A Farewell to Aramis--over 500k in prizes to give away!

Our flagmate and longtime Heretic, Aramis, is leaving the high seas to turn "respectable" as fatherhood looms in his near future. Seraph's Nightmare (SN) is hosting a set of 5 oceanwide events in his honor as he retires.

1. Shanghai Showoff
2. What Not To Wear Screenshot Contest
3. Sink or Swim 6-pirate race aboard Merchant Brigs
4. Tall Tales/Tall Ships Boasting Competition
5. Villainous Voyage A bakeoff event for scupperin' swabs and nefarious ne'er-do-wells

*****

Shanghai Showoff

Cruising along Midnight's shipping lanes, I've seen some fantastic renames--from vanity-style to witty puns to event mementos, and everything in between. Here's your chance to show off your fancy rename!

Who: Individual Pirates
What: show a judge your renamed vessel for a chance at some sweet poe
When: from 1 July to 15 July 2006
Where: ingame on the Midnight Ocean
Prizes: 1st--40k poe, 2nd--20k poe, 3rd--15k poe to top 3 overall, 10k poe to all winners in each of 3 newly created categories

Rules: Any time between 1 July 2006 and 15 July 2006, find a Seraph's Nightmare Royal ingame and ask them (politely!) to look at your renamed vessel. Vessel names will be checked via the trade window interface on the deed. You *must* have the vessel deed to have it count--no showing off your friend's really cool rename, even if they don't play anymore. If you are concerned about timezone issues, you may set up an appointment for a judge to come view your vessel by emailing SNEvents at gmail dot com with the subject line "Shanghai Showoff Appointment".

You may show up to two renamed vessels. The SN royal will record your pirate name and the vessel name(s) you show them, as well as a brief comment about the rename to give the judges context for the rename (ex: Pirate--Blackfletch Vessel--Arrogant King Comment--Blackfletch is the King of Seraph's Nightmare). A working copy of the rename list will be kept on the Seraph's Nightmare forum, and the main Y!PP forum event thread will be updated from this list often. A backup spreadsheet will also be kept out of game, just in case of forum boochiness. **In the event that there are 2 players with the same rename for their vessel, only the first player who shows the particular name to a judge will be allowed to use it for the contest.**

At the close of the contest, the List will be sent to 5 SuperSekrit Judges, who will be looking for wit (is it punny or amusing?), flair (does it have style?), singularity (are there similarly-renamed vessels? ex: Rare Rudd is *very* close to Unique Rudd; there are a few "drunk" or "drunken" renames, etc.), and pizzazz (is it really neat-o keen?).

Winners will be posted in the Farewell to Aramis thread at the main Y!PP forums no more than 3 days after the close of the contest. Winners will then have up to one week to receive their prize. Any prizes not picked up within one week will be forfeit.

NOTE: due to the sheer volume of entrants, we are adding some categories to allow more mates a chance to win poe. Note that the top 3 winners overall will win the FULL prizes stated...all other winners in the newly created categories will win 10k each. (Hey, 10k is better than none, right?) The categories are Vanity Renames, Punny Renames, and Other Renames. For vanity, the boat name must have some reference to your pirate's name, your crew's name, or your flag's name. For Punny renames, the boat must be a real fish/sea creature with a clever "adjective". Everything else goes into the "other" category. Boats only qualify for one category--we'll make distinctions as best we can. We *may* have a special "WTF were the OMs thinking?!" category as well, with prizes that reflect the theme of the boat's rename.

*****

What Not To Wear Screenshot Contest

After roaming the high seas for many years (well, ok, somewhere around two...), our flag has come to the realization that some pirates just don't know how to dress themselves. Mayhap you've seen some of these strangely clad pirates in your travels as well, or perhaps you're proud to be one of the prime offenders!

Who: Individual Pirates
What: screenshot and caption contest featuring badly-dressed pirates and your own wicked wit
When: 1 July 2006 - 15 July 2006
Where: screenies taken ingame, then submitted by email
Prizes: 1st--male *or* female outfit, viewable at http://quidproclothes.com/galleries/7162 (outfit options for 1st place are "Dancin' Queen" and "Damn Near Kilt 'Em"--colors not negotiable) 2nd--male *or* female outfit, viewable at http://quidproclothes.com/galleries/7162 (outfit options for 2nd place are "Brace Yerself" and "In De Nile"--colors not negotiable) 3rd--male *or* female wig, any color combinations except black or gold

Rules: When you have found a pirate with questionable fashion sense, capture him or her in a screenshot. PLEASE be kind and erase or blur the pirate's name on your submission. Once you've gotten your fashion victim, add a witty comment using Paint or Photoshop or some other editing trickery (NOT using game chat...when we post these later the game chat will be too small to read).

