Hi, just got a new iMac running Mac OS 10.4.9 (Tiger). Confirmed Java version 5 is installed and set properly in preferences. Downloaded Puzzle Pirates OK, can start and log in. However, once at the island view I cannot go to any locations: on the island map, no locations are clickable. If I am on the dock, I see the yellow arrow that would let me board a ship or leave the dock area, but when I hover my mouse over the arrow it does not change state/color, and clicking the arrow does not take me to the new area etc. Anything else I can try to fix this? Thanks! |

Does a simple fix of re-installing fix this? ---------------------------------------- Hard and big guide to whack off Brigands How to make a pirate feel good |

Nope. Tried updating Java again, then deleting and re-installing puzzle pirates. Other suggestions welcome! |

Anyone out there running Mac OS X version 10.4.9 who is running the Puzzle Pirates client successfully? |

here is the logfile for debugging purposes. basically logged on, tried to click on some arrows, went to the map, tried to click locations, etc. 2007/03/27 23:25:44:592 ? yohoho: Opened debug log '/Users/macuser/Desktop/Puzzle Pirates.app/Contents/Resources/Java/./yohoho.log'. |

Another data point: the same problem happens if I launch Puzzle Pirates in a browser window instead of using the downloaded client. |

I'm running 10.4.9 and I've had no problems (once I upgraded from 512M of RAM). java -version on the terminal returns: java version "1.5.0_07" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_07-164) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_07-87, mixed mode, sharing) If you have just 512M, which is what most Macs come installed with, upgrade to 1G and you'll be good. ---------------------------------------- Melarma (Midnight) |

Not necessarily, I have 1GB and still lag out of blockade-carp. Watching in Activity Monitor YPP uses about 600MB of real and 1GB of virtual memory. On blockade-carp this rises slowly to 800MB+ Real and 1.5GB + virtual. At which point the game is so unresponsive I tend to force-quit, re-start and hope that the ship hasn't sunk. I sent a report to YPP bugs, but they just sent me to the forums (where as far as I can see this particular issue isn't mentioned) ---------------------------------------- Blyndpew/Albion Not even an authorised spokesman for Me Delft2010 Sign up Now! |

I'm glad that you brought up the Evil Carp Blockade bug that is killing my love for carp! Nobody else seems to be talking about this - is it Mac-specific? I am having the same problem (also on a Mac with 1GB), that seems to compound when I am carping at a high level in blockades with full sparkles. The system routinely stalls out on me and forces me to reboot after I've gone from full sparkle to black hammer. :( I'm also getting the "window blind" in the carp screen routinely moving around the screen where it covers my playing area and forces me to booch some of my pieces. Grrr, how I would love to show off my carp prowess in blockades! |

It seems to be, from a brief /fo survey. PC users report memory usage of 200MB to my 800MB, and nothing more than "routine" lag.
That isn't Mac specific, it was growled about by a PC-using crewmate at which point I said it didn't happen on the Mac. Then it did. It sat on the edge of a hole so I couldn't see the shape. I was relieved to get the MP by guesswork. ---------------------------------------- Blyndpew/Albion Not even an authorised spokesman for Me Delft2010 Sign up Now! |

Well, seeing that Crucial.com were doing 2GB kits for £79 I thought I would try throwing money at the problem. I checked eBay and it seems I can recoup most of that cost selling my 1GB kit :-) ---------------------------------------- Blyndpew/Albion Not even an authorised spokesman for Me Delft2010 Sign up Now! |

Thanks for the comments all. Sorry for the delay in replying - I have been away! In any case, just wanted to specify that what I'm experiencing is definitely not a lag or resource related problem (I've seen those on my older computer - one of the reasons I upgraded to a new computer, and did get the 1GB of RAM!). Nothing is bogging down, it is simply the fact that the yellow arrows, map locations, entrances to buildings, etc. never become "active" if I hover/click them. So, I've never bogged or slowed down - I can always walk around normally, etc. Just not actually go anywhere. sarahbert, I get the same as you: java version "1.5.0_07" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_07-164) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_07-87 , mixed mode, sharing) are you using an iMac, or a different sort of Mac. Most puzzling to me is that this is a totally new Mac, didn't install anything else besides the software updates and then Pirates! |

