  • At 8pm, an event will be posted, accessible on the Notice Board. You just need to click to join.
  • The event is on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you are late, you may have to wait for someone to leave. If you leave, your spot may be taken.
  • The event will be posted for ten minutes. Another five or ten minutes may be added, depending on participation.

  • The bake-off will take place in sea battle. You must puzzle for the duration of the round. Players who are not on a station may be planked.
  • The first round will last for approximately ten minutes.
  • The duty report upon returning to the island is what will determine placement.
  • The top ten for each station will advance to the semi-finals.
  • Players who do not advance may remain aboard, but must remain quiet and may not puzzle.
  • The semi-final round will last for ten minutes.
  • The top three will advance to the finals.
  • The finals will last for fifteen minutes.

    Prizes
  • Prizes will be given for the top ten spots at each puzzle.
  • First place is a familiar - A parrot for sailing, a monkey for carpentry, and an octopus for bilging.
  • Other prizes will be determined.

Does this mean that Hunter's Bakeoff Bonanza (an incredibly similar event), scheduled to run a mere 4 days after your bakeoff, will be delayed a while so we don't have two identical bakeoffs so close together?

I do not see any reason for that. Player events are run based on player willingness and availability. Similarly, I am able to run events as my schedule allows. More opportunities is a good thing for the enjoyment of everyone.

    Just curious:

What's the point of having multiple rounds if everybody can puzzle in the first round? Wouldn't it make more sense to have only 1 round that lasts 30 minutes and have the rankings at the end be the final rankings?

I cannot see any way to prevent it.

However, the vessel will likely have at least 40 people on bilge in the first round. If the water level ever raises above the baseline, I will be quite surprised. For subsequent rounds, if the water starts to go up, I do not believe it would drop again such that a crab would clear in this fashion.

    Familiar colours may be chosen.

Considering the recent bakeoff held by Bootlicker, and the off-ocean similar-named alts who walked off with 3 of the top 5 prizes on Midnight (referenced starting with this post here )...

Is this allowed? Is it too hard to prevent (in a timely manner)?

My personal feelings about the Midnight bakeoff: while it wasn't "illegal" and it was impossible to prevent, it was certainly shady and IMO not on the up-and-up, but I'm not in charge and will stand by whatever rules Bia makes for this Bakeoff.

Exactly. As always, players complain about the time. Quick, lets set it for 2am PST so that EU players can have a go and let the US players complain about the time.

As Bia stated, she does events as time in her schedule permits. Just be happy that they are running these in the first place since it is not required for the OMs to do such things (at least not that I know of).

Obviously the time doesn't and can not suit everyone. However, this is the fourth bake-off in succession which isn't at an 'EU friendly' time and I'm sure a lot more than a quarter of players on this ocean are from the EU...

Luckily, it's in the holidays, so I'm just going to stay up late or wake up early. Even that's hard to decide with the time it's at!

I'm sure eventually there will be a bake-off for EU players so I will just be patient.

They are still trying to determine the best possible way to run a dnav bakeoff.

There was one run by a player that was done quite well, but with the inability to have multiple players dnavving on the same vessel, it makes determining a winner that much more difficult.

Someday a dnav bakeoff will be thought of that works out perfectly.

Duty navigation is pretty much covered by the races now, which seem to me as fair a way as any to compare performance. :)

Hooray! An Aussie friendly time. *waves at those in Euro time* You can has blockades, 99% of the other events that are run in your friendly times. We have to get up at 6am to make the noon start of a blockade at the moment - and any other noon PDT event - and that's those of us in DST on the EAST coast, west coast is looking at 4am iirc.

The first step necessary would be a statement of the organizing OM if he intents the bake-offs to be open for off-ocean players or if he would like them to be exclusive to the respective oceans' players. The problem is that OMs seem reluctant to specify rules that they can't enforce by game mechanics. Trusting my fellow pirates I have the hope that stating the "Spirit of the Event" would prevent most abuse a priori.

