Le sigh. I think I made a error during the tedious part and now need to start over :/ You've killed my productivity for tonight. ---------------------------------------- Smarfle of Viridian ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Smarfle at Nov 24, 2009 10:06:31 PM] |

Awww Smarfle, I know how you feel. I'm at 95% of the first part, but now I'm completely stuck, some clues just don't do it for me. Everything so far worked perfectly (although it took me a LOT of time) and now I'm at the point where I'm considering if I've made any mistakes, because I'm not making any progress anymore :(. Congrats, Harlech, you made me not even want to log on PP and puzzle for the past 24h. All I've been thinking about is this. It's a ... rare thing to happen :) ---------------------------------------- Ikke on Meridian and Emerald Veerle on Cerulean ~Avatar by Velternal |

I understand ye, mates. I'm trying to vary the puzzles some. Some people prefer to stare at a puzzle and figure out the "Aha!" Others like knowing what to do, and working at it for a while. At least two pirates have solved the tedious part, so I'm hoping it's manageable. ---------------------------------------- SIXTH Puzzle, Win an Avatar. |

Answer submitted !!! And I'm fairly confident that I got it right, squeee :) This was SO much FUN ! Very hard (especially the first part), but really very fun. So thx a lot for making these, again :) Now I'm left with nothing to do but log on PP for some puzzling, heh. Oh well, looking forward to a next puzzle already :) ---------------------------------------- Ikke on Meridian and Emerald Veerle on Cerulean ~Avatar by Velternal |

I didn't mean any offense at all, mind. Was just very bitter at my own mistakes and "wasting" over an hour fiddling with the computer. Finally managed to do it right thanks to the old pen and paper, and hopefully I got it right. Thanks again for the puzzles. You can definitely tell these puzzles are a labour of love, and for that we salute you. ---------------------------------------- Smarfle of Viridian |

You're totally welcome, mate. I didn't take offense. Your comment suggested you'd already spent a lot of time on something I'd worked on, too. That were my primary understanding. :) Plus, "the tedious part" is actually pretty apt. Depending on what part of a puzzle most appeals to you. Italics are loaded. My attitude at the time was "humorous grudging admission". I don't know why I'd imagined that'd ever come across in what I'd typed, though. In any case, no sweat.

EDIT: I asked a stupid question, and now I don't know what to put here. Sorry. Also this is an amazing puzzle even though I can't figure it out. ---------------------------------------- Sanjih of Viridian Avatar by Megalomaniac ---------------------------------------- [Edit 4 times, last edit by necro13 at Nov 28, 2009 10:14:20 AM] |

Aye, some of the clues are intentionally ambiguous. This is true of crosswords as well. The clue may have multiple answers, but in the end, only one should fit. Feel free to message me if you think anything is broken. It's tough for me to provide further hints without providing answers, but if you're struggling, I can try to clarify something without spoiling. (Also, I hesitate to say too much. Otherwise, I feel I'm being unfair to the folks that solve them without further info.) Good luck, mate! edit: Your question wasn't stupid, mate. I clicked respond with quote ages ago, but with a stack of holiday visitors, I haven't had time to deal until now. Sorry for the hold up. ---------------------------------------- SIXTH Puzzle, Win an Avatar. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Harlech at Nov 29, 2009 3:19:14 AM] |

Wow. I was totally looking at this the wrong way. I think I'm gonna solve this one in time! Thanks a bunch for the clarification. On a different note, has anyone gotten a correct answer yet? I just like to ask because there are some puzzles where no one ends up solving certain parts (i.e. question 3 of VATC Frederico ) ---------------------------------------- Sanjih of Viridian Avatar by Megalomaniac ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by necro13 at Nov 29, 2009 4:58:25 PM] |

Three correct so far. And two (maybe more) are very near. So you can be somewhat confident it'll work out. Good luck, mate. ---------------------------------------- SIXTH Puzzle, Win an Avatar. |

Well, I was sure I had it figured out. I did one last tedious bit and got... nothing at all. I really have nothing else to try, and unfortunately, I don't have any more time to work on the puzzle, so I'll just have to wait for the next one (please let there be another). Congratulations to everyone who solved it and good luck to those who haven't yet! ---------------------------------------- Sanjih of Viridian Avatar by Megalomaniac |

