Okay, not quite all your questions, but instead all of the most common ones that we see an immediate 'on the list' or 'booched' for.

The format is that I'm grouping things by rough topic, and putting related items in brackets underneath. Leave any additions below and I will come back and edit this post. If somebody booches, and the link isn't here, please post the appropriate link(s) both in this thread and in the thread in question- please help me finish this list! The primary purpose of this thread is to be linked to when people booch, but it may also reduce the amount of booching in the first place if people come straight to it.

How do I get money?
First- there's no need to ask for money. Money is earned by having fun playing the puzzles in Puzzle Pirates, so we'd be stealing your fun to just give money away. Do you see a noticeboard next to you? If not, click on that minimap in the top right corner. You should see an icon with "noticeboard" next to it somewhere. Click on that and it'll display the notices. These allow you to train yourself in puzzles on navy ships, while getting paid, or even better, job with other friendly pirates on this fair ocean. After taking a look at some of the info, click apply on the crew that meets your fancy best, and you'll send an offer to their captain. Have fun and make money at the same time!

What's a crew? How do I join one?
A crew is often the most important part of your Puzzle Pirates experience. They're like your family- you can automatically sail together and board the ships of anyone in your crew. You can leave each other messages on a newsboard or on a ship. You will see which of your crew members are online automatically. The people you are most likely to sail with are your crew.

For this reason, it's quite important that you choose one that fits you. Only if they treat you in a way that you feel is good or fair should you join a crew. An officer or higher ranking player from that crew has to invite you- this just means that you can ask in chat. Some crews are more selective about who they recruit, so don't be discouraged if you're turned down.

Most crews expect you to stay with them when you join, so it's a long-term commitment. Don't be afraid to switch to a crew who you enjoy sailing with more, but telling people you are leaving is common courtesy.

What are hearties?
When you add someone to your hearty list, you can see when they're online as if they're a crew member. Adding or deleting a hearty effects BOTH people's hearty lists, so if one of you is at the maximum, they will need to free some space. Mostly people add long-time friends and important allies to their lists, so you likely won't need it until you start playing the wider social and political meta-games that are part of the culture of Puzzle Pirates.

How do I own a ship?
If you're not a subscriber, you don't really have all that much use for a ship. You can just job with others, and use their ships, while focusing on saving for some clothes or some swords. Once you've subscribed, and you're an officer, adding ships to your crew's fleet may be useful. Go to a shipyard, and click on the order products station, just like ordering clothes or swords.

I'm not a subscriber. What swords can I buy?
Foils, (your starting sword) long swords, short swords, and rapiers. You shouldn't need a list however, as the game will tell you down the bottom of the order screen if a sword is dissallowed to you. It will give you a different message if the store cannot make the sword for you, or if the store is deliberately not selling something.

I don't understand the information on the info button when I am looking for a job. What does it mean?
This button brings up the crew information for the person you are considering jobbing with. It shows their statement to the world, which may be a poem story or song, or a description of how their crew works, or even a crew history. Then it shows you all their members and what rank they are. Next to that is the important part: the booty shares.
These determine how much of the plunder you get if you go pillaging. You get payed less if the jobber share is smaller than the other shares, and more if it is bigger than the others. The actual size of the shares doesn't matter, only the difference between them. When joining a crew, you probably want one where captains or officers aren't paid much more than cabin people or pirates, although what's really important is how they treat you.

I want to play the swordfight puzzle!
Go jobbing with a crew that's pillaging, or hang out in the inn, or make some friends at the docks that also enjoy swordfighting. You can also challenge the NPPs, (Non-player-pirates, like NPCs in other games) but they may not be as interesting or helpful.

Someone has been offensive. What should I do?
Firstly, let me emphasise the importance of being responsible here. This is about people who are being objectively offensive, not just disagreeing with you. If that's the case, you may /complain them if you feel they are behaving in a way that is detrimental to the game. /Complaining people unnessecarily wastes OM time, so don't do it unless it's something that might need to go to their attention. If the person is shouting offensive things, or they have done something really appalling, you can /blackspot them. Neither of these commands should be used as a joke.

