I'm out sailing today with myself and one of me SO's and 3 greens. Total of five people but since greens don't remove swabbies from the ship I also have two swabbies. Grand total of 7 people on my ship filling her up. I would much rather have 7 real people though then 5 real and 2 swabbies. My suggested change would be that swabbies leave the ship even for a green if the swabbie would fill up the ship. So on a sloop with 5 people in my situation I should have 1 swabbie not 2. On a cutter if you got 13 people and still had swabbies (that's alot of greens :)) the next green would kick a swabbie off ect. As it is now there is no way to fill up your ship with real people once you have a few greens on board (sloops anyway). ---------------------------------------- Kelyon Hawk of Fidelis Bellum |

The moment the ship is full, the job offer is automatically taken down. Then you fire the swabbies, which gives you an emptier ship - so you put the job offer up, and the swabbies come back abaord. atteSmythe, who took a while to realize this as well ----------------------------------------

I still want my separate "Hire Swabbies" and "Hire Jobbers" buttons. Beautiful for trading runs where someone random pops on your ship, apologises, and then runs off, kicking off one of your swabbies. Would also solve this problem as well (Hire swabbies, turn off job offer, kick off one swab, throw hire jobbers button on) ---------------------------------------- Lallaria [size=10]Retired |

Aye that would work as well. Matters not to me raelly how the fix works just so long as I can have a ship full of real people, also some way so I can allow crew mates to whisk to me ship because right now the swabbies disallow that. Perhaps just make it so that you can keep the job offer up even if the ship is full with swabbies but when ever anyone else comes aboard one of the swabbies leave. . . that would fix my problem as well. ---------------------------------------- Kelyon Hawk of Fidelis Bellum |

the proposal that i want is actually: If a person tries to come aboard and swabbies are aboard, the person replaces the swabbie, that way it doesnt matter |

I would like it if a swabbie could come aboard during sea battle, only up to the maximum amount, of course; but if someone disconnects or whatever that would help a lot. ---------------------------------------- Ravine Black Death, Midnight |

I agree with Lizzie. This is something that seems to make sense since Cleaver has stated that the relative strength of your ship (i.e. the color you appear to other ships) is already based upon the assumption that you are full on swabbies. So...if you lose a real person, or you forgot to hire swabbies in the first place, or a jobber bails on you, why shouldn?t you be able to get a new swabbie since it wouldn't affect your 'calculated' strength anyway? I'll throw my voice in for support of this idea. Often-times this is crippling to a fight, especially those that may come down to 1-1, and the person left on your team just doesn't have the room to win it out for you. Personally I'd like to see you get a swabbie for every player that leaves the boat on your during the fight, I've had times where we had one guys hop off before the actual swordfight, and then I lost someone to disconnection when we entered the puzzle. I'm not sure how you'd handle the disconnections / lost links during the puzzle, but a replacement for those who ditched ya before the sword fight would be a tremendous help. |

Not sure if it'd be easier to code, but alternatively the other ship could kick a brigand off instead of your ship gaining a swabbie. ---------------------------------------- BadGundo, Cap'n of the Sea Ogres Husband of Captain Starashes |

Maybe if you disconnect anytime during the sea battle phase, you're automatically kicked off the boat and a swabbie sent in to take your place; that way you cant reconnect to cause problems by having one too many. I guess people might complain if it was a quick disconnect, but who cares, because it would make it easier on the rest of the ship. ---------------------------------------- Ravine Black Death, Midnight |

Yay for good ideas. This'd help people with shoddy connections, or limited available time, feel much more comfortable about sailing with their mate(y)s. ---------------------------------------- Diamondblade, Cartographer, Crimson Tide. from Midnight. I must say I'm in favour of the idea of swabbies taking the place of someone if they loose the connection going into battle. It happened to us last night we had a crew of eight and were attacked by a (red) war brig with loads. Then during the sea battle two crew members lost their connections for a few seconds and we went into the sword fight two down. To add insult to injury one of our greenies logged off. We lost 2.5K plus about the same in goods. All credit to one of our jobbers (I forget who) who seemed to last forever against the last four brigs and got them down to one before she fell. In answer to the top question - I quite like swabbies on board, they don't bootch even if they never get above fine, but I would always prefer people. The work around is to ask two of your crew to leave until you max out with jobbers and then tell the two crew members to come aboard and the swabbies will leave. Regards Seasnake, Captain of the Flying Tigers, King of The Patrician's Flag AKA RedDog Finest Pilot in three world wars. Ask to join the Patrician's Flag or join one of our crews. You are either with us or against us and you don't want to be against us. Terry Pratchett fans are more welcome than most. [size=9]Subfamily Hydrophiinae (Seasnakes): There 50 or so species of seasnakes, they can swim hundreds, maybe thousands of milesand give birth to live young. They have no natural enemies and are amongst the most venomous snakes in the world. More venomous than even the King Cobra and a single King Cobra bite can kill an elephant in seconds. The only antivenom for seasnake bite is produced in Australia but the raw venom required for production is in short supply. Fortunatly the seasnake rarely bites humans. ---------------------------------------- Captain of the Flying Tigers, King of The Patrician's Flag Fortunatly the seasnake rarely bites humans. I'm bumping this thread, because a) I think there still needs to be a fix regarding what Jothmar is saying and b) I still really like my idea of a swabbie coming in to take the place of someone who has left in the middle of sea battle or has disconnected. ---------------------------------------- Ravine Black Death, Midnight |

I actually bugged this the other day, wasn't aware that there was a thread about it. If the ship is full but there are swabbies on board then the job offer should not be taken down, period. It doesn't make sense to. It should only be taken down when the ship is full of real players. Then when somebody else boards, the swabbie just leaves. Like atteSmythe said back at the beginning, its next to impossible to fire the swabbies and keep the job offer up because as soon as you post the offer the swabbie comes back, the ship becomes "full", and the offer is automatically taken down. Also, I, too, like the idea of swabbies replacing people that disconnect/leave in battle. I like the idea of having the swabbie replace a disconnected player at any time in the sea battle phase but the quick disconnect thing would cause more problems than it would solve, I think. A good compromise might be to have swabbies replace people that are planked in the battle nav phase rather than disconnected. That way it can be the captain's discretion as to whether the disconnected player is actually in the way or not (because sometimes it really isn't a problem). And regardless, a bot would still replace a real player no matter what if they were disconnected in the brawl phase. ---------------------------------------- The List: Where good suggestions go when they die.