I have a 2-year-old G4 Powerbook and a new Intel Macbook, both 10.4.9, so neither is an iMac. YPP works on both. Maybe what you need is to trade yours in for a laptop! Can you log on to any other ocean besides Cobalt? The only other thing I can think of is maybe a DarwinPorts install of Java...but you shouldn't need to do that, really. BTW, the behavior you describe sounds similar to what I've seen when my client disconnected from the server but didn't know it yet. Do you get crew chat, /fo chat, etc., while you're experiencing this problem? ---------------------------------------- Melarma (Midnight) |

Good thing to check! I do get tells and chats ok so I seem to be online. I can even be challenged by another player. Just can't actually go anywhere! |

Since it is hard to explain these things sometimes, I made a small movie of the problem I'm experiencing: The Trouble with Pirates (about 3MB) |

I had a look at the video and...yeah. Wow. That doesn't happen for me. I did a bit of Googling, though... This page on the latest MacOSX Java update notes that certain timezones may have backwards compatibility issues. It's worth running the updater from Sun to make sure this isn't a date problem at some level. If it affects different timezones differently, that could explain why some folks see it and some don't. Besides that, the Apple Discussions site looks like a good place to post a question. Sorry I don't have more resources - hopefully one of these will fix it. ---------------------------------------- Melarma (Midnight) |

Thanks for the link to the Apple Discussions site. Looks like I'll have to try there since I've hit a dead end here! |

I meant to add that this happens with any pirate on any ocean, if that matters. |

This seems rather odd... OS X has always been problematic for transparency, but not being able to click on the arrows is very strange. There's nothing abnormal in that logfile that I can see, unfortunately, and I don't think I'd be able to locally reproduce the problem. Are you running in fullscreen or windowed? ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Lizthegrey at Apr 10, 2007 10:46:24 AM] |

Hi Liz, thanks for stopping by :) Windowed. Same issue if I try playing via the browser as well. I can try fullscreen later today. |

I tried fullscreen - no difference. |

Just to give an update: I did an Erase and Reinstall using the Mac OS X discs, so the computer started totally blank and fresh PuzzlePirates had the same error Ran Software Update to get the absolute latest version of Java PuzzlePirates had the same error. |

If it's a completely clean system, then we -should- be able to duplicate it locally. I can try locating a mac and trying to reproduce it, but if we've isolated that it's not a software problem, then I'd be inclined to blame variance in hardware as it's the only possibility left. |

It certainly seems that way, odd as it is. Here is the exact hardware I have: iMac 17inch 2.0GHz # 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo # 1GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x512 # 160GB Serial ATA drive # SuperDrive 8X (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) # Keyboard & Mighty Mouse + Mac OS X - U.S. English # ATI Radeon X1600 128MB SDRAM # 17-inch widescreen LCD # AirPort Extreme # Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR If you need any more specs you can grab them off the Apple website. Thanks! |

that is the most normal thing thaat happens i got a mac too if u play puzzle pirates u should be sure to force quit everything exept puzzle pirates and dont relaunch the finder cuz that makes it worse if nothing happens you have to let the computer rest cuz then it means it under heavy load.the go back relaunch the game and it should work. if it doesnt then lets face it yer computers broken you should replace the hard drive if its broken thats as far as i know of coms.when you relaunch i forgot to say yuou have to let it off for minimum 10-15 minutes to compresse the load if shorter time the computer may lead to total freezing in other words u can do notin u cant even turn the computer off if total freezing occurs you have to uplug it the hard way good luck. ---------------------------------------- Pirate Name: Kyu From: Isle of Kent Sage Ocean Ship: Sloop "Strange Marlin" |