I tried running a bnav bakeoff on viridian based on poe won in 90 min. While I didn't have a familiar to give away the offer of quintrupleing your winnings off the bots meant I was expecting to give away 300-400k to an ultimate bnavver.

The event was cancelled as I only received 4 entires.

As far as timing goes I am in the "timing of bake-offs could be better", though I recognise the work that the OMs put into organising such events, and there is only certain times they are free, and it is great to have them at all.

Sure no time will be convenient for everybody but I would guess that of reguar players there would be about 50% North and South America, 40% Europe and Africa 10% Asia and Australasia.

Weekdays at 8pm will be convenient to the west coast of North America and those in Asia and Australasia who are not working during the day (I would guess most countries do not have school holidays before easter as it is so early this year and most of Asia will not take Easter off at all, those out of scholl will not be able to make it. Rather late evening but possible for the East coast and possible South America, and the middle of the night for Europe and Africa.

If one time should be preferred for events like this I wouldhave though the time that most do not have work/sleep commitments is before the Blockade window on a Saturday, say at 8:00am game time. This would be Sat Morning in the Americas (possible a little early for those on the west coast but not too bad), Sat Afternoon in Europe/Africa. Only those players in Asia and Australasia would not be able to make it.

How about every few months switching off the blockade (like at Christmas) or reducing the window to 12/18 hours and having familiar bake-offs during the normal blockade time.

Good thing Viridian is on friday, I have an essay due sometime the week after.
I'm just curious, what time would it be in the Central regions of Canada, per say, Ontario. Not so good with time.
And for all those who participate, good luck :)

or is it safe to assume that all colors given on the yppedia are available to pick from.

You should always assume that where there's a choice of familiar color, the choice can only be made from permitted colors. So, for example, you would not be able to choose solid white or black familiars.

lol at all the negative comments made previous in this thread - booowoooo to you!

I for one think any Familiar giveaway like this on such a grand scale can be nothing but a good thing for the players of the game. Aye sure, am a Brit and the time is a bummer, but its not like the Brits, Americans, Aussies or whoever have a singular common time whereas everybody is happy with timing. End of the day the OM''s rotate Familiar Event start times periodically over the year so to those of certain nationalities who are complaining now am sure you'll have to put up with listening to complaints made by other nationalities in future events held of this kind.

Did the other winners get to choose their prize? How did that all work out?

Edit: To clarify, did the sleeping animal winners get to pick what sleeping animal they wanted? Also, why didn't anyone on carpentry get a sleeping animal? I'm just curious.

Also, fun event. I ended up getting completely owned on bilge (ended up with an excellent, >_<) because I started with 6 pieces, no jelly fish. My fault though, I should have spent more time raising my rank before-hand.

Second place could choose any sleeping animal, artifact, or either of the two prize eggs.

Third place could choose any artifact or egg.

Fourth through tenth had a choice of either egg.

I suppose the first place winners could have chosen any other prize besides the familiar, as well.

It's generally been stated that bake-offs and familiar tournaments are supposed to have the best of the best in them, regardless of home ocean. It's about the competition, not the prize.

Re: The Pick-Your-Puzzle Bake-Off - Three familiars on every ocean!
These events really need to be filtered to Legendary+. A player who is legitimately at a lower rank has no shot at winning.

It will solve the problem of everyone going inter-ocean and using gimp characters to gain an advantage (in sails and bilge, at least). It will also stop the ship from filling up at 8:00:45 /info time when I try to click and get a spot. If your rank is lower, you need to suck it up and practice more or just go back to Atlantis and be happy. If you're from another ocean, then you know how to raise your bilge/sails to Legendary within 10 minutes on any ocean (if you really deserve a spot on this bakeoff, that is). Allowing lower ranked puzzlers into these coloured familiar bakeoffs makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, especially considering they're being run in stages tailored towards skill players. It's like a 40 handicap golfer getting a spot in the U.S. open.

