[Contest] Who Wants to be Hades' Governor?
Hades, Lord of the Underworld, needs your help!

He has taken control of Jorvik Island (Midnight) and Sakejima Island (Cobalt and Viridian) to establish his vacation home, but he doesn't know what else to do.

This is where you come in.

Players are requested to draft a plan of action. This will detail how they propose the island in question will be run. Put your thinking caps on, and get creative!

The rules:

1. Draft up a plan for how you would manage and run an island.

2. See the judging criteria below and the example plan to get an idea of how to go about with this.

3. Players must include the name of their pirate and ocean of play. The plans should be specific to the island on that ocean.

4. Entries are due on October 24th at 11:59 pm, Pacific Time.

5. Post entries to this thread. The thread will be locked at the deadline.

The judging:

The judges will consider all plans with the following criteria, in roughly this order of importance:

1. Feasibility. The plans should be possible to put into action under the current rules of the game.

2. Independence. While some OM assistance is available, plans which can be put into action without such will be valued more highly.

3. Creativity. Original and unique ideas will be valued more.

4. Fun. Creative ways of conveying the plan (without losing clarity) are good for brownie points.

An Example Plan

Hecubus came up with this one, but it sucks, so we fired him.

Plan to install Master upon the throne of Jorvik!

Using spoons, we shall tunnel under the island and undermine the foundations of the very palace itself.

When the palace crumbles, we shall step in and save the people from their inevitable tumble towards barbarism.

After we build a new citidel to the master, we shall tax them into oblivion.

Upon a mountain of our crushed underlings, we will relax with pina coladas and enjoy our well-earned vacation.

Master will be pleasured by 71 alabaster virgins. I shall take one of the extras for myself.

The prizes:

The winners will get a chance to put their plan into action. That's right, if you win, you get to be Governor. The best entry for each ocean will grant the entrant the power over a whole island.

Other prizes as appropiate.

Rules for the prizes:

1. You must have a free slot for a pirate. You will create a character who will be entered into Death's Gate (Hades' crew). This character will have a white name. If needed, we can move a character from your account to make space.

2. This character will be made governor of the island

3. This character will be used to carry out the plan.

4. The player must remain in-character.

5. The player must do his or her best to stick to the plan proposed.

6. The player must stay active with the governor character.

7. Within reason, Hades is able to provide prizes for events and contests planned and run by the Governor.

How long is the plan suppossed to be? 1 month? 6 months? A year?

EDIT: Which Island? The post never specifies if the contest is for one or for all 3.

EDIT 2: Who are the judges?

What about us Sagers?

It's a bit early for Sage.

Will the Island be blockadable once the new Governor is installed?

Not initially. At some point the islands may be opened, however.

If the plan involves furniture or giving away billions of poe, will they be provided by the OMs or do we have to get it ourselves?

We'll probably favor plans that don't require a lot of OM support, but that doesn't mean support will be lacking.

How long is the plan suppossed to be?

That isn't defined. Some plans may only cover a few months, some may be very long term. We're not going to limit you to one or the other.

Which Island? The post never specifies if the contest is for one or for all 3.

Who are the judges?

Hades and myself. We may bring in some additional judges.

I play on two oceans, so I can enter for both? If I win for Sakjewima in Vid can I govern Jorvik in Mid?

I think I'd prefer your governor alt to be dedicated to the governing. And you might want one that's thematically appropiate.

I play on two oceans, so I can enter for both? If I win for Sakjewima in Vid can I govern Jorvik in Mid?

You can enter for both. I don't think we'll be letting anyone win more than one governorship, but if your entries are so good that they're the best, we may let you choose which one.

You'll be seeing me in this post some other time!

Make sure you post your entries to the proper thread!

Also, as an added help, we've got the .xml file for sakejima available for people to peruse and play around with in the island editor. You can grab it from here.

You can find Nemo's original post with links to all the island design tools here.

No, you will not have to blockade it first to win, however this is an OceanMaster event, I believe, as Hades (Developer or OceanMaster?) took over the island, I will not reveal the truth as some already know. And it is real. Contest info can be found here at the top of the page. :)

Re: [Contest] Who Wants to be Hades' Governor?
Rule of thumb on familiar events (Used to be accurate, should still be close).

Anyone that can design and organize a large event that will appeal to a large group of the ocean can ask the OM's by PM/Petition if it can be made a familiar event. Normally they will require that you've done a trial run to show that the kinks have been worked out, and will require that you've run other large events so that you have experience doing it.

About one such event per month per ocean is the highest rate that such events can be held.

That's certainly possible, but any event would have to be up to the standards of other familiar events in order to qualify a familiar prize. By all means, I'd love to see someone come up with something to knock my socks off.

It's looking good so far. I don't think there'd be a problem with people commenting on entries. Think we should add a commentary thread?

Is there a required or "suggested" length of our plan? Should i plan out regular events that would continue for months, or a series of events leading to an ending? Or are both acceptable?

Make them cover as much ground as you like. While I can't guarantee that you'll be able to put the entirety of a plan that runs for months and months into effect, that won't nix a plan from the get-go. If you've got a plan that can be run and implemented entirely in three days, cool. If it takes eight months, also cool. Just make sure it's a good plan.