You must go out into the game to look for badly-dressed pirates--no hanging out in a Tailor and trying on outfits. We're observing the fashion-challenged in their natural environment, *not* in a lab setting (i.e., not a staged scene).

The badly-dressed pirate in your submission must *not* be your own pirate.

You may only submit one entry for this contest. If you do submit more than one entry, only the first entry will be considered.

After your screenshot is captioned and the subject's name is suitably disguised, email your submission to SNEvents at gmail dot com with the subject line "What Not To Wear Entry". At the close of the contest, submissions will be posted for judging and your viewing pleasure. A link will be provided once the contest is closed. Judging will take no more than 3 days, and winners will be posted to the Farewell to Aramis thread. Winners will then have 1 week to arrange prize pickup. Prizes not arranged after 1 week will be forfeit.

Judges will be looking for:
view/pose--does the view show off the outfit to advantage? if it's not a full-front shot, does it make sense in the context of the submitted comment?
outfit--is it gloriously awful? do the colors or items clash, or are they amusing in some other way (ex: pirate resembles a demented leprechaun in the green/lime kilt getup)?
commentary--is it humorous, barbed, witty, and appropriate to the outfit? (note: keep commentary relatively clean--if it's against the ToS it's also not cool for this contest)

Sink or Swim 6-pirate race aboard Merchant Brigs

What could be a better test of your skills in shipboard management than a race where you begin with full damage and full bilge? Come out to see which pirates Swim to glory and which mates Sink in defeat! (no vessels will actually be sunk during this race)

Who: Teams of up to 6 pirates
What: Start with full damage/bilge and race from Hephs Forge to Xi...aboard merchant brigs!
When: Race Begins Saturday, 15 July 2006, at 2 p.m. Pacific
Where: Start at Hephaestus' Forge, race to Xi (4 leagues)
Prizes: 1st--12k and an Orange bunch of roses trinket per pirate on the team, 2nd--6k and a Grey knobby coral trinket per pirate on the team, 3rd--3k per pirate on the team Winners posted below!

You *must* preregister for this event, either by seeing Madmarymeade ingame or by sending an email to SNEvents at gmail dot com with the subject line "Sink or Swim registration". We will allow registration up to 2 hours before the event begins. In your registration, include the team captain's name, the names of the other pirates (up to 5 others) on the team, and the name of the mbrig you will be using. (Rental mbrigs are available on a limited, case-by-case basis. In your registration email, let us know if you will need a rental.)

All race boats must be at Hephaestus' Forge no later than 45 minutes before the event begins. 45 minutes before the race begins, we will begin jobbing mates into Forbidden Dreams so we can communicate over /crew chat. Your team is responsible for stocking your ship, fulfilling the initial damage and bilge requirement, and charting (if you don't have it memorized, charts are available for 106 poe on Hephs and Xi at the Shipyards).

All vessels must begin the race will full damage and full bilge. This is your team's responsibility. Seraph's Nightmare can provide someone who will happily fill your mbrig with holes in a "pvp", or you can do this yourself by finding a willing partner of your own. If you want to have SN shoot you, include that in your registration information. Note that during the damage "pvp", you shouldn't carpent or bilge--the whole point of this race is to start with full damage and bilge. After the race begins, of course, swing those hammers and pump like mad!

After your vessel is completely damaged and full of water and is hovering off the coast of Hephs Forge, do *not* re-port your boat. Ask (politely!) over /jcrew chat for a judge to come verify your damaged status. Once your status has been verified, you *must* remain deported, but may *not* set sail (this will keep your damage/bilge from clearing and will prevent cheating). Porting or setting sail after your damage status has been verified is grounds for immediate disqualification.

During the race, the volunteer judges will be /vw-ing race vessels to make sure there are only the 6 registered mates aboard. Having more than 6 mates aboard will immediately disqualify your team, so we suggest making sure your home crew knows not to accidentally hop on mid-race.

The Starting Line judge will announce a countdown (on your marks, get set, go!) and the race will begin. The first team to reach Xi Island wins. The race should take no more than 1 1/2 hours, tops. (In our practice run using sloops and an 8-league course, the winner reached the finish line in under 30 minutes.)