I appreciate the OMs for attempting to host them. However, if one XO can sift through 75 jobbers for an elite Atlantis run weekly then surely an OM and 2 helpers can filter through 150 for a coloured familiar bakeoff that happens once every 6 months. It will add 20 minutes tops to the setup time if executed properly.

I realize I'm whining, but it just sucks that I planned my schedule around this event and the ship filled up in 40 seconds when I'm easily a better puzzler than 90% of the people on it. Don't get me wrong, I have learned from my mistake. Tomorrow night I'm going to click at exactly 8:00:01 game time. It still doesn't change the fact that the system is flawed. I'm sure there are many other people in the same boat as I am and equally unhappy about it. I feel really sorry for Viridian players because not only is that the active ocean but people will have realized how fast they need to click and I guarantee you that when the Viridian bakeoff rolls around the Grand Frig will be at 159 pirates in 20 seconds or less (10, even, if it goes up at exactly 8:00:00).

    These events ...

The last multi-station bakeoff had 2 ships running simultaneously. The top few from each of those ship went to the finals. I liked that system, especially since it took some actual time to fill up the ship.

I'm not sure what you mean about advantage... yeah, you have an easier puzzle, but it has weaker scoring. Can you really pull a top incred with the beginner puzzles? If you can... yeah... something should be done about that. That's not the puzzle I thought we were competing in. I was under the impression that it was easy to score high and very difficult to score -extremely- high in the beginner puzzles.

Re: The Pick-Your-Puzzle Bake-Off - Three familiars on every ocean!
Yes, I can. Check Novo's stats on Sage then on Hunter. I booched the sailing rank to renowned purposefully because that is optimal for bakeoff scoring. /shrugs

edit: However, even an able is MUCH better than an ultimate in sails for bakeoff purposes. Bilge is debatable, don't really feel like discussing puzzle mechanics in this thread. Carp you need legendary+ to have a chance at winning.

You can.. For sails, able sailors can pull incredible easily. Higher chances to get top. For carp, you need to be at least GM and above to get better pieces. For bilge, as Novo mentions, it's debatable.

And I do agree with Novo, I got disappointed as I didn't manage to get myself on the ship. By the time I click the 'go' button, it says vessels is full.

For sails, I've flip flopped some, and found that entering on a pirate with ultimate sails tends to work more than anything else. Either way, Novo isn't exaggerating at all about how hard it is to get a station. Tonight I clicked the notice a few moments after it went up, and after all the lag, was barely able to find a station. I don't think filtering the applicants is the way to go, though. Too many people will want to enter on able alts.

Rhetoric I'm guessing Ridethesky is your alt? Mad respect for your sailing abilities. You're better than I am, but maybe that's why I find it much easier on a lower statted alt. There's a reason why the #2 and 3 finishers on Hunter were on respected alts. :P

I'm looking forward to see what standing the winners will have, especially on midnight. I've found master-ish much easier to build on, but ultimate seems to score higher. Of course, it is all relative to the competition, so I'm probably completely wrong.

Once again thank you so much Bia for the awesome event and other fellow bilgers for the opportunity to compete :)

I found a little coincidence: Hatchetback and myself both get #9 in Preliminary round, #2 in semi-final, and #1 in Final ^^

About alting issue, I did make an effort to get my standing up (to Apprentice/Ultimate) prior to the Bake-off, since it's my most comfortable level. However If so many people have problem with "alts" having low stats to gain an advantage edge over other "non-alts". I would suggest making a bake off with the entry requirement that is: You need to make a brand new pirate with Novice/Able standings, and no incredible trophies and there will be info checking at the beginning of the bake off (same requirement as those crafting puzzle bake offs where you need to get highest standing as soon as possible). Then everyone will have the same advantage and no one can really complain :)

And this was my earlier point. I hear "bakeoffs are about the BEST of the BEST competing". Yet the Cobalt bakeoff was half-filled with people from Hunter saying "haha hunter pwns coblat sux u n00bz!!" Those are the "best of the best", are they?