Also I'm guessing Sakejimma's taxes are at 0% right now?

That's correct. Jorvik also has 0%.

I've set up a commentary thread here. Use that if you want to talk about the entries. While I can't say we'll be swayed by the public opinion, we may take it into consideration for the judging.

Also, I've noticed some of the entries have been split between parts 1 and 2 or somesuch. Please don't do this. If you want to add to your entry, go and edit the original post. To make things easier for the judging, I may ask an OM to go and splice together posts, but that's not really what they're there for, so if anyone who has split them could pop them together, that'd be excellent.

Yes, I've noted that, also. It may make it harder for the judges to see Part 1 of 2 , then they have to go through the entries to find Part 2, so I also agree to you, Minthe, to not do this. :)

O'Reilly- midnight

O'Reilly Island, a far side outpost where many pirates like to forage. sadly no islands around it can restock you or anything so you have to stock up huge for a trip like that. iI i want to run it so it can be a popular rest stop for ships out of rum or shot. it might also bring many ships to that archapelago. It has a natrual defence agest blockades because you can only get to it through two islands of uninhabitence. I would use my island as a rest stop of some form but hopfuly make it into a highly populated island. i would use it to help piates really nothing more, just to help my fellow pirates.

You will almost certainly only get the infrastructure buildings.

So, you can put news up in places, decorate things, etc.

You'll get anything a new governor would get. That should be most buildings on either Sakejima, but won't cover any shoppes on Jorvik.

You may consider access to these buildings, and the news locations within, as available resources.

I dont think the reward is meant to be abused though... (as in using shoppes to trade profit to your main account) To me it's more of a chance to roleplay, have some fun crashing blockades solo in a war frig, and think up ideas for events ;)

I'm sure ye can do governor types of things, some just prefer to preserve the island for the next ownership rather than turning it into a cnossos or something similar. To me, that's what island responsibility is, being prepared for growth.

Here.

Also, regarding the shoppes, well, you can place them, but you've got to put that in your plan. If your plan is to build a bunch of shoppes and pocket the profits, I'll be honest and say you're not likely to become governor.

There are a number of fun, innovative plans up already. I'm impressed and happy with the response.

Re: [Contest] Who Wants to be Hades' Governor?

A new furnishing shop has been placed on Jorvik. Can we expect anymore construction prior to this event ending? The building of two furnishing shops on this island was central to my Governor's plan and so this new construction has scuppered my entry. (Three shops of that type on poor overbuilt Jorvik is one too many).

I would like to know how it was determined that Napam got ownership of that construction site. And then by my reasoning he will then own the shop as well....

My understanding is that he bought another shop, and traded it for the construction site.

Sorta changes people's approach to the contest, though...like KMF, here. ewwww...

Why wasn't anyone who owned a shop on the island told this then? I might have traded my Apothacary for a Furnishing shop.

I don't know. Personally, I don't blame Napalm for asking or getting it done. Hades, on the other hand, shouldn't have done this while the contest was pending, and most probably not at all without public disclosure of the opportunity to others.

If there are any other commitments to provide/swap/dust whatever buildings and whatnot that have been made (on either ocean) that the prospective governors will have to factor into their plans for the island, those should have been disclosed as soon as possible for the contestants to factor in; they absolutely should be disclosed ASAP (and the prospective candidates for affected islands, if any, possibly given more time to revise their proposals to boot). Even if there are no other pending deals, Hades should at least disclose that fact.

<sigh>.

You save the file (it will end in .xml extension) on the disk somewhere, probably under "My Documents" or "~". You name it something like "Island.xml" if it isn't already named that.

Then, you start up the scene editor, and open that file.

Ack! It seems what happened was an Oceanmaster didn't know about the contest going on and just granted what seemed to be a reasonable player request. So my fault, really, for not properly informing them.

I'm really sorry this happened. It's not really possible to turn back the clock on the shoppe switch, but I can promise nothing else will happen until after the new Governor is chosen.

So can I change a shop on Alpha for a Furnishing Shop then? How about the same for Epsilion?

We have changed Jorvik back to its original configuration. As mentioned previously there was a bit of a miscommunication which led to the change. Apologies to Napalm for the misunderstanding as well as everyone whose entry this would have affected. As I told Napalm, we will try to open this option in some form to everyone on the island after this contest if it still makes sense to do so. If you have further questions please either start a new thread or send me an e-mail or petition.

Re: [Contest] Who Wants to be Hades' Governor?
Plan Title: The Eligean Fields Of Glory
Purposed by: Misarris of the cobalt Ocean

Hades being the Greek God of the underworld has decided to come above the earth’s core and enter into the world of Puzzle Pirates making Sakejima his new summer home. Remembering that he also must please his wife PERSEPHONE.

PERSEPHONE loves nature and things of beauty so my first plan as govern on the island would be to create a wonderful garden that the two could bask in their love for each as they vacation. Also this could become a nice place that weddings and events could take place at for a fee.
She also loves the sea so with the blessing of Poseidon, the God of the Sea, I would create and build a Vineyard overlooking the waves and cliffs of the island for the lovers. This wonderful home could also be used to host the events of the island.

