Cold Steel Event Pillage - Wednesday, Nov 29

Ahoy thar mates!

The folks of Cold Steel are setting up an event pillage for Wednesday, Novemeber 29th, starting at 5 PM pirate time (8 PM EST). Jobbing contacts are Fullbeard and Yoanne.

But Mr. Fullbeard, what is an event pillage, you ask? Excellent question!

First and foremost, it's a pillage, silly! We'll be terrorizing the seas in a War Brig (Frig, if we actually get that many people) with our fabulous guest navver, Springheel. Come along for plenty of brigand bashing and booty plundering.

Secondly, it's a chance to play a lot of goofy games. Games may include (but are not necessarily limited to):

Trivia Questions - Throughout the entire pillage, we'll be asking Y!PP based trivia questions. The first to answer each question wins 200 PoE.

50/50 Raffles - At the end of the pillage, we'll have a drawing for a 50/50 raffle winner. Tickets will cost 200 PoE each, or 6 for 1,000 PoE. There's no limit to the number of tickets you can buy. Tickets can be purchased at any time and you need not be on the vessel at the time of the drawing to win. The winner takes home half the total money. (The other half will be used to offset the cost of other prizes, and such.)

Let's Make a Deal - We'll be selecting random winners on the vessel at regular intervals throughout the pillage. That winner is entitled to 1,000 PoE or a draw at the "Bag of Mystery"! What's in the bag, you ask? All sorts of stuff. A lot of cheap goods - cheap furniture, clothing, whisking potions... But some real gems, too. Expensive furniture. Clothing. Shopping credits. Perhaps even a new ship!?! The winner can take their 1,000 PoE and go on, or they can pull a random item from the bag. It's up to them.

Ugliest Outfit - That's right, wear your worst! You have a lime/violet captain's jacket, you say? By gum, that might be a winner! Winner gets a fabulous prize.

We hereby reserve the right to add/remove/change any of these games between now and the actual pillage, but you get the idea. We're going to pillage and have fun doing it!

Come join us, mates - it's bound to be a grand time!

Anyone trying to win the ugliest outfit contest should be hoping that Pegnose doesn't show up. I swear he couldn't put a coordinated outfit together even if a familiar were on the line.

Re: Cold Steel Event Pillage - Wednesday, Nov 29

We'll be kicking this off in about an hour, mates!

Just for reference, in order to ensure that the raffle winner is selected fairly, I've created a simple Java application that selects the winner for me. For your reference, you can view the application here:

package org.coldsteelpirates.raffle;

import java.io.BufferedReader;
import java.io.FileNotFoundException;
import java.io.FileReader;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.util.Collections;
import java.util.Date;
import java.util.Random;

/**
* Created on Jan 2, 2006
*
* Selects a winner for the Cold Steel Raffle.
*
* The number of tickets held by each participant
* is first entered into the file tickets.dat. This file
* must be located in the root directory of this application.
* The file has the following format:
*
* [pirateName1],[numberOfTickets]
* [pirateName2],[numberOfTickets]
* [pirateName3],[numberOfTickets]
*
* An example file would look like this:
*
* Borragita,25
* Fullbeard,10
*
* This application reads that file and creates a list
* with each participants name in it. Each participant has
* their name put into the list one time for each ticket
* owned. So, in the example given above, Borragita's
* name would appear in the list 25 times, while Fullbeard's
* would appear only 10 times.
*
* Once the list is created, it is shuffled and a name is
* selected at random from the list.
*
* The output of this application includes:
*
* The number of tickets purchased by each participant
* The date and time of the drawing
* The name of the winner
*
* @author Fullbeard
*/
public class RaffleTicketSelector
{

public static void main(String[] args)
{
try
{
// Read the data file
BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("tickets.dat"));

ArrayList tickets = new ArrayList();

String[] lineParts = new String[2];
String nextLine = reader.readLine();
while ( nextLine != null )
{
lineParts = nextLine.split(",");

// For each participant, add that participant's name
// to the list once for every ticket held.
for ( int i = 0; i < Integer.parseInt(lineParts[1]); i++ )
{
tickets.add(lineParts[0]);
}

nextLine = reader.readLine();
}

// Shuffle the list.
Collections.shuffle(tickets);

// Create a random number generator and seed it with the
// current time. This ensures that the drawing is truly
// random.
Date rightNow = new Date();
System.out.println("Time of drawing: " + rightNow);
Random r = new Random(rightNow.getTime());

System.out.println("And the winner is...");
System.out.println("");
System.out.println(tickets.get(r.nextInt(tickets.size())));

// Probability Test Bed
//
// This can be used to gauge how closely this
// application adheres to the probability of any
// single participant being selected. I used this for
// testing and this portion of the code should remain
// commented out unless you're testing.
//
// My tests showed that the application remained
// very close to expected results, with some deviation
// due to the randomness of the selection.
//
// int winnerCount = 0;
// for ( int i = 0; i < 1000; i++ )
// {
// String winner = (String)tickets.get(r.nextInt(tickets.size()));
// if ( winner.equals("Borragita"))
// {
// winnerCount++;
// }
// }
// System.out.println("Borragita won " + winnerCount + " times.");

}
catch (FileNotFoundException fnfe)
{
System.out.println("Couldn't find input file tickets.dat.");
}
catch (IOException ioe)
{
System.out.println("An error occurred while trying to read the file tickets.dat: " + ioe);
}

}
}

Re: Cold Steel Event Pillage - Wednesday, Nov 29

Thanks to everyone that joined us for this pillage! And thanks to Springheel, Sailerboylee, and Ptg for handling the navigation and XO duties. I really hope everyone had a good time.

For the Worst Dressed competition, the final results were as follows:

2nd Runner Up: Corynn
1st Runner Up: Galasea
Winner: Ceemiyat

Honorable Mention: Galbatrox

Here's a shot of some of our outfits:

And, for the 50/50 raffle, we sold a total of 314 tickets, bringing the total winnable jackpot to 26,400 PoE. In addition, Harding was kind enough to add 20,000 PoE to the raffle, bringing the jackpot to 46,400 PoE!

Our winner was: Jamesdoom

Jamesdoom logged off before I did the drawing, but I'll get the PoE to him as soon as I can catch him online. Jamesdoom, please keep an eye out for me, as well.

Actual output from the selection program:

Time of drawing: Wed Nov 29 22:10:28 CST 2006
And the winner is...

Jamesdoom
