The usual caveats... any booched emails will be handled as they arrive. Day 4, with its unforgiving lack of partial credit, has narrowed the field just a bit farther! Now, I'm not saying the folks with perfect scores are the only ones who can win. I WILL say that it gives them the most room for failure when the final puzzles slaughter them in the eye. Who will claim the ruined ring?! (Or will we have an 11-way tie?) DAY FOUR SCORES The A-Team - 55 ARGGonauts - 30 Babellian Pescaditos - 69 Batten Cordon - 22 The Black Sideshow Llama of Death - 55 British Sea Power - 69 Circle of Convenience - 53 Dendarii - 67 Harlequin Opal - 54 I have No Friends - 66 Imperio Inconceivables - 69 The Inklings - 69 Jolly Seamonkeys - 64 Knightly Dose of Insanity - 60 Literally Nuts - 39 M.A.N.T.I.S. - 68 The Make-A-Wish Foundation - 64 Me - 38 Merry Readers - 69 Mlik's Masterful Minds of Midnight - 69 Monkey Puzzle Tree - 69 Moogles of Mischief - 68 Moose Of Doom - 66 Onna Team - 64 One Fish - 67 Parlia's Parley Party - 66 Preguntas y Respuestas - 50 The Privateers - 67 Puzzlers, INC - 50 Rogues of Prose - 34 Saga's Stalwarts - 69 Show Me the Monkey - 59 Sirob and the Rudds - 66 Small Man Complex - 67 Team Athenians - 53 Team Difference Engine - 64 Team Sea Slug - 65 Tiny Brains - 69 Walk the Monkey - 69 Well Red - 54 Wily Widows - 69 Writer's Blockade - 68 Wymounters - 67 ---------------------------------------- I have stolen all the fiber from your mind! MONKEY FUN SCORES!! Handsey and I were deeply impressed by this latest round of Stump Your Rivals. Thirty riddles went in, and when the smoke cleared, only twelve were left standing. Congratulations to those dozen teams! The scores are now: Walk the Monkey 10 The Inklings 10 Wymounters 8 Team Sea Slug 6 British Sea Power 6 Onna Team 5 Preguntas y Respuestas 5 Tiny Brains 5 Monkey Puzzle Tree 5 MANTIS 5 Babellian Pescaditos 5 Knightly Dose of Insanity 5 Batten Cordon 5 Writer's Blockade 4 Literally Nuts 3 Handsey is still very much anybody's monkey. So, like every good contest in the world... it's going to come down to the best chantey. There's no battle that can't be resolved through rhyming. ---------------------------------------- I have stolen all the fiber from your mind! Reminds me of Family Feud. "Hi I'm Louie Anderson, and here's the last round and we TRIPLE yer points, thus making the 1st 3 rounds absolutely useless!" :) BTW, this thread isn't meant in offense at all, just the first thing that popped into me mind after reading yer last line. ---------------------------------------- Iskra says, "You're the sweetest pirate I've seen in the the whole ocean" |

Ahoy, kids. LeJerque here, checking in from the dread Infomercial Isle with the very latest in rings and the ruination thereof! It's a good thing there's not much to do here, because I can't think of anything but the contest. Can you folks believe it's nearly over? Only 9.5 hours remain until the final deadline passes, and then all we've got left is to announce the winners... Or maybe not. I'm not even at home where I can receive answers, but given how things were going before I left, there's really no sense in pretending. Day 5 is going to end in a tie for first place. I don't know that it will necessarily be an 11-way tie, but more than one team is going to come out of this with a perfect score. Of this, I feel certain. So, I think it's time to discuss my back-up plan... EMERGENCY LIGHTNING ROUND PUZZLE-OFF! As I mentioned in a thread or two, here is the defined procedure for a tie game: The prize money will be divided evenly among the winners. In the event that two teams tie for first, the 50% and 25% will be divided between them, giving each team 37.5% of the pot. For three teams, we'll divide up the 50%, 25%, and 13%, giving everyone 29.3%, and so on. But, of course, there's still the matter of BONUS PRIZES, including a parrot, a war brig, and other swell items. In order to determine who gets first pick of those, we're going to have to have a tiebreaking showdown puzzle-off! The rules will be explained at the time of the showdown, but I think it would be prudent to pick a time to do it. Me, I'm eager to see this contest reach its final destination, so I propose that this showdown take place at the awards ceremony, at 12:30pm Sunday, 8/29. It shouldn't take more than half an hour or so, knowing our puzzlers, and that way we'll actually be able to give out the awards! If anyone has a better suggestion, here's the place to say it. Bear in mind, lads and lasses... to be eligible for this showdown, you'll have to have one of the top scores! So, good luck on the final day, if you haven't already solved it, and even if you don't win, you're still invited to the awards ceremony on Sunday at 12:30. See you there! ---------------------------------------- I have stolen all the fiber from your mind! Tune ye in to Shanty Raid-io! http://shantypp.servemp3.com:6328 |