On the more economic side, Hades, being the God of death, would have to have something to keep his craving down. So that pirate’s visiting his island don’t start dropping off this world and fading into the next. So I would create many Sword Fighting Tourneys and Brawls to show honor and sacrifice to the great god. Plus a nice Iron stall to meet the new demand for swords. Also once monsters are allowed into the game we could create his three-headed dog to continue guarding the entrance to his underworld kingdom. Starting a quest that worthy pirates could battle and risk their life’s for some great reward and honor thus bring more glory to the god and creating a higher rate of visitors to the island.

Going back to PERSEPHONE, since she is a beautiful woman. She would have to have a special weavery and tailors stall. In this stall maybe there could be a new color of fabric or a new dress that cannot be bought anywhere else. This would in turn create a nice source of revenue for the island as well.

I have also noticed that the island is in great need of nicer homes. As governor I would like to destroy the monopoly on Kirlin and allow cottages to also find their way to the soon to be beautiful island. Also as the island grows and more people begin to make it their home I would further advance the island to include town houses and vineyards.

As Governor I would also like to make this island feel a bit more at home by changing all shops names to something out of Greek mythology or to the underworld and different Myths Hades can be found in. Some examples might be

WeaveriesàThe Fate’s Thread
Tailors à Persephone’s Best Dressed
Distilleriesà Ambrose and more
Houses àThe Olympian look
Real Estate àEligean Fields a place of Paradise

The last part of my plan would have to be discussed with Hades nephew Aries, but I purpose that they would form a pact and not allow war to occur on this island but create a special secret blockade fleet to be used to increase Hades hold over his new domain of Puzzle Pirates. (that could also possibly leased out to other pirates that paid well)

My Plan: By Manokiller of Colbit Ocean
Plan Title: The Grand Plan
Date of being made: October 20, of 2005 at 6:55 PM EST Finished at 8:30 PM EST

My plan is to renovate the island into a Paradise for Hades And his wife, and any else who plans to inhabit the island or to Vacation there. I have studied and lived on Sakejima and thought where and how to place buildings and gardens for anyone to enjoy. My plan will need a little help for the OMs but only for Consultation and money problems other then that I would be mostly independent

This plan is very Feasible yet fun to do. I will try to build enough stuff to support those living on the island but still is very economic for those who come and live there or are just there on vaction. I will also do whatever I can in my power to make the game more fun for those who are having trouble playing the game. I will also as governor try and build Hades and for all those who play the game a very rare garden near the seaside so the players know that we care for them and want them to have as much fun as they can! Also In the garden we will place a stone that says "This garden was Dedicated and proudly given to Hades and his wife Persephone." I also think we should have something such as a piece of furniture or a piece of clothing that would be special that you only could get there. (But this idea is a little off the feasible thing) If I'm given the spot of governor ill try with all my power to do for the player and the OMs ill do what ever I can to make them feel like Sakejima is a home away from home. I will also hold 1-2 special contests a week so the players can look forward to something to entertain them but still is challenging. I will also hold a greenie and new players contests to show how to and to have fun with ppl who are about the same skill level.I will also play a new type of drinking game who ever drinks there way to winning wins!

Taxes is one problem with some ppl they ether hate it or "love" it so I propose to have a light taxation but a big enough to help the economy from crashing in to the ground. I also say that we should have a kind of loaning system like in Ice where lionizer loans out money to ppl and writing it down on a spread sheet or in the news box to have that would be nice but not to big of a luxury.

When I walk around Sakejima I see many things such as the need for more different kinds of homes, which some are only located on Kirin. A more stable economy that I believe that we should have a trading fleet which would also allow us to trade with our near by islands so none of us runs out of what we need. As dragons nest shows us we need a more diverse network of crews that work out of our port so that we also get the economy boost of crews buying supplies and the crews taking time off on the island. Also ill put myself behind all such as my plalce it will sit empty of my stuff so i can spend my money and time on other things then myself. If I'm given governor ill try to all my power to make this plan a reality and to also help this island out of the dark of the and bring into the light of the "modern" pirate island.

Also i will have (if he wants to) wherryd's help me also accomplish this dream!

Re: [Contest] Who Wants to be Hades' Governor?
I be Shalimar within the Cobalt Ocean. Sakejima Isle be my home. I be a crewmember of the Inner Strength Crew, loyal pirate of the Great Captain Mattimeome.

What would I do if I were tae be govener of Sakejima, eh, lad? Well, first I would ensure I became governer. This would be nae easy. But it'd be fun. I'd start by ensurin' whoever was holdin' the isle knew who I be. Womanly charms and the right words can be quite beguilin'. Then I would ensure those not loyal to the lord o' the lands had their ships scuttled and their business suddenly had problems. Barrin' that, I would ensure the ones loyal had no problem makin' poe and the disloyal had problems with blockades an' embargoes. Once I was sittin' on the throne, I would make 'em all pay a fee, not to me, but to the isle's owner, skimmin' a bit fer me own use, fer livin' there and the free shacks? Aye, there'd still be free shacks... but they'd have to swear loyalty to Haes fer it. Loyalty, as yer seein' is the main key. Then ye do what is best, make the isle profitable. The more poe comin' in means more spent and more that can go to creatin' a bigger Naval fleet. Bigger fleet equals bigger advantage against smaller, less populated, and sometimes more populated, isles. Harder fer us to be defeated. And fer those who tried to stop us? Well... me as Governer, and bein' a very intelligent lass with a sharp blade. I think they'd get the point.

