Team Brawl

Team Brawl contest

Discuss the details here:
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3897

(this was used for the Grand Olympic tournament before Azure ended)

This is a contest between teams to show who is the best swordfighting team to represent the island at Sunday's Olympics.

The entire team must have the same home island, and compete on that island. Opponents may check your home island and if caught yer disqualified!

The winning team will become the island champions and will participate in Sunday's Olympics. The runner-up will be in reserve if there are no-shows on Sunday (which there will be).

Rules:
The team should go to the Inn on your home island (on Spring this is the Four Seasons).

The team leader needs to send a tell to the organizer that they wish to enter with the names of their 4 other team members.

Teams compete in a single elimination system. This means if your team ever loses twice to the same opponent, you are out of the running.

One team leader will be asked to start the brawl and should only start each fight whenever all announced fighers have joined. Misstarted brawls will be thrown out.

Teams fight best of 3. The team leader on the winning team sends a tell to the organizer with the result.

Remember that several brawls can be run on the same table.

Please be quiet when the organizer asks you to, or the organizer may disqualify your team.

How-to guide for the organizer:
The tournament starts with participants going to the Inn.

Team leaders will send you a tell with their team of 5 fighters.

Once all are registered pair them up in the order they registered in a single elimination system like on this website:
http://www.darters.com

You can run several rounds simultaneously on the same table but it's up to you how many you want to do, all depending on the amount of participants and time.

Call out the battles and ask one of the team leaders in each pairing to set up the brawl and to begin when everyone has joined.

Teams fight best of 3.

The winning team leader should report the result to you in a tell and include the record (2-0. 2-1).

Post the results with island name and the winning team and runner-up on this thread.

Make sure to give people more than enough information so they are never in doubt of the rules or what is going on.
Also if participants are being unreasonably disruptive you may disqualify them. Whenever possible OceanMasters will assist as well but they can't be on all 24 islands at the same time.

Fashion contest for Pairs

Fashion contest for Pairs

To discuss the details go here:
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3894

(this was used for the Grand Olympics on the last days of Azure)

This is a Fashion contest for pairs. We're looking for the best pair of outfits. Not the most goofy, or the most black but the pair that complements each other.

You may ONLY participate on your home island, opponents may check your home island and if caught yer disqualified!

The winning pair will become the champions and will participate in Sunday's Olympics. The runner-up pair will be in reserve if there are no-shows on Sunday (which there will be).

Rules:
Go to the Throne Room on your home island (except for Alpha which is upstairs in the Palace).

Choose one of you to be the spokespirate for your pair and have him tell the organizer both of your names if you wish to enter.

Put your outfits on and find a spot next to each other in the room facing forward either straight or at a slight angle.

Please be quiet when the organizer asks you to, or the organizer may disqualify you and your partner.

Judging will be conducted by the event organizer and/or any panel she appoints.

How-to guide for the organizer:
This is a Fashion contest for pairs. As taste is a very individual thing it's hard to set rules for what to look for. But we're looking for the best pair of outfits. Not the most goofy, or the most black but the pair that fits together the best in your oppinion. You may appoint a panel to assist you in judging.

Tournament starts with participants going to the Throne Room (except on Alpha where they start upstairs in the Palace).

A representative from each pair will send you a tell with both of their names saying they wish to enter the tourney.

Inform them of who will be judging but also not to pester the judges with tells.

Have the pairs pick a spot together facing outwards either straight or in one of the two facing angles. Once they've found their spots (which can sometimes take a while) tell them to remain in the spots while you take time to look at them all.
If you're doing the judging with someone else you may wish to narrow down some finalists among you making it easier to choose between 3-4 pairs instead.

Choose a winning pair and a runner up or a pair that deserves some recognition for some reason of standing out or being imaginative. The winner will directly qualify for the finals and the runner ups may be chosen to participate as well.

Post the results with island name and the winners/runner up on this thread.

Make sure to give people more than enough information so they are never in doubt of the rules or what is going on.
Also if participants are being unreasonably disruptive you may disqualify them. Whenever possible OceanMasters will assist as well but they can't be on all 24 islands at the same time.

Swordfight Tournament

Swordfight Tournament for individual fighters!

To discuss the details please go here:
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3893

(this was used for the Grand Olympics on the last days of Azure)

You may ONLY participate on your home island, opponents may check your home island and if caught yer disqualified!

The two best fighters on each island will be the island champions and participate in Sundays Olympics! Number 3 and 4 will be on the reserves list if there are no-shows for Sundays Olympics (which there will be).

Rules:
Go to the Throne Room on your home island (except for Alpha which is upstairs in the Palace).

You need to send a tell to the organizer that you wish to enter.

You fight best of 3 fights.

The winner sends a tell to the organizer with the results (such as 2-0 or 1-2 etc).

This is a single elimination tournament. If you lose a best of three, you are out entirely. If you win, you move on.

You may fight whereever you and your opponent want to (use tells to plan!!) but the winner must return to the organizer for the announcement of the next round.

Please be quiet when the organizer asks you to, or the organizer may disqualify you.

How-to guide for the organizer:
Tournament starts with participants going to the Throne Room (except on Alpha where they start upstairs in the Palace).

Participants will send you a tell saying they wish to enter the tourney.