Your bakeoff was filled with rude people from Cobalt because ours was filled with rude people from Hunter. No, two wrongs don't make a right, but I guess Hunter shouldn't dish it out if they can't take it either.

Frankly, I'm shocked the whole thing is allowed at all. Sure, there will always be cross-ocean alts who are smart enough to just keep their mouths shut and puzzle, but why are people who brag they are from another ocean - and are dissing the host ocean in the process - not just planked from the ship?

There will always be alts at those events. Same ocean alts are one thing, inter-ocean alts are another thing. I'm annoyed by both mut mainly the second. However yesterday what won the cake was all of those people from Cobalt actually BRAGGING about not standing a chance but being there for the ONLY purpose of taking a legitimate Hunter player spot.

Congrats mates for totally ruining the spirit of that event.

The /mute button is your friend. I've been a doubscriber for a long time yet I've never entered an event on your silly ocean, so thanks for that :) You've got to be pretty dense to judge an entire server full of players based on the actions of a few idiots. See: forum poster "Whalebait"

Welp, despite all the usual inter-ocean complaints, yadda yadda yadda, whine whine whine, tart tart tart, it was still a fun event.

As I stated on the boat, I know where my place is in certain puzzles on Cobalt, but not a clue where I stand on other oceans. Yes I was shocked to place 3rd in the prelims, especially since I wasn't paying attention and watching tv at the time. Of course when I started paying attention in the semis I fell to 9th. So meh. It was fun to bilge against some names I have heard, but never had the chance to puzzle against...Rapportus being one of them.

So Cheers to Bia/Minthe for hosting, and Hunter for having the bakeoff this time.

Congrats to the winners as well.

Midnight ship LITERALLY filled in less than 2 seconds. It's not even a click fest because you get a blue screen from the lag. I swear if you have a slow computer (or a mac) you have absolutely 0 chance of getting on one of these ships. I will look at my auto logs after the bakeoff to see how fast it filled. There were only about 15 "boarding ship" messages after I got on, and I clicked instantaneously with a fast computer/connection.

    edit:

Jobbing offer went up at 23:00:47-48, ship filled to 159 at 23:00:50, blue screen cleared and first message was received from another player at 23:00:54

    :/

Maybe it's not "fun," but i'd say it's a little more fair to those who aren't blessed with insane puzzling talent. Many people that would win this bake-off have already won previous ones and already have familiars. Like it's been stated before, the fastest clickers win.

The rating system seems to have put a veil over your view of the competitive chances. I'm sure if there was a way, there'd be bake-off ships that're capable of holding 500 people. But, since there isn't, we'll have to live with the condition that fastest clickers win.

Myself? i'm only renowned in the puzzle that i plan on competing in, but i say i have as fair a chance at the competition as any of the ults out there on my ocean.

Alts won on Midnight, and the boat filled in about 3 seconds. *shrug*

On Midnight, there were 33 bilgers, and ALL the bilgers got 'Inc' on that first duty report.

Tonight on Sage, there were about 45 bilgers, and maybe 20 had 'Inc'. (I didn't actually count). There were several 'Exc' and 'Good' and one Booched.

edit: Frankly, I'm glad we have bakeoffs, even if they're imperfect. I appreciate Minthe/Bia running them for us. Yarrr.

Using standings as the requirement to get in still wouldnt eliminate the problem of inter-ocean alts and alts in general used in the event instead of main pirates. You'd simply have people before the events getting their alt up to that standing before the event.

What would do the trick is Experience level. Perhaps Weighty or Expert, meaning that pirate has to actually play on the Ocean to a certain degree to win. Those experience levels shouldnt be a problem for anyone who frequents an ocean.

Using experience requirements would eliminate a large number of inter-ocean alts, but many people use alts even on their own ocean. I've been in quite a few bakeoffs, and only once have I entered on a main character, and know many people who do the same.

Regardless, I think it is impossible to filter who joins. If we're getting 158 people in roughly five seconds, think of how many people tried to get in and failed. I think the best way to improve bakeoffs would be increase the number of boats used, having one boat for each puzzle like there has been in the past.

