[size=16]Sailing Bake-off Madness Date: Sunday, March 13 Time: 1:00PM Event Details: - There will be no announcement for this event. About 30 minutes before the start, Ajax and any officers in his crew will be jobbing people onto the event ship. Only the first 90 pirates on will be accepted! - We will hold three rounds of puzzling with each round lasting 6 leagues (For a total trip length of 18 leagues) - The ship will be ported at the very beginning of each round as well as half way through (i.e. every 3 leagues) - Anyone leaving the vessel before the end of the third round will forfeit any prizes or presents, while you are on board we ask that you take a duty station to keep the ship afloat as well as keep quiet for those still puzzling. - No navigator will be used - Participants are allowed to leave their stations. Anyone using this to be annoying or who makes a general annoyance of themselves will be planked. Participants may not, however, exit their duty station for more than a few seconds at a time, we're testing your puzzling ability over the full 6 leagues, not just 5 1/2! - Participants are responsible for being at the right place at the right time. We will tell you where you need to be. Get there as quickly as you can so we can get going! - No one may enter more than once. Space is limited, and winners will be checked! Suspicious activity should be reported. - The use of unskilled alts is ok, however, that alt may not be on a trial account, it must be on a subscribed account. - We expect the three rounds of sailing to last no more than 2 hours, so please plan accordingly when you join! - At the end of the last round we will pool all the scores together and rank the top few to determine prizes! Any ties will be broken at that time on a different vessel or navy ship, volunteers are welcome to come bilge/carpent and see who wins as long as they can behave! - If we run into problems, difficulties or anything that we feel causes an imbalance in the rounds, we will take the 1st place players from each round and do a tiebreaker with them for first prize! - Trial Users will not be able to participate, sorry! (Volunteers to run a greenie pillage at the same time would be appreciated so they have somewhere to go!) - Anyone leaving the ship before the end of that run will forfeit any and all prizes or presents PVP will not be tolerated. Prepare to be boarded, booted and your ship thrown to the ends of the seas without any rum or shot. Station Capacity is as follows:
Scoring: - Incredible: 5 pts - Excellent: 4 pts - Good: 3 pts - Fine: 2 pts - Poor: 1 pt - Booched/Learning: nada! Scorekeeping: - We will try to have at least 2-3 scorekeepers per round, which should account for any mistakes! - As a secondary check we will try to have someone taking a screenshot log of each duty report. - Volunteers will be needed to help keep score! Send me a PM or e-mail if interested, I'd like to have enough people so those helping can enter too! Guaranteed places for helpers, if you come on time. Prizes: Overall 1st - a Monkey in the color of your choice! 2nd -> 10th - pick one! Any tied players may choose the same or different prizes, however, once a prize has been picked it will no longer be available to anyone of a lower place. - Sloop named X-best sailfish (where x is your place) - Black Boots - Skull Dagger (no black or white) - Stiletto (any color) - Female or Male outfit: Swash Jacket/pants/shoes -or- Gown/Corset (no black or purple) - Female or Male Outfit: Stripey shirt/knickers/bandana (any color) - Fancy Hat (no Black) - Set of maps for the archipelago of your choice (adjacent interarch included) - 10 whisking potions Good luck! ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Artemis at Mar 7, 2005 6:41:52 AM] |

/e now thinks he may have half a chance at 2nd-10th Thank you blockaders! And, to make this post semi-relivant (but still spelled incorrectly): Why is it called a sailing back-off if it's all the puzzles (which to me it looks like it is, but I just may have by brain in me butt right now). ---------------------------------------- Cheers to those who are tired to being OK at everything, and exceptional at nothing. |

just the sailer's scores will be counted. the other people will be there only to keep the ship afloat - to keep the bilge and damage down. ----------------------------------------

I see a lot of "no black or purple." Does that mean that gold is now an option? ---------------------------------------- [Edit 36 times, last edit by Bifnot at Apr 1, 1863 5:21:07 PM] |