Unfortunately for me I won't be able to make it to the finale at Alpha palace since it will be around 4:30am Monday morning before work :( So I wanted to say congratulations to the winner (or could it be winners?), and every team in the competition. And also a very loud huzzah for Mr. LeJerque! I have enjoyed myself immensely this week, and I can only stand in awe of the amount of work that went into preparing this event. Outstanding. I'd also like to thank my team mates, you guys rock! I hope you there will be more literary puzzles in the future, this has been the bestest fun :D ---------------------------------------- Jezabella Supposedly retired, but recently seen skulking around on various botes |

I just got home from my long trip involving multiple planes. =( How was the lightning round? Did British Seapower maintain their tiara from last year, or did one of the other teams wrest it away? ----------------------------------------

LIGHTNING ROUND RESULTS Maybe I shouldn't have rejected these puzzles. Out of all our top ten teams, NOBODY managed to get all six! Curiously enough, not everybody was thrown by the same puzzles. Maybe you should all be on one team together! For the curious, here are the answers to the lightning round puzzles. If you're wondering how to get there, ask one of the other teams--they'll tell you. Me, I'm tired. 1. Smee 2. Silver Salmon 3. Fictional 4. Zealot 5. Prawn 6. Towering And this, my friends, is the final order in which you finished... Saga's Stalwarts - 5 Correct, 2:29pm Wily Widows - 5 Correct, 3:42pm British Sea Power - 5 Correct, 3:51pm Walk the Monkey - 5 Correct, 3:52pm Monkey Puzzle Tree - 5 Correct, 3:57pm The Inklings - 5 Correct, 4:57pm Merry Readers - 3 Correct, 3:14pm Babellian Pescaditos - 3 Correct, 3:57pm Imperio Inconceivables - 3 Correct, 4:57pm Mlik's Masterful Minds of Midnight - Did Not Submit Ladies and gentlemen... I give you Midnight's cleverest pirates... Saga's Stalwarts. Congratulations to everyone who played... the Race for the Ruined Ring is now officially over. All that remains is for these teams, in the above order, to select their prizes. Please, captains, post your choices here so that those who come after you know what's left to pick from. The prizes, for those of you who missed the party, are: A Parrot (custom color) Another Parrot (another custom color) This Third Parrot (why not have a custom color) A war brig, the Dread Infomercial 20,000 poe at Njordstrom's An original LeJerque leWorque A five-chantey Skype concert Naming rights to a character in Literary Puzzles III Naming rights to all locations in Literary Puzzles III A date with the Looterati of your choice from the following list: Jacquilynne, Iole, Pierut, Cobrani, Madam, Hansel, Starwind, Kangy, and of course LeJerque To claim a parrot, contact Artemis or Nemo. To claim the Njordstrom's certificate, contact Pierut. All other prizes may be redeemed at your local participating LeJerque. And now, I'm going to pass out and not wake up for a month or so. My contest is ended, and now I have to decide what to do with all my spare time. Much love-- LeJerque ---------------------------------------- I have stolen all the fiber from your mind! Why not just give the parrot prize to all top six teams? The others got 3 points, while the rest got 5 and no one got all 6. Makes sense to me since there were many folks in the competition, and the parrots are divided or shared among the teams anyway. Nothing wrong with spreading a little more love. Congrats to all by btw, esp Monkey Puzzle Tree. I'm so proud that the Last Exiles pulled through so well. ---------------------------------------- Ace o' Hearts Captain of The Last Exiles |