As fer runnin' the isle. As I said earlier, big Navy. I'd make sure the price systems were altered sae everyone had a fair shake at things. Cloth, Rum, etc. Though Poe ain't growin' on trees, ye got to earn it. The taxes would help run an' pay fer the Navy as well as a few other things like a bigger dock so more shipwrites could be there and spreadin' the land available fer houses a bit. Though jobs would be offered where they could work right fer the isle itself not just at private owned places so they could earn poe, especially the new lads an' lasses who just got their sea legs.

Re: [Contest] Who Wants to be Hades' Governor?
First of all, if I was to become governor of Hades, I would make sure everyone that comes to Hades is equally satisfied (agrees with the laws that will be set aside for Hades citizens) with my decisions. The laws are as followed: No spamming on other’s properties unless permitted to. If wanting to make a statement or request ask your captain or ask or senior officer to send their statements or request to me if concerning the island so that I may let the citizens of Hades vote on their opinions. Last, no blockades on THIS Island. Who am I? I am Shadia a.k.a Shay who knows that she is strong, sophisticated, intelligent, and witty enough to become governor of Hades. I am a fleet officer in my crew “Pirates of the Forbidden” ready to become senior officer, I am a roomy with two others and I am planning to move to a house in Harmattan Island soon. I always wanted to become a governor so bad that I am trying to save my Poe to earn enough to try and buy an island (if possible).

I will give 500 Poe a week to the one I see who is helping the new users. When a request is brought up at my attention I will give the citizens (like the laws) the opportunity to vote. If someone is to have a problem they will inform me about it and will get the attention needed. Do not come up to me and ask for something because I will not give it to you unless you prove yourself to be needy. There will also be a secretary for the news or issues (statements, concerns, request, and questions) for when I am unable to get on…to deliver the answers or statements back to that person. I will save ship supplies and food for emergencies (for the ships that are connected to island). Debs will cost 1k-1.1k and tax will be 20 percent of the earnings of the shop owner or owner of home lots every 2 weeks so that they may save what they can for spare. There will be free shacks for those who can’t pay or is saving to buy a lot or bigger house. There will be a contest, which will be random, for the person that has the best looking house—interior design/inside of the house, the winner will get 2k from me and by me personally. And to add on… there will be a party at the palace randomly to invite people to apply as a citizen for Hades. I want the people of Hades to have fun and make themselves welcomed because when their happy…I’m happy! ? =: P!!! Thank You For Your Time Reading This

[Contest] Who Wants to be Hades' Governor?
As Governer I would lower taxes to 3% opening week. I will raise it to 5% it wont go any higher then that. It will open more shops and expand the island. I will use the extra space on the island for ship yards so the customer has more then 1 space to buy ships. The prices will not be overboard and will be somewhat lower then all other shipyards. There will be another furnishers shop. It will make more options for buying furniture open. I will open up a different kind of housing other then shacks more like Cottages, the pirates will get more housing space out of this. I would like to open another tailor shop with low prices for clothes aswell. I will not accept spamming and bad language. As for the island I will not make it look trashy. I will try my best to govern the island, and be successful at that.

More decoration placed around the island so people can explore the island to see what wonders have been put where ie. suit of amour at the outside of the inn or a romantic picinic spot of the pirate in love hiden away from the busy life of a pirate.

new range of houses
once new housing has finished construction
for best home or wackest colour design judging to be decided by a panel of three judes (because it is hades hoilday home you will never know when he might visit).

Have big tourine that is avaliable for local people, only then the top 40 from tournie are invited to palace for a private tournie with big prizes.

start a pirate run
pirates have to sail from a start point and get goods and then sail to the island. the Winner is the fastest in case of a tie the one with the most goods left gets the free sloop (or whatever prize is on offer) mind you, if you really want the prize you could always organize other officers from your crew to attack your competitors ...you are a pirate after all.

Try to have a greeter at the inn at all times ( poeple love to talk to them).

Weddings
once a month a radom local couple who wish to get married will be treated to to a humdinger wedding party with clothes for the bridal couple at the palace with tournies and some random furniture to help the blissful couple settle in to a home.

For the first month all stalls get some exclusive prizes that will be given away randomly to customers, for example Shipbuilding stall 2 sloops have a figure head in the form of our lord Hades or Skull mugs that have a patch over one eye.

A maze race
Under the palace where the minator live if u can beat him in the race u get the prize but be aware there might be a skellie around the corner

A monthly amputation party, come along and u might lose a limb

Some of the ideas I have listed above are just for fun and to create an island that would be fun to explore and live the pirate lifestyle , others are to raise revenue to help fund more exciting and hair raising ideas.

long live our lord
and may he visit often.