Is it possible that this wil be postponed to a time when world+dog is not at a blockade? Thanks very much to all the strong-armed sailors for coming out today - and hearty congratulations to Shuranthae, the maddest of them all! Jaenelle, along with Epicsaga, Sheo, Eyes, and Fluffycloud made him work extra hard for that monkey - they had a tie for first place coming out of the 6-league run. Jaenelle and Shur pulled ahead in the 4-league tiebreaker - after 4 more rounds, Shuranthae just edged out Jaenelle to take first place. It was a very close competition - congratulations to everyone who made it through the voyage...hope ye had as much fun as I did! Thanks very much to Ajax and Artemis for making this possible - and to Whitefire and Peax for their screen-capturing efforts. For the curious, here's the official reports: Bake-off scores: Epicsaga 4 5 5 4 5 5 28 Tie-breaker #1 Jaenelle 4 5 5 5 19 Tie-breaker#2 Shuranthae 4 5 5 5 19 ---------------------------------------- It's gingerbread and we love it. |

/e notes that back in october this competition would still be going on, seeing as he used to sail in the same fasion that Shur did the whole time, excellent, incred, incred, incred, incred.... Really kinda stinks though, like goin to take a test you've taken before and gotten 100% on, and coming out with a 75%... Mabey I'm just grumpy and irritable now though. Gratz Shur. ---------------------------------------- Cheers to those who are tired to being OK at everything, and exceptional at nothing. |

Anyway, bakeoffs, like any other competition in this game really, aren't a precisely accurate means of gauging skill. Basically you just do as well as you can for as long as you can and hope everyone else booches before you do. I just happened to be fortunate enough to not booch it before everyone else did. I mean look at the tie breaker round. It happens. |

As per sportsmanship, congrats to Shur. I would have picked the same color money if I had won. =p Then again, some of us were hit with some rather untimely disconnects that ruined our chances. =( ---------------------------------------- That was clearly yours. Congrats to all winners! And I liked that it was the same time as the blockades, because it gave me a snowball's chance of maybe winning. Which I didn't, but hey...at least I was up there :-) -Emerson, who was using an alt. ---------------------------------------- Cleaver shouts, "I lub this island." Personally I think that TITS are a technique if they are used less than once every three moves. Any more than that, and you're just waving your exploits in their faces. - Flamer |

Congratulations to Shur and the rest! I'm sorry I couldn't be there, but I got called in to work at the last minute. I'd like to think I would have been up there in the scoring, but - well, let's say I'm looking forward to the sloop race instead. >8) (And Grey's a lovely name!) ---------------------------------------- Kargach of the Midnight Ocean Captain of the Champions of Valhalla, and occasionally good at forum contests |

I still think holding the contest on the day I fly home from vacation was a massive conspiracy to keep me out of the competition. And of course, by that, I mean congrats, Shur :) See you all at the sloop race. ---------------------------------------- I make my way across the sea, upon a mighty brig, Searching for something lost to me: a pirate-worthy sig. |

Well, as for disconnects...I got the stupid combo at the league point bug, must exit and restart, not once, but TWICE! Though it pissed me off and caused an embarrasing score...I freely admit that even had I not bugged, I had no hope of winning or placing in this contest....it's just...you know, annoying! /em hates bugs ---------------------------------------- Selling my Grunion Collection! 174 ships, 164 sloops, ALL GRUNIONS! |

Yeah, I got nailed by that too, but by that point I was dead anyway after an opening league 'good' where I accidentally broke a cross-row I didn't mean to and thus messed my whole board. Just wasn't one of my better sailing days. At this point, I figure that bug's so well known at the high end, that avoiding it is part of being a top sailor, so I wouldn't have been bothered either way. I still want a coded 'duty puzzle challenge' to make tourneys like this easier to run with a better flow, though. For someone like me who puzzles more by instinctive rhythm than conscious calculation, scoring breaks are death [albeit, an acknowledged necessity]. ---------------------------------------- Vistr of Innocent, of Crimson Tide - Midnight, the grudge-holding ocean |

Pause right before league points and battles. Not only does it completely negate that bug, but it saves from the hassle of "Oh my god I'm a half-move away from Vegasing or screwing it all up!"
Though there is something to be said for instinctive rhythm, as you call it. During round one, the trip to Midsummer I played casually as I normally would, only filled up three stars from the star meter during the three leagues and I had the top score the entire time. The trip back I started with a horrible board (everything below the top two platforms were blocked, one was all white and the other was white/blue), I had to do what I refer to as "quick" sailing in order to make up for the bad board and ended up clearing almost all nine of the star meter in those same three leagues. Part of the skill is knowing what to do/how to play with what you're given. Oh, and during the third league on the way there, I had it paused for half the league with a Vegas+ setup thinking Ajax might whisk the ship back and trigger that bug where the scores reset but the boards don't (like what happened during the last bakeoff). Didn't happen that way though, to my disappointment. |