Timeline:
--2 hours before race--registration closes
--45 minutes before race--boats must be at Hephs Forge, jobbing into event crew begins
--30 minutes before race--damage verification begins
--10 minutes before race--final status check
--30 minutes after the race--prize delivery completed

Teams must:
1) preregister with the following information: a) team captain and names of up to 5 other teammates, b) name of merchant brig your team will be sailing, c) if your team needs a rental vessel (note that there is a limited # of rentals available, and they will be offered on a case-by-case basis), d) if your team wants Seraph's Nightmare to assist you with the full damage/bilge requirement
2) provide their own charting (charts from Hephaestus' Forge to Xi are available at shipyards on both islands for 106 poe)
3) provide their own rum and shot
4) provide their own initial damage/bilge if not requesting SN to do it for them

Teams must not:
1) allow more than 6 mates aboard their vessel during the race (immediate disqualification)
2) port their vessel or set sail after their damage has been verified by a judge (immediate disqualification)
3) overuse /jcrew chat and/or spam the chat (after being warned once, your team will be disqualified. note that valid questions or requests will be honored, but repeatedly asking 'when do we start' is a one-way ticket to DQ-ville.)
4) PvP other racers

Tall Tales/Tall Ships Boasting Competition

Are ye the biggest braggart Midnight's ever seen? Were ye born in a storm on a howlin' morn, and now ye strike fear in the hearts o' yer enemies near and far at just the mere mention o' yer name? Come out to Hephaestus' Forge and bring yer biggest braggin' while we seek to discover who's the best boaster among us!

Who: Individual Pirates
What: Boasting Competition. Falshehoods Encouraged.
Where: aboard the grand frigate Famous Ling
When: Sunday, 16 July, 11 a.m. Pacific
Prizes: 1st--shanghai'd sloop Silver-Tongued Devilray (Grey rails/Maroon sides) stocked to 20r/100s, 2nd--sloop Witty Salmon stocked to 20r/100s, 3rd--ship in a bottle, 4th--whisk potion and fish skeleton Winners posted below!

Rules: Register with Madmarymeade by 15 minutes before the event begins either ingame or by sending an Email to SNEvents at gmail dot com with the subject line "Tall Tales/Tall Ships registration" -- do NOT PM her at this forum to register.

20 minutes before 11 a.m. on 16 July, get jobbed into Forbidden Dreams and hop aboard the Famous Ling so we can briefly review rules. Invite your friends and crewmates along, as the judging will be done by audience participation! **Note that anyone, participant or audience, who chats overmuch or offensively will be planked from the vessel and removed from the competition.**

Madmarymeade will state a category for the participants to boast about, and give them 3 minutes to compose and send a /tell to the pirate Emmo with a boast that fits this category. Categories will NOT be announced ahead of time. (Example: Madmarymeade says, "Boast about yer smile!" You tell Emmo, "Me teeth be shiny as pearls! I be the envy of every shark in the sea.") All boasts must fit within a single /tell. If you don't make it before the 3 minute cutoff, you are disqualified (there will be a reminder countdown). Pirate lingo is encouraged, but otherwise proper spelling is expected (no "1337-speak" or internet abbreviations, in other words).

Madmarymeade will then have groups of 5 competitors read their boasts aloud aboard the vessel--the same boast they sent Emmo in a /tell--and the audience will move around the ship to stand next to the person in each grouping that they think gave the best boast. The 3 pirates out of each group of 5 that get the most votes will move on to the next round. Players are encouraged to stay aboard and continue 'voting' even after they are out of the running.

By having pirates send Emmo /tells containing their entire boast, it gives everyone the same time limit to compose a boast. This way, players who speak later in a round don't have an advantage over players that boast earlier. Play will continue in this fashion until there are 3 boasters remaining. The final 3 boasters will have 8 minutes to compose a boast that is up to 2 /tells in length. Judging for the final 3 will occur as it did with all the others--by audience participation.

Villainous Voyage A bakeoff event for scupperin' swabs and nefarious ne'er-do-wells

Who: Individual Pirates--preregistration encouraged--up to 80 mates may play
What: 45-minute long bakeoff where you must puzzle at each type of shipboard station (carp, bilge, sails, guns)
When: Sunday, 16 July, 1 p.m. Pacific time
Where: aboard a vessel off the coast of Hephaestus' Forge. Vessel size determined by participant turnout.
Prizes: 1st - 50k, 2nd - 35k, 3rd - 30k, 4th - 25k, 5th - 20k, 6th - 15k, 7th - 10k, 8th - 6k, 9th - 5k, 10th - 4k Winners posted below!

