Something in one of the swabbies threads, plus an article on game design, got me thinking...

we should be able to 'retire' pirates to become NPPs.

There'd have to be restrictions on it, of course, so people couldn't just go around grabbing up all the good names and retiring them. Say, a minimum amount of existence time (3 months? 6?), a 100k down-payment, and a certain number of player votes (in the 'a lot' range) in favor of that name being retired.

Then that pirate would be deleted, and a swabbie would be created that always wore whatever that pirate was wearing at the time of deletion and had the same name. You could charge an extra fee for adjective choice, or (hah!) let one of the OMs do it.

(See, the article I was reading was making the point that MMOs need to give players better 'outs' for their characters - that if you gave them a graceful and relevant way to leave, they'd be a) more likely to come back in the future, b) less likely to cause trouble on their way out, and c) a good inspiration to current and future players.)

Not that I'm saying that this should be done any time even vaguely soon, but I liked the idea.

Great idea, I think it adds a nice sense of history to the game.

Instead of the NPP's taking up names they could have an adjective added to the beggining like other swabbies though.

So if you retired an NPP called "charming bokodasu" or something would be created on your home island dressed in your regular clothing.

Its always sad when a player leaves, It would be nice to have sort of walking monuments to them walking about. It also acts as a nice way to spend all your wealth when you quit (rather than giving it all to some greenie or something.)

It would be nice if they had set script based on things they said when they we're "alive" too...

I love it! Although I think my NPP should be able to be a random swabbie. =)

I like this. It's cute. And I would love for a Sassafras to continue on without me someday. (assuming of course that I can manage to tear myself away!)

What's interesting about this is that we've already done it by hand. Prominent Alpha players' real names have crept into the NPP naming list. It could be interesting to do this with personalized quotes for a very high price.