On behalf of the Wily Widows, I'd like to congratulate all the teams who participated in this painfully difficult lightning round. I'd also like to do the hokey pokey to celebrate, please join me! We will also choose a parrot for our prize. Thank you LeJerque - this was an amazing, amazing experience. Edit: We'd love to see the deconstruction for zealot, by the way :) ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by Nuroticfish at Aug 29, 2004 1:06:20 PM] |

I assumed it was blaze with "not be" = laze anagram = zeal, and having it ordered correctly add a spot 'ot' Zealot But don't ask me, my team finished 9th. I'd personally like to know what this would have given away in its original context...? ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by toominator at Aug 29, 2004 1:55:14 PM] |

...and too excited to sleep, I'll give our answer reasoning: 1) My first turns a one to the many = S (forms plurals) My next spans an era millenial = M (either end of millenium, also the Roman numeral for 1000) My final two might be the swiftness of light mixed with bulk in a manner perennial! = double E (as in E=mc squared, mass times the speed of light squared) (for those curious, the only answer I got without help from my teammates) 2) Though my vessel bears a splinter, it may yet dispense a hint! Her name demands you flip the lithium around. = SILVER (sliver, but reverse LI, the chemical symbol for lithium) So just remember, girls and boys, untangle nuts that taste like poison, and omit the key with twice as sharp a sound! = SALMON (almonds (cyanide tastes like them) remove D and unscramble) 3) You're dismissed but not magenta, = FI (FIRED minus RED) couldn't burn what had dementia! = C (CRAZE minus RAZE) Are you listening?! I'm talking to you three! You couldn't get through half the circle, = TIO (TRIO minus R (letter not quite halfway through the word CIRCLE) so get back to shipboard work! You'll need to hammer that one down--no, THAT! Not ME! = NAL (NAIL minus I) 4) see above 5) we missed this one >8) but I'll guess: Now that drinking time is done, I've got to take a number one, = P (pee) which won't leave me a chance to cook my meal. = RAW But I'll find something to eat if I can separate a bleat from a tree-grown snack that's loaded with appeal! = N (banana - baa?) (our answer was pee + raw + nna = pirranha) (I still like our answer better, nyah) 6) "To everything, there is a season," but I fail to see the reason you should keep the vase you may just have to earn. = T (TURN minus URN) And if you're not puzzled yet, what will you do about your debt? = OWE This ruined bauble ends it, you may learn! = RING - Kargach, on behalf of Saga's Stalwarts ---------------------------------------- Kargach of the Midnight Ocean Captain of the Champions of Valhalla, and occasionally good at forum contests |

I'm not too happy with the way it ended - the rules never stated a most correct answers situation could be used, and I'd imagine several teams sent their answers later just because they didn't want to submit incomplete answers, meaning 'fastest' actually means fastest to get their last one wrong as opposed to fastest to get their other 5 right. It's been fun, but I feel the rules for the lightning round should have been made clearer when it started. EDIT: While I agree that there ought to be 6 parrot prizes, I don't think that sort of quantity would go down too well with the ringers. A second lightning round for the 6 teams that got 5 seems fair - after all, there's no way of proving who got their 5 right fastest - but now that parrots have been given out, I don't think snatching them back is an option either. |

I think LeJerque assumed we would all pick up on all 6 pretty quickly, unifortunately it didn't work out that way. It's a bit upsetting because we had our 3 correct answers really fast but didn't know we could submit them for several hours, so we don't really where we belong in 7th to 9th. Much worse to have been 4th through 6th though, agreed. I'd like to thank LeJerque anyway for overestimating us. Ye can't really fault him for that can ye? Umm yeah, just to confirm, we'd like a parrot please... And aye, positions 2-5 were all mighty close. But we're all winners, remember? We actually posted as soon as we'd come up with a vaguely plausible answer to the 4th riddle - wrong as it happens, so we could have posted earlier too - but that's the way it worked. "In this glorious fire exeunt, even if it's not to be. Only those who get the orders right may have a spot o' tea!" We were thrown by noticing that 'spot o' tea' is an anagram of 'potatoes' so we came up with 'fries' = 'fire' + 'exist' - 'exit', rearranged. We like it anyway, and getting it meant we finally posted - just in time :) it's been another rollercoaster LeJerque! Fantastic, but we SHALL have our revenge, oh yes!