The List?: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=1391
The list is a list of every feature the developers wish to develop in the future. This thread is an archive of things that they have said on the forums they wish to add- there will be the occasional surprise and unexpected announcement, of course, because the ringers are clever and sneaky, like good game developers should be ;)

I'm Marooned! Help!!! : http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3200
Okay, you're not really marooned. See that bar to the side with all the buttons on top? Click on the one that says ye. (you) Then click on the button that says 'whisk to home island' and has the whisking symbol. This will transport you to your home island. The reason you were marooned was because you left the ship for an uncolonised island, and didn't disembark or whisk anywhere else before logging off.

What does (arrr/m'hearties/ahoy/other piratey nonsense) mean? : http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=2093
Like any game, we have our own jargon from both our theme (pirates) and simply from the gameplay mechanics. This will help you if a lot of the words we use to explain things are confusing, or if people talking like pirates is 'all greek to you.'

Where can I get a monkey/parrot/octopus/familiar? : http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=121
You have to win a tournament that shows exceptional skill on your part, OR do something really special that impresses the Developers. Familiars are not given out lightly and only the OMs and devs get them 'for free,' so to speak, and that's mainly so that they are easier to notice as OMs and devs. (or because they simply like mini-shoulder-animals?)

Booched! Searching, 'Newbies': http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3646
The forums used to be a very organised, informed, and discussion-centred base. A lot of people got upset when the first few influxes of new players arrived, and made suggestions/asked questions that had already been well and truly covered. These players are known to still 'booch' newer forumgoers if they haven't read this FAQ thread or attempted a search- so reading backward through the forums a bit won't hurt much :) (update: Dev intervention! Nobody will yell booched anymore, but it's still a GREAT idea to try a search before posting. Also remember ways to search that get you more hits/narrow down wide searches)

I want a cool avatar on the forums!
There are a lot of people offering or selling them- check the Bazaar forum. Also, if you're going to make your own, note that it has to be 80 pixels sqaure, and 6kb or under.

I want to be a captain, to sail my ship, and to wear cool hats with skulls on them! : http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=2229
(But enough is enough!) : http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4335
This game is a social game. If you want to be a captain, you're going to have to deal with the consequences of founding a new crew, one of them being part of a very small crew for quite a while. Many pirates believe it is better to join a small or medium-sized crew and advance from there.

I should be able to be an officer aboard my own ship! : http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?p=44398
The opinion among many is that this would ruin the social dynamic. Ships belong to the crew their member is part of for a reason- people offline would not be able to give permission to board, etc... in exceptional circumstances. All crew members are treated exactly the same as any other person of their rank, regardless of any fortunes worth of poe. (update: If you need to leave a ship somewhere, there are now shipboard notes so you can leave messages for people- this may help the "permission to board" problem)

My (item I ordered from a shoppe) is taking weeks! What can I do? : http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4333http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3505
Shoppes can only produce things so fast! When you get a quote, be careful to look at both the price AND the time it will take to produce. The time will not nessecarily be exact, but it should be roughly right. Shoppes can only use a certain amount of labour at a time, so they do have a maximum output. Shop around, and don't be afraid to pay more if you want/need the item sooner- this helps the economy develop! (note: at the time of writing, {2004/03/04 in YYYY/MM/DD} anything with a large amount of basic labour, ie. ships, is displaying a very inflated estimate)

Where is (island/archipelago/those skeletons)? : http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4046
(Azure): http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=2997
There's pretty much nothing to be said about these that I haven't already said myself. I hope you find them useful, and if you've got information to contribute, pm me or /tell me.

Help! My item crumbled- or Item Decay/Breakage: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4104
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3617
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3289
(Chart Decay): http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3855
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3344
If you have only ONE sword left, it will decay into a stick. When you have multiples, they dissapear. Apparantly, simpler swords decay faster than more complicated swords, so trade up from that foil ;)

Plain cloth items mostly decay in around a month, finer items in around 3 months - although some items seem to do this slightly differently, (labour types to blame?) apparantly a wrap could outlast flared pants, etc... - overall, 1 months for the obviously cheap things, and 3 months for the obviously expensive things. Some delicate items that may damage easily or decay will last 1 month. (eg. laurels, pantaloons (Nemo mentioned changing the laurel's decay time, but he might not have been certain about doing that))

Lower torso clothing now crumbles to rag pants/skirts instead of stripy pants, the color is completely random from blue/brown/red/white (ie. the colours your pirate can start off wearing) and not linked to the original clothing type or color.

