Fey's Giftwrap Challenge - Winners and Answer Key Posted

While designing my Midnight Islands? wrapping paper for the Birthday Bash contest, I realized that my entry would make a great contest itself. I talked to Taco and she not only gave me permission but even rustled up some prizes. I present to you...

Fey's Giftwrap Challenge - A Birthday Bash Bonus Contest

The Midnight Islands? wrapping paper pattern consists of a collage of 60 smaller pictures. Each island on Midnight is represented by one of the pictures. Your task it to match up every island with its picture. (Yes, I know. There are only 59 islands on Midnight. There is one picture that does not represent an island. Consider it an added challenge.)

Follow this link to see the wrapping paper. For convenience, I have numbered the 60 pictures. Some of the pictures will be immediately obvious. Others may requires some research, or some creative thinking. Have fun!

To enter:
-- E-mail your answers the to me at feylind@mindspring.com
-- Entries should be in the form of a numbered list, i.e. 1. Turtle, 2. Guava, etc. (And no, those aren't the right answers for 1 and 2.)
-- For the "extra" picture, list it as "not an island". Feel free to guess the significance of the picture if you like; there will be no penalty for guessing wrong. (If anyone guesses right, I'll probably rustle up an extra prize for them.)
-- Put some variant of "giftwrap challenge" or "puzzle entry" in your e-mail title. If it looks like spam, I may not read it.
-- Be sure to include your pirate name in your entry
-- One entry per person

Deadline:
All entries must be received by 12pm (yes, I do mean noon) PST on October 22.

Prizes:
1st through 5th place prizes will be awarded to the first 5 people to get all the islands identified correctly. If there are not 5 perfect answers, prizes will be awarded to those with the highest number of correct answers.

This is a contest is about giftwrap, so the prizes will be wrapped gifts, and I'm not telling you what is in them. The surprise is half the fun, after all. I will tell you this much: the 5 prizes have a total value of about 100k PoE.

Out of curiosity, if 5 people were to e-mail you with all the correct answers before the deadline, would the event be halted early?

Lol. I was just thinking about that. I just finished scoring the all entries submitted overnight, and I have two thoughts:

1. Shoulda made it harder, and
2. Don't you people have anything better to do on a Saturday night???

I have not received 5 all-correct entries yet, but at the current rate, it certainly won't take 2 weeks. After all the winners have been determined I will announce it. But I may wait a while to close the contest and put up the answers in case anyone else wants to try it just for fun.

I was stuck for the longest time on Zeta, until I realized that the picture of the woman in something like a bridal gown was Catherine Zeta-Jones. (I'd assigned that one to Nuptial.)

Re: Fey's Giftwrap Challenge - A Birthday Bash Bonus Contest

The last 3 I was stuck on were: Xi, O'Reilly and Beta.

With Xi I was so stuck, then my boyfriend came over, looked at the 11, and said 'hey that's XI in Roman numerals..' So yeah, duh me..

He also lays claim to the geekdom of O'Reilly Perl thing...

I really should split my prize with him, but as he doesn't play, it's mine allllll mine..

Was a great event though, really had me thinking about it.

Heph's Forge, Emperor, and Byrne... just because I thought Byrne would be way too easy to be the fire and it was a trick (darn me thinking to much!), Heph's Forge and Emperor because google images and wikipedia didn't bring anything up for me. Other than that, I loved it Fey! Since I didn't get all the answers that made me 100% sure I got them I didn't send you an email.

Re: Fey's Giftwrap Challenge - A Birthday Bash Bonus Contest

Emperor, Byrne, and Heph gave me the most trouble. I remembered a Rubens painting of Vulcan, but when i went to look for it, there weren't any other people in the images i found, so it threw me off.

I assumed Burn - Byrne was not the right kind of trick to be looking for, but given the four pictures i had left to choose from, they kind of had to go the way the did.

Yeah, that island pun is my very favorite. I know nothing about Perl, but I was at a programmer friend's once, and he had that book sitting on his coffee table. I looked at the title, the camel on the cover, and the name O'Reillly, and it hit me like a lightning bolt. I fell over laughing, and my friend, who doesn't play Y!PP, stared at me very strangely for a long time...

Re: Fey's Giftwrap Challenge - A Birthday Bash Bonus Contest

Turongo drove me nuts! I found references to the story, but not to Turongo house. I more or less guessed because the colour of the building looked right and I thought it might be a location from the legend. I had it and 45 left at the end and did stare at them for a while wondering if some anime program used the name Turongo!

Nu also stumped me for a while, until I took a good look at the animal and realized what it was, but using homophones was very clever (IMO).

Heck, the whole puzzle was very clever! Thank you Feylind.

Those of you who are jealous of me for getting the fastest all-correct answer may take heart in the fact that I actually thought the extra image must be an image of someone named "Feylind" or "Blackbeth", but couldn't find any corroborating info on the Web. I should have just put that in there as a guess. >8)

Last three I got - well Midsummer threw me just because I didn't see the donkley head the first dozen times I glanced at the photo. The only ones I wasn't 100% sure of within half an hour were the various fishes, since the images I was finding online didn't precisely match what I was seeing in the contest. (Sure, it's stripey, but other fish besides wrasses might be stripey too...)

Re: Fey's Giftwrap Challenge - A Birthday Bash Bonus Contest

sniff sniff.. i would've gotten it all correct... =( hmm, the one that got me stumped a bit was byrne, my last two were turongo and byrne.. i wasn't too sure about turongo at first since the pic in the wrapper was kinda "skewed" as compared to the map i found (shape of the island was slightly different) but that was closer to the pic than byrne is..

oh yeah, i got o'reilly from the yppedia (shape of the island) =D