Once you have all names, pair them up in the order they registered according to a single elimination system as you can see on this website:
http://www.darters.com

All matchups are announced between each round. Use shouts and make sure people are quiet.

Everyone fights best of 3. Winners send a tell to the organizer and return to the location where the organizer is.

It's single elimination which means losing any best of three round drops an entrant from the running. He does not fight anymore.

Once the tournament is over post the results to this thread with your island name and the 4 top fighters (semifinalists) with their place numbers. Two will directly qualify the other two will be reserves in case the winners don't show for the finals.

Make sure to give people more than enough information so they are never in doubt of the rules or what is going on.
Also if participants are being unreasonably disruptive you may disqualify them. Whenever possible OceanMasters will assist as well but they can't be on all 24 islands at the same time.

Duty Puzzle bake-off

Duty Puzzle Bake-off

To discuss the details go here:
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?p=37891

(this was used for the Grand Olympics on the last days of Azure)

This is a test of your skills in the Duty Puzzles: Bilging, Carpentry and Sailing. You will need to master all 3 of them in order to win.

You may ONLY participate on your home island, opponents may check your home island and if caught yer disqualified!

The top 2 will become the island champions and will participate in Sunday's Olympics. The runner-up will be in reserve if there are no-shows on Sunday (which there will be).

Rules:
Go to the Throne Room on your home island (except for Alpha which is upstairs in the Palace).

You need to send a tell to the organizer that you wish to enter.

You will then be jobbed onboard a ship.

You will be competing on all 3 duty stations bilging, carpentry and sailing. Find a station according to the directions from the organizer.

You may NOT dismiss your puzzle or you will get 0 points for that league, and no dismissing on league points either or you get 0 points for the following league. You must manage the puzzle at hand.

Points are awarded for: Incredible 3, Excellent 2 and Good 1. The score will be counted by Organizers at each league (and may take a while). YOU do not need to count it. The highest total score at the end of the journey wins.

Only rotate stations when you are told to by the organizer. Rotate in this order:
Bilgers go to Carpentry
Carpenters go to Sails
Sailors go to Bilging

Counting up scores usually takes a while if there are a larger amount of participants, so be patient. If you want the end result stay onboard or wait to read the post. The top 3 scorers will receive tells.

Please be quiet when the organizer asks you to, or the organizer may disqualify/plank you.

How-to guide for the organizer:
Tournament starts with participants going to the Throne Room (except on Alpha where they start upstairs in the Palace).

Participants will send you a tell if they want to enter. Pick a ship big enough to hold the amount of participants (Merchant Brig 20, Grand Frigate 150). Ringers can help provide a ship of the right size if you don't have any.

Participants will send you a tell saying they wish to enter the tourney.

Make sure you pick a ship that has the right amount of stations.
- A Merchant brig has 6 of all stations (bilge, carp and sails) and can therefore hold 18 participants.
- Merchant Galleon has 9 sails, 12 carp and 14 bilge and therefore only usable with 3x9=27 participants
- Grand Frigate has 29 sails, 16 carp, and 16 bilge and is good with 3x16=48 participants

Once all are onboard explain that they will all compete on Bilge, Carpentry and Sails in rotation.
Depending on what route you have tell them they will be rotating ONLY when you tell them to after x leagues (2-4 leagues).
Assign them to their stations.

Rotation order (give them time to find the stations):
Bilgers go to Carpentry
Carpenters go to Sails
Sailors go to Bilging

If they dismiss their station they get no points for that league, no dismissing on league points either or the next league gets no points.

Scoring is 3 for Incredible, 2 for Excellent and 1 for Good.
Counting up scores tend to take a while, so the more participants you have the more help you should have for counting scores (3 counters for 48 participants is recommended, one for each duty puzzle).
Highest total scores for all 3 stations at the end wins. If there's a tie backtrack the scores per league so that highest score in the last league takes the win. You need the 2 best and the 3rd for reserve.

If you have a lot of participants counting up all scores will likely take a while. Tell them they can stay onboard if they want to hear it, or they will get a tell if they are among the top 3. The results will also be posted to this forum.

Team Drinking

Team Drinking

To discuss the details please go here:
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3148

Team drinking is my new alternative to massive group drinking. I find group drinking to be lacking something, which working as a team seems to fill quite nicely (let me know if you agree!)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Rules:

1. Teams will be made up of 2 players. (you can have more, but I found less is better)

2. Teams play each other in a group drinking game.

3. Whoever has the highest score in the group drinking, their team wins. Winner splits any winnings with his/her teammate.

Disconnects: If a player disconnects before half the squares are stained, restart the match. Each team gets only ONE disconnect, if they have two they are disqualified.

Late: Players have 5 minutes to get to the contest location (or wake up!) before they forfeit.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anther method of playing: The team with the highest combined socre wins. I prefer the one above, but some may prefer this style.

Note the 4 year bump. Was this posted before tournament boards existed?

Aye, I'm not finding the right thread now (Faulkston will I'm sure >8) but I think tourney boards weren't added 'til a few months after the OP.

* Automated tournaments! The initial version of our automated tournament system has been released for your competitive pleasure. It is not laden with features quite yet, it only supports single elimination tournaments and does not support best out of three, but it does take care of all the other niggling bits associated with running a tournament and forms a solid platform that we can extend in future updates.