Re: The Pick-Your-Puzzle Bake-Off - Three familiars on every ocean!
I see nothing but 3 pages of complaints and 1 post thanking Bia/Minthe for the work.

Can any of you complaining actually run a bakeoff to this magnitude?? I would guess that it would be quite overwhelming. You all should be thanking your lucky pirate-parrot-feathers that Bia/Minthe even chose to run these bakeoffs. She doesn't have to, there is nothing that states, "A bakeoff must be run every month to give out familiars." Also notice the time that these are being run, not on Bia's normal shift, so it seems she is taking time out of her actual personal day to run this for the oceans.

So quit the tarting, and be thankful that the opportunity even exists in the first place. So you didn't get on the boat, boohoo. So you stayed up late and didn't get on, well go to bed. You all seem to be forgetting that this is a game and is created for fun.

To the person that stated more boats should be used, can you honestly imagine 1 OM dealing with 450+ pirates for a bakeoff? And don't retort with "well then use more OMs" since OOO is already minus a pair with the recent OM departure.

Yes, not getting on the boat is no fun for you, but someone else got the spot and is enjoying the fun. Maybe about time to stop thinking solely about yourselves and just think that maybe next time you will get the chance. I personally have been in many bakeoffs and despite the puzzling talent I feel I have, always get shut out. This makes me try harder and practice more until I can perfect certain puzzles. So perhaps instead of wasting time complaining, maybe go get on a boat and practice more. If you're Leg, shoot for Ult, if you're Ult, shoot for #1.

Now that this is over, thanks again Bia/Minthe for running these for the oceans.

I rarely tart and usually attack those who do. So this is my tart for the month :p

Plus I never said anything about the OM's and nor do I care about staying up cause that's my usual playing time. Personally I was just wanting to say how annoying it was that it took all of 2 seconds to fill, and a quite a few don't even play on the ocean. I know the OM's do the best they can with what they got. Just like Three Rings do what the can about the insane game lag. Doesn't mean we complain about it any less though.

Re: The Pick-Your-Puzzle Bake-Off - Three familiars on every ocean!
I have a pirate on (nearly) every ocean. I'm legendary (at least) at bilge on every pirate, with a bolded bilge stat (usually solid). Midnight is my main ocean -- the one I play daily. I just like bilge, what can I say? It would take me little time at all to raise that Solid to Weighty experience, which would then mean that I could not be excluded from "stat or exp requirements" bakeoffs.

Sometimes I like to use an alt on Midnight's bakeoffs, simply because I can focus on puzzling and not have to worry about tells or /crew or /fo chatter.

Yes, it's frustrating when getting on the ship is a clickfest, and you miss out. Yes, it's frustrating when people off-ocean walk off with the Big Prize (in multiple categories, no less). However, I'd still rather have some bakeoffs than none at all.

I had a great time playing on the other oceans, hanging out with people I normally don't see very often, and unfortunately won't be able to hit tonight's bakeoff as there's a family birthday party to attend. I was looking forward to it.

Criticism is good. Constant whining isn't exactly constructive though. Yes, there is always room for improvement on any and all events/bakeoffs that are run. Typically after the event is run a thread is setup in the Events Workshop forum in order to get a better feel for how to make things work out next time.

Typically an event will not change midway through because, well, then other oceans would complain that had to follow the event under the older rules/terms.

So criticize and help out, but don't tart, whine, and complain. Try to put it eloquently so that it gets read and thought about instead of, "well screw those oceanhoppers and the boat filling so quickly, make more boats for the bakeoff." Try explaining why more boats would make the bakeoff better and how to manage it. Throwing ideas around is a lot like having meetings, just a bunch of people together to inflate the already existing stupid. Give an idea, and a reason behind it, this will bring about discussion.

    Intelligence people...use it. =)

Thanks for running them. The skill level on the midnight boat was insane. I know I had fun, even thought I was frustrated afterwards for not making the cut to the semifinals. And I was one of those staying up to 4 am, just to participate. Its great trying your hand against the best of the oceans.