Here's the solution, mates. I'm sorting out the lottery now. SOLUTION: The answer is Cobalt. All the clue answers are mythological creatures. Horizontal Achilles' tutor's race CENTAUR Buckbeak HIPPOGRIFF Desert riddler SPHINX Ex-pharaoh MUMMY German house sprite KOBOLD German look-alike DOPPELGANGER Hat dyed with blood REDCAP Hindu shapechanger cannibal (masculine) RAKSHASA Horned hare JACKALOPE Irish potholder LEPRECHAUN Mozilla email client THUNDERBIRD North American yeti SASQUATCH Sexually exhausts sleeping men SUCCUBUS Southwestern US capital PHOENIX Winged figurehead GRYPHON Vertical Beauty is in the eye of the ______ BEHOLDER Brief Billy Goats Gruff obstruction TROLL Ceramic garden denizen GNOME Cabochon.com WYVERN Don't choose A, B, or D? PIXIE (Pick C!) Doom (1993) floater CACODEMON Enormous bird of prey ROC Horny labyrinth inhabitant MINOTAUR "I'm just curious, why am I so good?" WRAITH Irish wailer BANSHEE Lion-goat-snake CHIMERA Medusa GORGON One-eyed giant CYCLOPS One went down to Georgia DEVIL Rooster-lizard COCKATRICE Rosa Klebb employer SPECTRE Sometimes found in a maiden's lap UNICORN Tennyson poem subject KRAKEN Undead rumbler ZOMBIE Well-known fire breather DRAGON Wet (and sticky) Scottish horse KELPIE Winged crone HARPY Notice that there are 22 vertical clues (one for each column in the grid) and 15 horiztontal clues (one for each row). Find the above creatures and cross out their letters. (Seek and destroy.) Josiahk provided a perfect image of how this is done: ![]() If you look at the remaining letters in the original grid, you'll see a pattern. (The dark squares are the letters in the creatures.) The remaining letters read: FELEVEN or F ELEVEN or F11 ![]() F11 is the in-game chat shortcut for "Did you hear the cannon shots last night?" If you glance at the remaining letters again, you'll see the words DID and SHOT. Seek and destroy again. If you work from left to right, reading vertically, you can see (and cross out) the letters from the above phrase. This leaves one letter in each column: IRONOCEANNICKEL or IRON OCEAN NICKEL If you look at a periodic table, you'll see that the "ocean" between the elements between iron and nickel is COBALT. ---------------------------------------- SIXTH Puzzle, Win an Avatar. |

Congratulations to the following mates for clawing their way to the answer: (Listed in the order in which I received answers.) Once again, I used the random number generator here to choose from the solvers. Please PM or post what you'd like, and I'll do what I can. Thanks to everyone who gave it a shot. :) Also, thanks to me mates expecting avatars for not biting my head off yet. I'm working at 'em. I'm also working at puzzle seven, but I'm a bit buried. ---------------------------------------- SIXTH Puzzle, Win an Avatar. |

YAY ! Oh wait, that means now I have to think of something for an avatar, that's gonna be hard, heh. Don't count on it that I'll lose my drive to solve the next puzzles though. This was by far my favorite puzzle, so far. Probably partly, but not only because I solved it so easily, I solved #5 pretty easily too. It was harder than #5. I must have spent a whole night and a whole day researching and puzzling those words. I had several images in Paint, a Word-doc, an Excel-file (alphabetized the letters for rows/columns) and at least a dozen tabs on my browser open at all times. Some of those words, oh my ! I'll never forget Succubus, it was one of the very last I found and I had started reading this whole huge Wiki-list to find it (since I already found 95% of the others, I knew what row/letters I had to form a word with). And pixie ! I HAD found the word and it matched the theme, I just couldn't fit it with the remaining clue (pick C! LOL), thx for the hint there :). Gryphon was one of the first I found (hah, that and zombie, game-related), but I doubted it till the very end because it's not the 'official' spelling (it's usually written as Griffin). And Beholder ! Another really easy answer, but how was I to know it was actually the name of a monster too ! Only near the end I discovered that (was on the above mentioned list). Aaaah, fun memories ! And F11, lol. I had found F E L E V E N when I was still missing some words, so I figured I was probably on the wrong track. When I found the same letters again after fitting in all the words, I was bewildered at first. And then an epiphany: "F11, I need to check it in game !" Sadly, over the years, I've changed all my F-keys. No problem, I'll create a brandnew account. But the brandnew account had the same changed F-keys as my main one, lol ! Yppedia didn't help (did I look in the wrong places)? Luckily a search on forums did the trick, my next step would have been to ask a random greenie to press F11 (hesitant though, informing greenies about F-keys too often results in some kind of spam, heh). Thx for all that fun ! But I really need a new challenge now ;) Congrats to the other people who solved it or came close (pssht, I told you Apollo would like your stuff XD). I'll try to come up with something for an avatar, probably after the weekend though. ---------------------------------------- Ikke on Meridian and Emerald Veerle on Cerulean ~Avatar by Velternal |

Ah... I see! I went wrong because I was using the phrase "Did YE hear the cannon shots last night?", which could not be removed quite so cleanly from the remaning letters. I was therefore left with a bunch of meaningless letters. What a difference one simple word makes. Great puzzle mate! ---------------------------------------- ---Josiahk--- ---{Hunter}--- -{Malachite}- |

Amazing. I managed to get every clue after finding the 'mythical monsters' theme, which is good to know. Though i went the wrong way about "Searching and Destroying" and ended up with a bunch of useless letters, making me think some of my clues were wrong, after which i gave up. Loved the puzzle though, gave me plenty to do while pokering up some poe (poker is darn boring). ---------------------------------------- Deepseas on Viridian. Yeasayer elsewhere. |