The Bake Off
We will board a ship, deport, and immediately engage in a PVP that will last 45 minutes. Scores will be calculated by puzzle scores (1 point for Incredible, 2 points for Excellents, 3 points for Good, 4 points for Poor, and 5 points for Learning/Booched) and position on the duty report (e.g. The top carper will get 1 point, the second carper will get 2, etc). The lowest score overall wins. Spectators are encouraged to come along on the sail.

The Twists
This will be a 45 minute PVP. Gun orders will be issued to all participants. You will be scored on ALL puzzles collectively (except navigation). This means your score in sails will be added to your score in bilge, carp and gunnery. It is entirely up to you how long (or short) you stay on each puzzle. Rocketboy will be killing fish at random to keep the guns empty for loading. If you do not show up on the duty report, you will be assessed a 30 point penalty for each station missed. After the 45 minutes are up, we will disengage and return to port. The duty report at port will be used to determine scores. There will also be No Rum aboard the vessel!

My Favorite Twist
This will take place on a War Brig if we have 25 participants, a War Frig if we have 60 participants, and a Grand Frig if we have more than 60 participants. This means stations will be limited, and to make them even more limited, we'll have a few alts roaming the ship to camp stations for short periods of time. We might even throw down some furniture to block off walk ways from time to time.

Other stuff:
- Registration will be ONLY by email or seeing Madmarymeade ingame. To register by email, send an email to SNEvents at gmail dot com with the subject line "Villainous Voyage Bakeoff Registration".
- Open to subscribers and non-subscribers
- All disputes disputes and decisions will be settled by Rocketboy, however he deems fit.
- Judging will be completed within one hour of the contest's close. Winners will be announced over /crew chat and posted in this thread.

Re: A Farewell to Aramis--over 400k in prizes to give away!

Reminder for today's (15 July) Mbrig race:

Your boat must be at Hephs Forge no later than 1:15 p.m. pirate time. If you are borrowing a vessel, you need to let a SN royal know by 1 pm pirate time.

We will begin assisting with damage at 1:15 p.m. and damage checks will begin at 1:30 pm pirate time.

The race will begin as close to 2 pm as we can manage.

There is still time to enter the Shanghai Showoff, and there is still time to enter the What Not To Wear screenshot contest. Thanks to all who have participated!

Re: A Farewell to Aramis--over 400k in prizes to give away!

Wow, what a race! We had 12 teams participating.

First place, far ahead of the rest of the pack, was Tibiaking's team aboard the Cool Gar (Tibiaking, Cons, Dubbrub, Yukinon, Southpaw, and Perfidius). They each won an inscribed Bunch of Roses trinket and 12k.

Second place was a tie that was far too close to call. Thanks to Apollo, we were able to give both of the 2nd place teams coral trinkets for their outstanding efforts. Bridalgirl's team aboard the Strong Pickerel (Bridalgirl, Maetar, Gently, Kahn, Wedekind, and Graill) and Dbavirt's team aboard the Gifted Roach (Dbavirt, Onelove, Sabata, Mckennas, Whitefire, and Snowmink) pulled into port at Xi almost simultaneously. The 2nd place winners each got a Knobby Coral trinket and 6k.

Aeries' team aboard the Strange Mullet (Aeries, Corynn, Epidemic, Syna, Tawren, Ilusnipez) took 4th place. They each received 3k.

5th place: Cheshirey's team aboard the Active Bass
6th place: Inkypinky's team aboard the Boring Mako
7th place: Seerauber's team aboard the Happy Marlin
8th place: Vova's team aboard the Classy Flounder
9th place: Pawz's team aboard the Rude Sardine
10th place: Ravenmoon's team aboard the Patient Bluegill
11th place: Sailmaker's team aboard the Loud Lamprey
12th place: Detork's team aboard the Lucky Spot, dropped out at the halfway point

For being such good sports and finishing the course, Sailmaker's team (Sailmaker, Evillaurian, Mogget, Laotze, Ianthekorean, and Decemberain) received maps from Hephs - Xi.

Good show, everyone!

Thanks for a great fun event mates - and for the awesome sloop!

Aramis, I wish you all the luck in the world with the baby. May he/she be the light of your life and bring you much joy :).

PS. Remember to read him/her H. C. Andersen's fairy tales ;).

Wow, so many awesome ship names! Thanks for hosting this event so we can see some of these gems we might not otherwise hear about. I wonder which ones make the OMs groan and which ones they particuarly enjoy?

Woohoo! That's the last time I'm likely to beat Dub and X simultaneously. This was a good contest, and not only because I won. It gave a bunch of people a chance to show off. That's just good fun all around.