Lifespan of charts was extended a little in a recent release, and now interarchs last longer than intra-arch...
(for those not familiar, intra- means inside, inter- means outside)

How can I get a cool picture by my name? : http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3103
Those are what we call 'avatars.' You can upload one using the profile page- but it has to be a .gif, .jpg, or .png under/exactly 80x80 pixels and... I think under/exactly 3kb, I'm not sure the exact figure.

Help! I can't do (puzzle): http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=2015
Elemental
There are loads of tutorials everywhere- this links to a lot of threads. I'll eventually put links to all the tutorial sites up, as they are all useful in one way or another.

About the oldest standing request of all, for now you can /who a friend, /cwho a crew that has multiple friends in it, or even /fwho a flag with many of your mateys in it, so we're a step closer. We also have /fo(fficer) chat, and /fb(roadcast), for intra-flag communication. Mail systems and flag communication are on the list somewhere, but I don't think they're incredibly high up.

Custom ship (colours/names):
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=5889 (shanghai points)
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4793 (custom names/colours - paint now implemented.)
Custom Naming is being currently used as a reward for winning events or recruiting subscribing members- crews now accrue "shanghai points" based on the number of greenies that subscribe whilst in their crew.

Tertiary Colours, Yellow on gowns, White on Swashbuckler's Jacket, White on Vest and Sash: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4455
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=240&start=141
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=618
Some clothes currently have tertiary (third) colours that cannot be changed. Some of us would like to see this, well, changed :) Of course it may indeed be a drain on the arrrtists when they could be doing arrrt for new clothes, new islands, and other important things, so may not happen any time soon. They already had to go through once and redo the secondary colours, apparantly.

Buying Shoppes: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4281
Shoppes are very much a flag endevour. It is possible to do it with one crew alone, but requires a lot of hard work.

Island Colonisation: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4281&start=66
This is a pending feature for midnight. In Azure islands were auctioned off, but here we will have the proper, in-game method being used. Colonising islands will require a powerful flag of many active crews, or very large active crews.

Mutiny?!! : http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=391
there is no in-game facility for mutiny. One must either demote/expel the captain from the crew, or start a new crew with a new captain, taking all of the members loyal to the new crew

/who and its extensions: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4180
/vwho is now implemented, giving information on ships and where they last ported. (which is useful for jobbers to see where a ship might be) /cwho, and /fwho are covered above under flag communications.

State of the ocean after midnight: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4314
Azure is now temporarily closed and will exist only as a testing server for the beta and alpha players. Midnight has had a few gameplay issues, but they are being slowly resolved.

Memorials? : http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3865
Monuments to noble crews who owned and inhabited the islands of azure, look for a monument bearing a sort of shield.

Might Ratings: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=2549
Your might rating can never be 100% accurate. If you have been losing a lot, your rating will be too low and you will be facing easier opponents as a consequence. The more you win, the higher your rating goes, and eventually you will need to lose so you may face opponents closer to your skill level again. Brigands will not have 100% accurate might ratings, so they may beat you easily if they are rated too low, or fall within a minute if rated too high.

Movement tokens: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4291
Battle navigation has recently been tweaked so that one must use tokens conservatively and wisely to be able to cannon your enemy, unless you have exceptional sailors.

Gunning Gauge: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4280
Currently one must enter the gunning puzzle to check if all cannons are loaded. There will be an indicator like for speed, damage, and bilge later on, although not nessecarily in the same format.

Can I customise my ship? : http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3679
Yes, it's on the list. It will not give you any significant advantage however, but perhaps tune your ship more to your playing style, like swords currently do.

Changing foraging: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4254
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3544
This may not need to be addressed as certain changes will come about simply from the implementation of crafting puzzles.