Re: [Contest] Who Wants to be Hades' Governor?
Lashed's Master Plan for Sakijima, Viridian Ocean. (2 free slots on this account)
Sakijima trembles and shakes and from there arises a volcano spewing lava (less than you'd expect). Once cooled this new mountain is hollowed out creating a cave/fortress reminiscent of the film Goonies; this will become the ruling home for Hades and the new core village known as Sakejima Center. Current shops and business will continue to exist but find themselves on the outside of the island fortress/mountain and not as easily accessible. The fortress will be a world of it own with a port entrance (replacing current one) and the shoppes primarily owned by Hades and myself. This process may take 2 to 9 months.

I, Lashed (or his alt), as governor will immediately reduce taxes by 1/3 thus allowing the shopkeepers and citizens of Sakijima to be able to afford lavish sacrificial gifts of fine clothing, potions, housing, etc. to please our Hedonic ruler. Shops filled from the sacrificial donations. This process may take 1 to 3 months.

Sakejima Center Shoppes
Dogma Temple -
Palace, Gift Donation Annex & Hall of Product Placement. Yes, Hades, myself and YHHP shouldn't be above such financial profiteering, we are pirates
Tailor Shop - Nether World's Nether Wear
Devil Brewery - Distillery
Crossed Skulls - Iron Mongers
Skellie-T Inn - for off duty skellies. Flesh visitor are tolerated at there. But annoy skellies or challenge them too often to SF you might lose your sword, booty or some of your stats. Removing your labor badge & taking your jobs is also one of their favorite tricks. Greenies not allowed.

Fallen Angels - Rarely given honor; bestowed on those privileged few whose donations and servitude have impressed Hades and myself. Horns may be bestowed on some for consistent long term service but will be invisible under a bandana or hat.

Pit of Despair - Annoying visitors might be forced into the Pit of Despair, a complex puzzle that they have to conquered before continuing in YHHPs. Repeated offenders get harder puzzles & those trying intentionally to be Pitted will be lost for 24 hours 1st offence, 48 hrs the 2nd , etc.

Housing -
Dante's Inferno - Upscale. Fallen Angels get Pit of Despair portal with purchase; just plank.
Brimstone Brownstones - Moderate
Lost Soul?s Y.P.C.A. - (Young Pirate's Carpentry Association) - Coffin shaped shacks.

Death?s Gate - (Hades Crew)
Flag - A second crew in Death?s Gateway Flag will be Death March and be assembled from alts of Crews and Flags throughout the Viridian Ocean. Only highest ranking and finest will be extended this offer; those who decline it ... are planked to the Pit of Despair. Anyone asking for advancement ... Pit of Despair
Death Warmed Over third crew, tournaments will determine members which MUST be full time regular players. Prizes : Positions on this crew ... Runner-ups, Pit of Despair

Long may our master Hades rule the netherworld and Sakejima

My pirate name is Jessup, part time Captain of an Eminent crew, and Lord of a Celebrated flag. I play on the Colbalt Ocean, and hope to be Governor of Sakejima Island.

Sakejima Island, a beautiful island in the ocean of Colbalt. Beautiful features include a lagoon. Sakejima has an inn, shacks, all sorts of shops, and more. Hades, ruler of the Underworld, has taken control of this island. My plan for Sakejima is as follows:

1. Around the shacks, there is an area with dirt. A small neightborhood shall be built here, feauturing more types of houses.
2. Every weekend, at Sakejima's fine palace, a party shall be held. Fine prizes shall be given out, in small tournaments. Everybody is invited, but citizens will somehow tend to get better prizes. *cough* become a citizen *cough*
3. Every MONTH, a contest with a familiar will be held inn the inn.
4. SAKEJIMA WILL ROCK YOU! ;)

Re: [Contest] Who Wants to be Hades' Governor?

Hello, my name is Ghettolove and i am running for governor of hades. If i am governor of Hades, i will sure everyone is treated as a related, from new comers to other islands. i want to help and understand the people more especially with their problems. Party at my place from Monday til Friday. The shops will be cheaper and the faces more friendlier. But there's only one catch to this, in order to become citizen you will have to follow these rules:

vote when island needs it.
respect others.
help out the island when needed(blockades)
and have fun.

When the island needs help, you will have to help. And with my own money, i will have sweepstakes, where you could win up to 5,000 or so poe. just remember:

When you smile, we smile!

Give them a week, if nothing is heard then post again. It may not take that long, but let's not seem impatient. A good governor wouldn't be impatient. Remember, they have three oceans to cover in this and surely they are wanting to come to a consensus about the winners so that takes time.

In AP Physics, in high school, we actually looked at that. The conclusion was that you could not continually keep the pot's state under observation -- there were gaps between the photons, and during those gaps the state could change.

(How's that for a derail?)

You are seriously getting on my nerves.

If you would prefer that the judges skim through all entries and judge half-assed, then surely they could post results within meer moments of the deadline. But the people who run this contest will need to go over each entry multiple times before coming to a conclusion. Additionally, this is not ALL they are doing with their time - and i would never expect it to be.

You are most certainly NOT waiting patiently. Stop posting before i hurt you.

The only reason ye got that response mate is because ye repeatedly posted exactly the same material.. which was contradicting itself anyway. And that was hardly flaming..

Re: [Contest] Who Wants to be Hades' Governor?
Well lets understand why the Ringers are taking their time.

1. In game Halloween stuff has consumed much of their time of late. So I am quite sure they haven't really gotten into the reading and judging just yet.

