Uni's Bilge Tutorial.

1) Start the puzzle with a good move *
2) Get combo's
3) Limit yer moves to get combo's
4) Clear the Crabs

5) When ye can't manage to do 1-4 well, stop the puzzle
and don't start it till after the next nav point.
(this resets the pump)
Step 5 if for those who make too many BAD moves, and yer pump is Booched.

*a note about step 1, those who want to get on the top
10 list need to pay attention to step 1, or ye canna get
an incredible the first league.(good means combo, or chain reaction)*

Info about combo's
(how many moves a combo will keep yer pump at the same spot)
Ye of course want todo these in LESS than this.

3x3 - worth 3 moves
3x4 - worth 4 moves
3x5 - worth 4 moves
3x3x3 - worth 7 moves (Bingo)
3x3x5 - worth 9 moves (Bingo)
3x3x3xA - worth 11 moves *aprox (Sea Donkey)
3x3x4xA - worth 12 moves *aprox (Sea Donkey)
3x3x5xA - worth 14 moves *aprox (Sea Donkey)

Bonuses
1 crab - worth 1-2 move
2 crabs - worth 2-3 moves
Crabs vary on water level of boat...the more water the more
the crabs are worth.

Neutral's
Blowfish
Squid

Penaltie's
Idleness
10 sec's = 1 move

Ok now on to the set up of Bingo's
(the prefered method for getting Incredibles)

Look for a row with 3 of a kind.
Then see if that same piece is vertically in 2 adjacent rows.
This be the building block of all combo's.
Once ye have this, ye can get Bingo's and Up.

Mind the bump.

Have any of these issues been tweaked since mid 2004? I thought there was some update to the scoring system at some point.

The point loss for making a move was increased for lower start levels. These numbers only apply for 7-star bilge now.

I'd also like to add that you Really Really want to play as slow as possible without stumbling on the 10 second penalty. Take your time with every move, unless you're in a really deep hole and need to get up. If things are going well don't move fast, even if you have good setups to do so.

Also, crabs are worth very very little if there's no bilge singly. Try to take out two+ at a time if possible. It seems to increase the payout a bit.

I believe that combos have been tweaked quite a bit. I'd say bingoes and on are worth twice as many moves than Uni says, while anything lower is worth half.
I'd say that taking 25+ moves and setting off a vegas should put you around where you started.

Hmm... I think I have a 7-color alt or two around. It's easy enough to determine what averages a sparkly by doing initial combos. maybe we should just recalculate the numbers instead of relying on Uni's from a year or two back.

I've mentioned before that one excellent way of counting scores would be to take screenshots before and after a move and then counting the number of pixels that the star meter rises, relatively between different combos. Because unlike all the other puzzles, the star level in bilge is fluid, and is not tied to obvious benchmarks, like filling holes or completing constellations.

Also, I get consistent incredibles all the time without doing any bingos at all. Just a 3x3 or 3x4 every 2 or 3 moves is sufficient to sustain incredibles indefinitely.

If 3x3 = (3+3)*2 = 12 points and 3x4 = (3+4)*2 = 14 points, and 3x3x3 = (9)*3 = 27 points, this would make sense, because uni's numbers would be slightly inflated for bingos vs. lower combos. And this way is a more obvious mathematical system, which any programmed game like this is going to favor.

Just looking at the text size, at the higher levels of bilge, there is a dramatic difference in score between a 3x3x3 and a 3x3x4 bingo, despite there being only one additional piece.