Experience Curve on midnight/Why am I doing so well yet still booching?: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4031
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4043
Not only your rating, (able, distinguished, legendary, ultimate, etc...) but also your score and performance are relative to everyone else in the ocean. As more new players arrive, the skill curve will resume its normal shape and you will not have to provide an outstanding performance just to achieve good.

(Pillaging swords from Brigands): http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4137
Brigands needed some tweaking after the last azure release. This made a lot of people impatient as it effected the spoils of pillaging. Numerous complaints and suggestions were made.

Sea Battle Moves Indicator: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4114
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4020
Another new feature in midnight, the first moves indicator for sea battle was introduced. it has drawn attentio to the fact that brigands often consider and change their moves multiple times, and the exact indicator was changed to reduce the confusion- you can now see how many of the four turns your opponent is doing something, but not in which order, and not if it is a shot or a move, or both.

Changes to labour system: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3282

Gunning Puzzle changes: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3958
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3820
The gunning puzzle used to spit out pieces much slower and have a speed dial. Now the speed depends on your performance, and the pieces can be made to zip out from the barrel very fast.

(Removal of swordfight column duplication): http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3830
There have always been suggestions to swordfighting, and a lot of people have burned out and quit because of overdoing it. 180? rotation keys for sailing and swordfighting have been requested for a long time. The column duplication bug was when a column from your sword pattern was picked, and then repeated for the length of the sword you dropped on your enemy, meaning only one column of your pattern was actually used, instead of three.

Swabbies: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4175

Black Ship: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=732
This ghostly ship punishes players who pick on easy prey! Beware for it is immune to cannons and rocks, and will fill your hull with shot before the undead monsters aboard come to get you...

New Clothing/Comments on existing clothes: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3934
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4181

Dumping Commodities: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4177

http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=647&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=25
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=2147
There's no real solution until the FULL economy is up and colonisation is well underway- however in the interim I believe markets are buying currently useless commodities- just sell what you can when you can, weigh up the risks and try and organise to do something else with your ship, too, while you're moving it towards an island where you can empty commodities
(What are these shoppes made of, anyway, straw?!): http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=1724
Shoppes, for some reason, have a mass limit, despite supposedly being sturdy structures.

Gems!: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4475
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4441
Gems are new commodities designed only to be sold between archipelagos. One type of gem will be found each day, and bough from you at the market at the 'captial' island of the archipelago that bears the same name. (capital islands have greek letters for names) They will also be randomly available at markets throughout the ocean- the further away from the destination island, the cheaper they will sell for. Gems are currently only available for the archs: ruby, diamond, emerald, jet, opal, and on the islands eta, alpha, epsilon, xi, and nu.

Banking changes/Loans: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4184
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=657
A more complex banking system is on the way, with a reason for being a bank's owner/manager, other than collecting withdrawal fees. Loans have been debated a lot, but the Ringers see no sensible way of implementing them.

How does rum work? : http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4233
Rum keeps the performance of your pirates at normal level. Without rum, damage and bilge will climb faster, and greater ratings will be required for the same effect. (making the damage and bilge continue to climb, as you would need higher ratings to keep them down)

Memorising (memming) Charts: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4144
You have to be in the nav puzzle when the ship hits the duty report, and you must show up on the duty report. Often you will need to travel a route 6-7 times to fully memorise it.

http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=1768
http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=1717
(Plantations/Gardens): http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4056
(Locked areas, Cabins, Rooms at Inns): http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4009
Houses and other locked areas are firmly on the list. You can stroll around many developed (and uncolonised, sometimes) houses, and see the ones already there. There are graphics for shoppe deeds in the game- player housing has been a long planned feature, but is incredibly unlikely to come in before flag wars and colonisation, and may even be later than sea monsters and adventure islands.

Keelhauling: http://www.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3759

Official FAQ: Q. Monsters? Oh no! Can my Pirate be killed?

No. Pirates can't die, either by the hand of mythical Monsters, or at Sea, by the hands of other Pirates, or otherwise.

They will, however, lose an arm (for a hook), or a leg (for a peg-leg), or an eye (for an eye-patch). Remember those wizened old Pirates?