2. I am sure the Ringers/OMs have families and for many Halloween weekend is very busy.

3. For Viridian and Cobalt, this marks the FIRST Ringer Islands to be controlled by a player. This is a very big deal and they are going to careful review the plans so as to not booch the island.

4. For Midnight, Jorvik, is to say the least, a very controversial island. With Cnoss completely booched and Jorvik heading that way they again will be very careful.

5. Many of us entered under ALTs and the Ringers have to do their homework on WHO submitted each entry. Sure a plan might be good, but do you really want to give an island to someone that is close to being banned.

6. The Halloween patch has to be undone. Lets face it, NO patch to software is ever easy. I am quite sure significant time is currently being spent to get the game back to "normal" Also lets remember no patch is ever seemless. Everything may seem to go smoothly, but lets all consider the duck in the pond example. Looks nice and calm on top, but furiously kicking below the surface to keep things going.

7. Add in the number of judges, coordination meetings, business overhead, disagreements etc etc and well, I wouldn't expect to find out anything until the middle of November.

Lets all take a deep breath.....

EDIT: And for those that haven't figured it out... the Ringers want these "Island Events" to carry them through the holiday season. If they allow us to start too soon, the events will end before the holidays.

I am simply gobsmacked.

Please, please, please keep your shameless counts in Shore Leave. I've been checking this thread now and again, to see a new post; I check it, then hit my computer.

The conversation that's happening is fair enough.. but "lol"? Come on?

This, and the rest of the incoherant mould you're slobbering on the forums is what I was coughing at.

This kind of converstaion is better held on IRC or something. At least PM each other?

Through all the dregs of poor grammar and spelling that you insist on flinging into everyone of your posts, there isn't really anything worthwhile being said.

It's just better for the cleaners if you stay in shore leave, talking about nonsense in a non-sensical way is useless.

When it happens mate, ye'll know.

They'll PM whoever's won, and most likely say something to them in game if they can catch a hold of them.

They'll post the winners on the boards, so hether you win or not, you'll be told. Like the rest of us, ye just have to wait.

As is the case with every contest I can think of, when judging is complete, I am sure Minthe will post the winners to this thread. Please keep the noise level down until then, as I do not want to either lock the thread or delete posts.

If you wish to discuss the entries, there is a thread for that. If you wish to discuss the nature of the contest, this is the thread to post in. In neither case should you be posting repetitive messages that annoy the other readers.

I do believe it is time for this forum to get its own rules announcement post.

No-one will be able to give you a definate date, mate. Minthe's doing her day-to-day job, and trying to judge this contest; there's no point us asking her to waste her time posting in here to let us know when she might be done.

I'd say give her another fortnight, at least. Ye can't say fairer than that. Point is, none of us actually know for sure; so we're all in the same boat.

It's time to just relax; why not read a book between now and then?

Yes; that's exactly how long it will take. It will take you the time it takes to read a novel. Starting... now.

Re: [Contest] Who Wants to be Hades' Governor?
It's tough judging. You came up with some great plans. There were a few flights of fancy, but overall the creativity and energy dedicated to this impressed the heck out of me. I just hope the execution is as impressive as the planning was. We'll have to see.

There were a number of strong plans for each island. I wish we could have awarded a few more. However, there's only one governor per island, and that's what we'll award.

Jorvik Island

There's a lot of tumultous history for Jorvik. It's an old island, with a lot of development, and probably the most difficult of the three to find a balanced, yet fun plan.

Ultimately, Brontes managed a deceptively simple yet elegant way to breathe some new life into this charred husk of rock.

For honorable mentions, both Kmf and Ariadne Piggy came up with good strong plans which were close to winning. Buliwif came up with some great social ideas that I'd like to see in action. Squid came up with what I think was my favorite plan in the whole contest. It was poetic, but not really what we were looking for.

Sakejima Island - Cobalt Ocean

Many of the top designers here planned for some very bold changes. I think the character reflects the relative age of the Ocean, compared to Midnight.

In the end, for a combination of strong thematic elements, fun event tie-ins, and a really impressive delivery, Avernus gets to become the new governor. Careful, everyone, it looks like he's prepping for war.

There's some honorable mentions here, too. Many of the strong Cobalt plans were similar, with the biggest drawback being either overbuilding on the island, or lack of details in a few areas. Even so, props to Beelzeglub, Flibber, and Proserpine. Tanitha did well, despite planning on getting rid of our lord and master. Jumpinjak and Lollonais both came up with plans that read like a piece of government legislation, which left me impressed.

Sakejima Island - Viridian Ocean

In some ways, these were the most creative plans. The very nature of Viridian is different from Cobalt and Midnight, and took some alternative thinking.

Charun gets the nod for a plan that's complete, fun, and amusing to read.

In the honorable mentions, Anansi had a plan that's just a smidge behind Charun's. It's good and solid, and I'd like to see the bounty idea in action. Hilden and Amoreth also had good plans. Johnnyrico and Scupdoggydog made me giggle with their humor.

There you have it. We'll need to get the governors set up on their alts, which may take a few days. We'll need a time when we're both online to get you into your respective crews. This may take a bit of coordination, so go ahead and PM me if you're one of the three winners, and we'll get that figured out.

