Judging the winners against the non winners, the following is what I found to hold.

Any entry using or manipulating the portrait was instantly thrown out.

Synful - Disqualified cuz used portrait
Nitronline - Disqualified cuz used portrait
Flip - Disqualified cuz used portrait
Piratepeace - Disqualified cuz used portrait
Quintillaz - Disqualified for unknown
Siobhan - Disqualified cuz used portrait
Ponytail Guy - Disqualified for unknown
Polly - Disqualified cuz used portrait
Capearl - Disqualified for unknown
Leif - Disqualified cuz used portrait
Love - Disqualified cuz used portrait
Markozeta - Disqualified for unknown
Hawkings - Disqualified for unknown
Anabanana - Disqualified cuz used portrait
Gracely - Disqualified for unknown

My submissions didn't draw the OM per say I guess, I am guessing that the contest in itself was not simply draw an avatar, but a continuation of the "Draw the Oceanmaster series".

Copying Nemo's art style being the predominant judging factor.

Art is subjective and all of the entries were done very creatively and everyone should be proud of their entries.

All of mine were hand drawn using illustrator (light pen art tablet), freehand and photoshop, with only using the portrait for the first entry and the background being hand drawn.

Yeah, I'd like to know how I can improve or what not... I have no earthly clue what yer judgin' basis is so I have no clue what to do.

Well there was nothing in the rules to suggest that Apollo might not have questionable taste!!

(*ducks for cover*)

Isn't art always subjective, always open to personal preferences and impossible to quantify.

If he's going to have these terrific avatars attached to his name for the forseeable future he's going to want to go with what he likes even if that doesn't fit with some other people's ideas.

Yay to the winners!!

I was not aware that using the portrait would disqualify me... I checked the rules, and didn't see anything about it. Was it disqualification, or he just didn't want his portrait in it? I should have just made a hand drawn! darn! I shouldn't have used his stupid head! I could of drawn that easily!

Har! Any way, good job winners, and if you see me around, show me what you won!

The list you quote is one entrant's analysis, nothing to do with me. No entries were disqualified. About half the entrants got some kind of prize, but I also liked many of the entries that didn't get a specific mention.

My task was to choose my favorites, and that's what I did. My sole criterion was how much I wanted to use the entry as an avatar. :)

Thank you all again for your great work!

Woohoo! When I saw the enormous contact sheet of entries I was mightily impressed - so I count myself lucky that my silly sneaky faces happened to appeal. Here I am happily taking a nap with little Shoggy:
