As many of you are aware there are people who have recently been compromising accounts, causing harm to our entire community. This has been done via brute force attacks, convincing people to click on a suspicious link, etc. They make all kinds of claims or use half-truths in an effort to cause as much uncertainty as possible, which allows them to continue confusing and taking advantage of players. This is not uncommon online, but it is incredibly upsetting when it happens to our small community.

A compromised account has the potential for a player who has spent years sailing with us to lose everything. We are committed to helping as much as we can, but this has meant delays in response times and our ability to release planned content. Again, this is their goal: To steal from other players and create disruption for our team and community.

For a while now we've been making changes to combat their attempts, but now the next updates will have a more direct impact on our players.

We have improved the minimum standard for a password.
  • Passwords must be at least 8 characters (preferably longer!) and must include upper and/or lower case letters, at least one number, and at least one special character from !@#$%^&*-_?+=~(){}[]<>.
  • If your password does not meet these new standards, you'll need to update it immediately:
    https://www.puzzlepirates.com/register/forgot.wm
  • Make sure your email address is associated with your account on the Account page. Associating an email address with your account allows you to receive important notices regarding your account as well as allowing you to recover a forgotten password.
  • You will continue to get a reminder notice in game until you update your account to meet the above requirements. Once you do, close your client and open a new one to stop the pop up from happening again.
  • If you are seeing the reminder pop-up in the game and log in through Steam, you need to update your Puzzle Pirates account password for the account that is linked to Steam, not your Steam account. Once done, Go to the splash screen (pirate selection), then unlink by clicking on the back arrow in the top left hand side of your client. Repeat and link the account again by logging in again.
  • Take time now to update the password and email for all of your accounts, not just your main account.

Portraits, trophy, information, and similar pages are being reviewed:
For now, you will not be able to view or edit text such as titles on trophy pages, public statements, or portraits. When you take a portrait, you will still be able to name it, but it will show as "temporarily unavailable".

Additional Changes:
There are a number of things changing behind the scenes. This means that sometimes we need to push out an additional patch or reboot, which may not have a release note. Please don't be alarmed if you see the servers rebooting a few times or your game updating more often than usual. We always try to minimize disruption, but sometimes critical changes cannot wait.

Thank you all for your patience, kind words, and humor during all of this. We especially want to thank everyone who sent in a complaint about suspicious behavior or sent emails with helpful information; you're what makes this community so special.

We hope that making these changes will get things back to normal as soon as possible, even though it is temporarily inconvenient for everyone. We'll keep you informed as much as possible.

Known issue: Players who log in via Steam and have never linked their account to a Puzzle Pirates account are still getting the message to update their password. This is not intended and we hope to have it resolved as soon as possible.

Ahoy,

We're looking into the use of an in game exploit mainly involving Rogue Marks being duplicated.

- For now, Rogue Marks are not tradeable.
- If you have concerns about your own inventory, please file a petition. Given the volume, it will take time to respond to your request.

As a reminder, if you think something is too good to be true, it is. You can always ask us if you aren't sure. Exploiting an issue, including profiting someone else's exploitation, is against our Terms of Service:
https://www.puzzlepirates.com/Terms.xhtml#A_Note_on_Game_Mechanics

Once again, thanks to those who have reported this person and continue to try to do what's best for the game and our community.