All honorable mentions will get a consolation prize of a black and maroon ribbon, to reflect the official colors of Hades. Submit a petition, and an Oceanmaster will get that to you.

Congratulations, everyone, and thanks for the awesome response.

The evil is here...nothing can contain it now. Prepare people of Cobalt Ocean, Prepare to send Nemo and his goodie goodies to the depths of Davy... it begins today. Let the games begin.

Stay tuned for an evil posting detailing the first few events. We need to coordinate with Hades before the infection can take over the island.

The base plan is here , but it will need to be adjusted to meet the demands of our lord Hades. (First to note is that we will be collecting Maroon Paint and not red....I am sure there are others)

Avernus
Ruler of Sakejima
Future destroyer of Nemo and his pitiful followers

Re: [Contest] Who Wants to be Hades' Governor?
First, congratulations to the winners. Although, I didn't win the governorship on Cobalt, I did get honorable mention so that's satisfying as well.

My only fear with Avernus' plan is now I will have to move my stalls from Sakejima. I cannot afford to pay 30% taxes on 7 stalls, four of which are high end stalls. I really don't believe people will willingly give up their own crews to join something that is a passing fancy. Some may but not that many. As for citizenship to Sakejima, I have no idea how you can determine who is a citizen there and who isn't. There are already over 1000 citizens so do these numbers count for your tax decrease? Higher taxes will make people LEAVE Sakejima, not stay. This is a horrible plan for the economy of Sakejima. Sure, somethings sound fun for some people, but its my honest opinion the economy of Sakejima will be further fractured. Prices are already high to get merchant deliveries there so prices tend to go higher anyway, let alone now to increase taxes which gets pushed off to the person who purchases on the island.

The rest of his plan sounds like fun, but I now fear for Sakejima. Perhaps this was Hades' plan. Who knows?

Aye, I agree Synful, and I am worried Sakejima will stay a forgoten island in the corner of the ocean.

But anyways congraulations Avernus. I'm dissapointed, but oh well. At least I got honarable mention :P (Lollainios was my entry). I feel honored to have impressed Minthe. lol

Honestly, raising taxes?
With the substantial drop in people on sake, to raise taxes will further decrease this isle to the population of less than an outpost, except for the green spawn.

Increase taxes will only kiss my bootay out of sake, and as one of the last few, oh well, would rather give my taxes to someone who knows how to manage!

Re: [Contest] Who Wants to be Hades' Governor?
Hmm...

Jorvik: Build a shoppe, keep taxes low. (Looterati).
Honerable mentions: Build 2 shops, keep taxes low (Looterati), build two shops, keep taxes low, non-Looterati.

In fairness, favorite plan was "raise taxes, destroy island".

Cobalt: Build one of every shop, auction off the inn, taxes relatively low (5-10%).
Honerable mentions:

Taxes:
6% for 6 days a week for 6 weeks.
The 7th day shall be henceforth called "The day of Avarice" with taxes of 66%

I thought this would disqualify the person right away for not understanding taxes. ** If your tax date was on the 66% day, you can easily change this for a stall (change the grade), but cannot change it at all if you are a shop. **. But it's still one of every shop, low taxes.
Shops, low taxes. Shops, unspecified taxes.

** AAACK. <grumble grumble> crappy I.E. <grumble grumble> ate my post.

Alright. All the plans that won, or were honerable mention, ALL involve shops (at least 4; usually one of each; at least one allowed for more), almost all involved low taxes (either zero, 5-10%, or one that starts at zero and goes up 1% per week.)

I'm unhappy that I didn't make honerable mention, nor humorous mention. I'm upset at what appears to be a "pro shop, low tax" approach to ringer islands.

** As long as ringer islands are around 5% tax, player islands cannot have high taxes.
As long as ringer islands are creating new shops, and handing them out, why shouldn't player islands create new shops and hand them out?

Is the end of every island to be fully paved at zero percent, with shopkeepers complaining that labor is spread too thinly, and laborers complaining about needing to have more than 3 jobs to make sure that all their labor gets used? With the costs of running a shop so low that people don't realize that they are losing money?

Raising taxes is the healthiest thing for the ocean economies.
Yet ... was my plan of 33% on the "keep them alive" sakejimma's too much? Was the 100% on "too many shops in midnight" out of balance?

Do we need to officially reduce the high end of the tax slider?

Oh, btw: Overnight snipped by everyone :-).

Responding to the snippers: No, he is NOT saying 30% taxes. Read that proposal again. There are so many ways to lower taxes that I will be suprised if it is above 10% beyond the second week, and I expect it to be 5% most of the time.

In his plan, it says taxes will begin at 25%. He then says we have to join his crew to lower taxes and not just any alt, he wants the alts all to have broad stats in two puzzles. Then he says taxes will be lowered if 100 people make sakejima their home. I do not see anybody even wanting to remain at Sakejima let alone want to make it their home. Not many people are going to put their main characters in a part time crew. As for the other events, I am looking forward to them as I love events, but I'm just very concerned with the economy.

Also, one thing that bothers me as well. I'm not saying this is what he did, but this is what could have happened.

