YPP Maps! Reply to this Post

Introducing YPP Maps!

YPP Maps is a mashup of Google Maps, and imagery from YPP. All 5 oceans are visible, from a full world view, down to eye level. There are still a few lingering issues, but the worst have been worked out. Feedback is welcome.

Many would agree that a lot of information could be displayed in the maps besides just imagery, and yes, it's in the works. The discussion board has some information on the basic direction I'm headed. For now though, simply enjoy a birds eye veiw of your favorite online fantasy world!

this is absolutely marvy.

Thes.

(I'd refocus it so that the closest you can get in is the closest range, and you have a typo in your 'no data available' level, but this is utterly picky - this is an incredibly nifty toy!)

Congratulations, you've found a bug. All zoom levels should be visible, I just checked and Cobalt seems to be having trouble at the closest range, though Vid appears ok. Where were you looking?

I'm actually seeing no data available for the closest zoom level on all oceans except Sage.

I'm convinced my ISP hates me. Re-uploading data is taking forever on a connection that keeps dying. I have to keep restarting it, but I'm my St. Patties day plans are going to interfere with completion for the rest of the weekend. I'll restart it when I can, on the road, but it will probably be after the weekend before it's all up.

In the mean-time, if anyone in Boston wants to enjoy a Guiness before the Murphys show, yell!

That would be so awesome, except maybe for the stalking part. As impossible as it is, I would love to peek on other people's ships with this tool.

If it did become live, it would also need to have a(n equally impossible) pirate search function that would be able to focus on the exact spot a pirate is in if they aren't in a building or offline. That would greatly aid in Trillian's stalking.

All that said, it's definately cool as it is.

Now, if double clicking would automatically zoom in and center on the point.

Oh -- around zoom level 5 or so, it switches from a grey background to a blue background

EDIT: Any chance you could get the URL "maps.puzzlepirates.com"?

There are a few pointy-clicky issues like this that might be added.

Oh -- around zoom level 5 or so, it switches from a grey background to a blue background

From zooms 0-10, each ocean is put on a scrolled parchment, much like the "Ye Known World" map, but 11-13 have simply islands on the blue ocean background. 14-17 are like 11-13, but the ocean has texture. If that's not what you're talking about, create a link with the 'Link to this page' where you see it happening, and I'll try to reproduce it.

Any chance you could get the URL "maps.puzzlepirates.com"?

It would be neat, but up to the Ringers. They put up a wiki after deciding it was useful enough, however, making something "official," requires they assume maintenence costs, and further development costs. They're aware of the maps site, and are probably happy I'm burning my spare time on it for now ;-)