I was pretty sure one of them recently did 2 boats. I could be mis-remembering. Granted, it does take more staff and whatnot. I rather enjoyed this one, at least for the round I was in. I could get behind a rating limitation. Some early bakeoffs were done that way, so there's precedent.

Cheers to Bia, and the winners!

I understand the problems that exist with the bake-off format. A second ship is certainly possible, and will likely be used in the future. Unfortunately, in most cases we must run the bake-off with the tools we are given. For the most part, we cannot change anything coded into the game. The special bake-off vessels we have are about the extent of our ability to tweak things.

While there are a number of such changes that would be nice for bake-offs, it is unlikely that any event-specific (especially event-specific that would be limited to Ocean Master use) changes to the game will gain a higher priority than any currently planned additions.

Also, if the whisk to a full ship caused your client to hang on a blue screen, I do hope you submitted a bug report. I do not know if this is limited to only the bake-off vessels, but I did receive a few tells to that effect over the course of the week.

i think its great having these bakeoffs and know its done out of time the om's have so i appreciate it like everyone else does

but people have a point rashnu dude

whats the point of having bakeoffs on other oceans when the inter-ocean people fill the bakeoff ship and take all the spots for others native to the ocean itself, that doesnt sound fair at all to me to the natives otherwise whats the point of having the bakeoffs on different oceans in the first place? i dun get it

I think the only solution to that would be to hold all-ocean bakeoffs like they did at least once before (2005?) but that would mean getting more than one OM involved. With the recent departure of two OMs, I doubt we'll get to see that for quite some time.

Thanks for the event Bia! I've hills and mountains to climb before I get to win something in these.. lol 'x',)

The other approach is to do unannounced bake-offs as was done a few months ago (Think it was Christmas). Unfortunately I was on a trade run at the time and by the time I got to the nearest port the bake-off ship was full. The only downside of this approch is if you are navving in atlantis and suddenly lose half your crew.

Impromptu bake-offs could still trigger cross-ocean alts though if you happen to be online in both oceans for some reason. One tell could go a long way too.

I guess, but the likelyhood of it being someone who could win a big prize or prize at all is very small. Go look at the results of the previous impromptu bake-off. I can't speak for your ocean but it was a huge success in the Viridian and every person in the top 10 was from that ocean. One tell could go a long way, but it would have to be in a very short amount of time! These bake-offs fill fast you know, Janepeg even said herself she was too late by the time she got to the nearest port.

There were some problems like Janepeg mentioned with some poor crew running an atlantis at that time sinking because everyone left. I don't think there are any plans to solve this problem but since these things only come like once a year I say put up with it.

I did give a possible solution at the time, Ships in a sinking situation (excluding wars) could be offered a free whisk back to port. The OM said that the bake-off was times to avoid blockades so the only ships in a sinking situation would be in sinking flotilas and atlantis I doubt whether there are more than 5 or 6 ships in this situation at a time.

Ok, so I'm just getting caught up here on my forum'ing that was put off do to a nasty flu bug.

I'd like to say one thing, if I may. These things are incredibly hard to predict. I was at the last bak-eoff, on several oceans, and I remember one ocean was supposed to have 2 ships, but then we couldn't even really fill up one after waiting something silly like 20 minutes, so the rules changed down to only 1 ship. Everybody tarted so mad. This time an unprecedented number of folks showed up, and I'm not even sure 2 ships would have been enough, ha.

It's like any local restaurant or store. They do their best to anticipate your need and make sure they're stocked well enough to meet that need without being ridiculously overstocked and having food go bad unpurchased. They get their numbers on a regular basis and can make small adjustments in either direction a lot easier. Bake-off participation is a lot more difficult to predict, please keep in mind, but I'm sure EACH time they're taking the information into account and refining the process for future events.

I got on Midnight on my slow arse antiquated machine, but then I nosedived my actual performance because I am teh suck and was still sick! <3 Bia/Minthe for running it.