We were all told we had to lock our plans in by a certain date. Well, external webpages can be modified at anytime without anybody being the wiser. That is why the majority of us didn't make a webpage for their entries but posted them in this thread. Trust me, I could have made one with flash! Make it look real spiffy. But since we were locked into a deadline, the only real way of meeting that deadline was to post the plan in the thread. If the plan was laid out in the thread AND had the link to a webpage, that could possibly be a little different, but still, anybody can modify their webpages at any time without anyone being the wiser. I do not begrudge him for winning. He submitted his entry as we all did. I do, however, wonder about the judging.

Web page was last updated:
Monday, October 24, 2005 7:41 PM 22435 plan.htm

so if he is in the US, it's 10:41 at latest.
If UK, he passed the deadline.

Quite honestly, his plan was pretty much limited to participation, and honestly don't see many people doing it. There are 2 inns I think for sale now and no one wants it.

If anything, this plan will make Sakejima less attractive.

Agreed and agreed. I thought the purpose of the contest was to make the island more attractive and more merchant friendly. His plan also states to lower taxes ye have to give him things, and also become a citizen. No ones going to want to become a citizen with those high taxes. Like Synful said ye have to join his crew for him to lower taxes. Pssh! Thats absurd. Why not do whats best for the island. I also dont like how the judges picked the "prettiest" entry. Shouldn't the judging be based on whats right for the island. I thought the ringers didn't want to screw up this island. Ye can quote from eairlier in the thread people saying "The judging going to take long because the ringers DON'T want to screw these islands up" and other things like that.

Thats my speech for now.

Mine is also in its case since my dolly stays with me now.

Remember, I did not say Avernus cheated in any way and after speaking to him on the docks, I realized that the taxes won't remain high for very long, but he does have to get some sort of income into the island to be able to do the activities. His plan wasn't too far off the mark from most of us, just worded differently.

I put an alt in his crew, found one with two broads. I am looking forward to the events of the island. Oh and trading to the island will get more merchant deliveries flowing, so he's right on target there as well.

The only reason why I brought up the external webpage is because if future events allow for this, then they need not to have a deadline or make some other changes to events.

Now, lets all have some fun and if ye have a stall on Sakejima, by all means pay yer rent soon!

My favorite plan out of all of them was Avernus' not just cause it looked good but it filled the ocean with a good story to go by and I would enjoy it if I didn't like Viridian so much. Also If you didn't get a Honorable mention then don't complain. Different people have different taste and if you didn't get one then just accept that Minthe's taste wern't in your taste's!

yea i do i was just wondering how mines was that was all srry if i seemed to be push but thats all and if the winner of viridian could contact me on viridian as bejntam for a quick word i would really appreciate that

Send him a PM! Your plan was good I must say and I too wander why you didn't get a Honorable mention! Well if you donate anything to Charun, he says he will reward you!

Post entries to this thread.

I dont think that it was fair on other cobalters that avernus plan was put on a website. It alloweed him to edit even when others couldent.

As from the quote above which was from minthe it was reffering to the entery thread. Posting on a website and putting fancy graphics is a unfair advantage to him. Sure his plan had some good points but i think it was unfair to anyone who entered for cobalt and should of been void. Im sure there was better plans which were poste don the entery thread. Also i like to say congratz to virdian winner, that was a good plan. i didnt get to read midnight yet.
Im not a cobalter.

i personally think people should stop tarting as it will not change anything but instead they should just say that in future contests websites should not be allowed.

Ironic, the disclosure of personal information including alts is what led to the formal petition being submitted as that information was used to restrict/grief the players involved.

There have been OVER 100 violations of this within the forums.
Several have included my character/personal information.

Enforce these as well.

No OMs intervened there....curiously.

By posting in here, we gave our express permission. Quit pettifogulizing.

Just a question for you, not trying to be rude here either, but why do you still play this game if you do not enjoy it? Everytime I turn around, yer complaining about something about the game. If I was so miserable in a game, I wouldn't play it anymore.

I wasn't talking to you, silly boy. I was asking the Muse if she'd prefer I "take it outside," as I believe most of us prefer to keep the creativity with the creativity, and the tarting with the tarting.

Which isn't to say that my little spat with you won't get creative...

I wouldn't waste the time. If we're talking about creativity, poor chappie's trying to intimidate you with a phrase stolen from a) the president and b) a cheerleading movie. That's just wrong.

Haha, once again synful, you are off the mark...

I posted the true Identity of Avernus, and Bia edited it and put that statement..

my edits were response to her actions.

Re: [Contest] Who Wants to be Hades' Governor?
Dear gentle reader,

Please apply the word 'you' as needed, with salt to taste.

If you feel you've been wronged, it's beyond me why you'd do the same thing to another mate.

If you want to talk about whether or not the Terms of Service apply to the forums, and to what extent - take it to Parley.

If you want to insult each other, take it to PMs or better yet - save yer fire for the cannons.

If you feel you've honestly been wronged by an OMs actions, email support@threerings.net, as per here.

Please can we stop? It makes Baby Tamsin cry every time she sees a fantastic contest breed so many creative fun-to-view entries, only to meet its end with a bunch o' mud-filled tart slinging.

Since the competition is over and I believe the winners have started their own threads, I think this thread has reached its conclusion.
