"Choose your own Island" Opening - starting May 5th

"Choose your own Island" Opening

When & Where:
- May 5th: Sage
- May 19th: Cobalt
- June 2nd: Hunter
- June 16th: Viridian
- June 30th: Opal

Unfortunately we really don't have enough islands to do this on Midnight so a different event will be posted later.

How will it work:
Each ocean has a list of "available" islands which may be opened, the first island on that list will be opened on the first date date listed by the ocean name. If that island is not claimed on that weekend, it will be closed and the next island on the list will be opened for the following weekend. This will continue until one island is opened or until all the islands have been attempted. If no islands are taken, then none will be opened for colonization.

Sage
1: Deadlight Dunes
2: Jack's Last Gift
3: Ambush Island
4: Scurvy Reef
5: Bowditch Island
6: Hinga Island (Large, Stork)

So to get to the larges you have to, as an ocean, pass up various others. That's evil. I like it.

I agree, I think it is brilliant. Uncolonizers Inc on Sage is going to be busy to get to that large. =P

It is human nature to be greedy... The only way anyone will get the large island is that at least once a non contesting flag will have to win... Sounds fun...

Re: "Choose your own Island" Opening - starting May 5th

Wow, if you want a large island, you're going to have to float your fleet around every week and win 4-5 consecutive sinking defenses all about the arch, or find a lot of help in doing that, or find a way to have people not drop on isles.

Sorry to state, Leif, this is really what large degrees of sinking is all about. =)

Re: "Choose your own Island" Opening - starting May 5th

Fascinating! I love it when you guys get creative :)

I think I get it, but I'm a little confused by "claimed" vs "opened," so let me confirm:

On Cobalt:
Yax Mutal will be blockadable on May 19th. If, say, I want to colonize Sapling, I need to show up at Yax Mutal and defend it against anyone who dropped a war chest, correct? And assuming the non-droppers win the blockade, Yax Mutal remains uncolonized, becomes unblockadable again, and on May 26th, Sapling will be blockadable.

Have I got it straight?

Re: "Choose your own Island" Opening - starting May 5th

I think what she meant was no one can drop a chest on it. That means the whole ocean needs to pass up an outpost in turn for another island the following weekend.

My question is this...say some greedy flag drops on Iocane on June 2nd...will the rest of the ocean have to wait another 2 months for another island to open?

It's not that hard on Sage, if you catch the patern

this' the actual map of the islands opening on sage.

Blockade at one island, move one island to north, blockade there, move one up, till you're right at top of the patern :D

Re: "Choose your own Island" Opening - starting May 5th

A greenie question: In order to prevent the new island to open, defenders, that is, those who did not drop a war chest, will have to win the sinking blockade against all the attackers, that is, those who dropped a war chest?

If that is the case, whow, an awesome and brilliant and evil scheme indeed this is to open an island.

I love it, love it, love it.

/me runs off to position ships and supplies to defend those early island openings ...

Re: "Choose your own Island" Opening - starting May 5th

Yes, but you still have to float the fleet, get in fresh supplies, pay jobbers, have your navvers and XO staff in place...all in the name of making sure no one wins each isle in turn. Oh, right. You also expose that fleet to sinking in every blockade your flag shows up for, and anticipate people dropping at potentially odd times for your group's defense efforts. *grin*

Re: "Choose your own Island" Opening - starting May 5th

A bunch of us were discussing this on Sage Parley. If someone drops before that large opens (On Sage at least) it is political suicide. So yes, they can be evil, but they would also be up against as Sho said 15 WF vs their 2 WB and a cutter. I could also see war decs flying. Going against people is hard enough, but going against the top 20 flags in the ocean when they all work together is just not so smart. Also, good luck getting jobbers ever again. =P

5 weeks of sinking fun though...someone please poke out my eye once and for all!

Re: "Choose your own Island" Opening - starting May 5th

/me disagrees categorically with beebes and considers it politicking to try to get Sho's advantage without spending on island-free defending. ;-) Though if it were me I would just arrange with the co-conspirators to take a round each and preserve fleet somewhat. Or send in kill teams to destroy the opponents' botes and just a small set team to cover points... or or or. The possibilities for fun are endless.

Brilliant plan, large degrees of sinking indeed.

Re: "Choose your own Island" Opening - starting May 5th

Question on the game mechanics.

When a party that didn't drop the chest wins a round, the round goes to defender. But what happens when there's no defender? If the attacker gets the point in that case, the only way to defend is by dropping with 2 other flags and win 2 rounds with one flag and another round with the other flag.

Has anyone attempted to defend an island so far?

PS: You win Artemis!

Uncolonizers Inc. did.

And when there is no defender, defender still gets the point. When the defender manages to get 3 points, island is left uncolonized...

Re: "Choose your own Island" Opening - starting May 5th

The phrasing that the round goes to the defender if a non-contender wins is a misnomer. What happens is that you must win three rounds to take an island from its current holder, so a round taken by a non-contender has the same effect as a round taken by the defender - to preserve the status quo.