Fortunately, nothing stops a grizzled old Pirate from sailing the Seven Seas as well as any other, if not better, what with all their valuable knowledge, experience, tall tales, and anecdotes of the good old days, when Pirates were Pirates and...

I've been threatening to do this for quite some time and hopefully people will use it to help the newbies. It does need some help to be completed. Feel free to even mention things that have been booched, even if you don't have a link. I will eventually do searches for these things myself.

This is awesome, 54x. I have two suggestions, though:

First, I'd link into the real FAQ wherever possible. It's nice that there are some threads that handle a common question, but the more people play with the FAQ, the more they'll learn.

[size=9](Tangent: If someone posts "how u get monky?", we point to the FAQ that handles in-game questions. If someone posts "There should be a buddy list", we point to The List. If someone posts "Let's put the slider back in gunning" or "Either small or large crews suck", we point them to... what? We need a catchy name for frequent forum topics that are neither FAQs about the game nor on The List.)

Second, I think it would be better to write a short summary of these points as well as presenting a big list of links. I think it's useful to provide a quick answer as well as providing a place to discuss the answer.

Maybe something like this:
I woulda wrote:
Barbers, Hair colour potions, ways to change appearance:
If these become available, they will likely be potions sold at an apothecary.

Booched! Searching, 'Newbies':
There was a joke once that the skill of searching, researching, and reading the FAQ was a puzzle and should be rated as such. To be told a post is "Booched!" is not supposed to mean that the ideas were bad, but that the topic had been covered before. There is debate on whether this is trend is appropriate.
* Link

If you'd like help with this, let me know-- no, wait, let all of us know. I can't edit your post, so I don't know how we'd work together on this.

True. Next revision I'll browse through the FAQ and where it co-incides with mine I'll put an italic link at the top of the topic.

The help I would generally like is simply links to discussed topics, and telling me here or by PM when you notice a booch I haven't covered.

Oh my... I've booched the forums in a much realer sense.

My FAQ is too big to post here! lol.

I tried stripping out the extraneous bits at the top and bottom of the post... but to no avail. So I'll convert it to HTML in a bit, and then post it on Elemental and link it from here. You'll just have to wait for all of my helpful footnotes ;)

Any chance of keeping it here as a two-part post? I think there's a definite advantage in not asking people to click to an external link to read a FAQ.

That's odd- It seems to have worked despite the errors I got when working on it. (if you need to know for web admin reasons, it said something like that I exceeded thirty seconds while loading) The italics are the footnotes and there are a few new and restructured items. There are a few links that're under more than one topic by now, too. I'll also update my map soon so that the skeletons actually show up on it, like I've said they do here :)

Assuming it got through, I've added a few more general ingame questions that may help educate anyone lurking here about why us old yellows react so badly to being asked for money, about how to get a ship, and other such questions. Feel free to PM me if you've got a good question to go up there with the others.

Good question. I'll put it up there. When you're shunned, you can't talk to anyone (I think though that if you have access to it, /fo is still allowed) for either 5 minutes (if the shun is due to a blackspot) or an amount of time determined by an OceanMaster (if the shun came at the hands of an OM). It's not very nice. Usually it happens because you have been swearing or being offensive in a rather public place, and people really need you to quiet down.

Shuns (blackspots) are also reported to the OMs like complaints are, but I believe the log is a lot less detailed.

Shanghais are earned by crews when they recruit new players who subsequently sign up to play the game. Shanghais are used to rename ships and crews. You can find more information on Shanghais in Cleaver's announcement thread. Buying and selling of Shanghais has a sticky thread in the Bazaar.

I know it was posted recently enough, but damned if I can find it (and after sifting through several pages, I'm annoyed with it). With the 4th of July coming up (and it being a huge travel weekend for us Americans), I can't remember if blockades are called off for this weekend or not. There was a post that had the holidays where blockades were not possible. Anyone either remember the post, or know the holidays?

See, now I could've sworn that there was a real topic about it. I remember that there was some discussion about Xmas and possibly New Year's as being two certain dates when (should they fall on weekends), blockades were disabled.

Though that all could be part of some odd dream I had. Considering the one I had last night, it wouldn't surprise me one bit.
