two top teams (most won games again) will then settle things in a final match of best of 5.
Matches will be posted in the room news of the event location.

Important!

If your Ice pirate's name wasn't included in the original registration, because you haven't created it yet, please take care of that now. Everyone should have access to Ice at this point. Please let me know as soon as you're able to. I won't be able to invite you to the event location, if I don't know your Ice pirate name! You can either post here or send me a PM (simply include Team name, ocean, home ocean pirate name and Ice pirate name). The sooner the better and ideally the team captain will take care of that for his team, so I get all names for one team at the same time. That would make things a lot easier for me.

As usual, please post here, if you have any questions.

Just to be clear: wins in the qualifying round will only matter to see who moves to the top 5 and have no impact on the top two teams that face each in the finals, correct?

Correct. Qualifiers only determine the 5 top teams that move on to the final rounds - one from each division. Wins and losses from the qualifiers don't have any influence on the final rounds otherwise.

Anyone who doesn't meet the broad drinking requirement won't be allowed to play and will be planked from the event location, but that doesn't disqualify his entire team. If your team still has 2 members left after that you can still participate with only two members.
If only 2 out of 3 team members show up you're also still allowed to play. You only need a minimum of 2 team members present - but no playing solo.

To quote the rules from the first post: All team members must be at least Broad experience in Drinking on their home ocean.
So, no worries. You don't have to have broad drinking on Ice, of course. The pirate you listed as your main on your home ocean needs to meet that requirement.

For your convenience, here's the complete list of participating teams. Hopefully that will make it easier for you to find your opponents tomorrow.
Names given in brackets still need to be updated - they're just the main ocean pirate names, not the Ice names. I'm still waiting for the Ice pirate names of these players and I'll update the list as soon as I get the necessary information. That means some team names might also change with the Ice pirate name of the captain.

Team Adrielle (Viridian): Adrielle, Ellenya, Kecapmanis
Team Alfwyn (Sage): Alfwyn, Nidhoeggr
Team Ayume (Sage): Ayume, Laddy
Team Boyk (Malachite): Boyk, Sagan, Doulber
Team Brr (Midnight): Brr, (Perkygoth)

I was happy to hear about such a drinking event going on. So I joined a team ready to take part in the event and have fun. What followed is one of the most disappointing times I had on puzzle pirates so far.

I created a pirate on Ice a few days before the event, made sure to collect all kinds of mugs and enough poe.
On the day of the event I was online 1 hour before the start of the event, waiting for the happenings to unfold. I had cancelled a rl meeting with friends so I could be at the drinking event.

After the broadcast came, saying that invitations were about to start now,
I checked the away messages of the OM's in charge of the event regularly and waited calmly since they said invitations were being sent. A few minutes after the official start time my team captain said on greeter chat that he did not get an invitation yet, I followed suit saying that I was missing an invitation too. Galene answered on greeter chat "Got you." My captain was invited then, but I was still not.

I then started to send tells to the OM's in charge. I got the answer from Galene that if I wasn't online at the start of the invitations I got no invite. But I was online then, without andy breaks. The OM's just seemed to overlook me. Then Galene sent me to the other OM, basically blaming me for not having sent a tell and saying I was not on her list but on the list of the other OM, Thalia. This OM never answered me at all.

From my view the OM's made a mistake, but didn't do anything to fix it. And none of them sent an apology. This makes me really sad. I know mistakes can happen. But then please say sorry and try to make up for it.

A very sad and disappointed Nidhoeggr who has the chat logs

This is totally not fair I demand a redo when ever I messaged an OM they ignored me, no where does it mention tie breaker rules. My team beat the other team the first time we played, therefore we should move on for head to head. You would only have to play again if there was a 3 way tie which there wasn't, therefore making our elimination unfair. I demand a redo or a change in the rules. :/

# Due to the nature of the event any ties may need to be broken using a variety of methods including but not limited to: single or double elimination tournament, round robin, swiss style tournament, sudden death, best of X, etc. These will be implemented as fairly as possible, however, due to the nature of tiebreakers there will potentially be perceived unfairness - unfortunately this is unavoidable.

First, I would like to thank everyone responsible for planning and running this event for doing so. It was fun despite a horrible start for my team. I hope we will see more events like this in the future. I would also like to thank all the teams that showed up. Without everyone there it wouldn't have been nearly as much fun.

Mate, the rules clearly state (as Look quoted) that ties will be broken via a few methods. The head-to-head match played prior to the division ending is not on that list of methods given by the OMs in the rules above. So it is unreasonable to assume that they will use that method of tie-breaking. Also, if you look at past white familiar events (the OCL) you will see that the method they used here is what they have done there as well. It was argued back then that the OMs should use the same ruling that you want here, and it was decided that it would not be used. I know of no event that the OMs have run that uses the prior head-to-head result as the tie-breaker.

You can demand things all you want, but that won't change the result or the rules of this event. The OMs picked how they wanted ties to be broken and they were done in that method. You voiced your objections at the event, and the OMs heard you. Unfortunately for you, they decided to go with the method of their choosing and not the method you desired. Continuing to behave like you are entitled to something here will do little but make you look bad. It would be my suggestion that you stop carrying on about the issue.
