[Contest]Spooky Pirate Vignettes - Win a Parrot! Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

This contest is over. Thank you for participating. Prize winners are listed in this linked post.

As summer passes into autumn a cool north wind blows across the Oceans and the balmy seas turn a bit chilly. The leaves begin to turn. Pirates tend to bundle up a little tighter at night. Winter is just around the corner.

But even as the weather loses the summer heat, a greater chill grows in the hearts of sailors everywhere. As the sun retreats and the nights grow long, the supernatural forces rise.

As the world nears the end of October, these forces reach their peak of power. Pirates retell tales of past encounters with things that are not quite of this world in hushed voices. They cast furtive glances behind them. Every creak and groan, every light and bank of fog brings to mind the fearful times past.

Tell us your tale of an encounter between pirates and the supernatural.

The rules:
1. Stories must have a topic of the supernatural and relate to pirates in some fashion.

2. Hard limit of 500 words. Titles, author attributions, and "The end" are not counted. That means that if you have 501 words, the story will be disqualified. You may find an online word count resource here.

3. We will be checking grammar and spelling, so do your best to copyedit it.

4. One entry per player. Entries must include an Ocean of play and a pirate.

5. Entries must be posted to this linked thread.

6. Entries must be posted by 11:59 p.m. PDT, on October 28th.* The entries thread will be closed at that time.

7. Have fun!

Grand prize: A parrot on the ocean of your choice.

Other prize winners will each get to choose one of the following:

Spooky Fishname sloop
Orange/Black shirt and pants outfit
Lime/Black shirt and pants outfit
Pumpkin outfit (hat, shirt, pants, shoes)
Candy corn outfit (hat, shirt, pants, shoes)
Three skulls (furniture)
Orange/Black flag tapestry
Lime/Black flag tapestry
Black/Orange sword

*Note that throughout the month of October, many places in the world will switch from Local Daylight Time to Local Standard Time (or vice versa, in the southern hemisphere.) The United States does not switch until October 30th, so that Pirate Time will remain as PDT (UTC-7) until then, when it becomes PST (UTC-8). You may want to see this page to make sure you do not end up missing the deadline due to confusion. It is always best to get your entry in earlier, just to be safe.

*These rules are 389 words long.

Sounds great, just a question, is the black/orange sword a sword of the winner's choice? Like a Scimi or Falch, or is it set?

How well the story is written and how well the judges like the story. So it will be judged on both presentation, including spelling and grammar, and content.

This may sound like a stupid question, but I've heard lots of people define it differently. For the purposes of this contest, how are you defining 'supernatural'?

Well, that its nice is certain, but there are only two little things: 1 do you have to start like the tread started, in autumm, or not?
2. The grammar check might be ok, but its kinda unfair for all the hundreds of pirates that r not english, or english speaking. so I hope the judges think of that too in there criteria.

Use your brain, and deduce the roots: super, as in over, and natural, meaning, uh, natural. Perhaps best defined as "that which is not natural, and implies the existence of something beyond mortal ken."

Usually it's "afterlife" type stuff, but there's a bunch of other stuff that falls into the category as well.

I prefer not to constrain the authors to a specific definition. If you are able to surprise us, so much the better.

You may find the dictionary.com definition here.

1 do you have to start like the tread started, in autumm, or not?

Not at all.

2. The grammar check might be ok, but its kinda unfair for all the hundreds of pirates that r not english, or english speaking. so I hope the judges think of that too in there criteria.

This is a writing contest. Part of writing is being able to use acceptable grammar and spelling. The resources to help you with these - including other writers on these forums - are numerous.

That said, I have often found that people whose primary language is not English often have exemplary grammar and spelling.

Cool another kind of contest that involves Bia and is not "Bothering Bia."

That does explain some of the /tells I get during my shifts. I had not realized there was a contest. Would it be possible for someone to provide me the rules of the contest, so that I might be able to participate better?

The story should pertain to the first rule. I believe that is the only one dictating anything regarding content. Beyond that, you may write the story about whatever you desire.

Hehe...how lucky that we just started studying vignettes in Creative Writing!

This leads to a question, though: Do you want a strict vignette (Usually plotless description designed to evoke a particular feeling or mood) or, as it sounds in your initial post, simply an extremely short anecdote?

How does rule 4 apply to this ?

What I would like to know is that since it requires the mention of the ocean and the pirate, is this part of the writers bio or a necessary element of the story ?

This is correct. It is also so that it is easier to determine that each player has only submitted one entry.

how do we know who the winner is and how will the winner be notify of this?

As with previous contests, I will make a post in this thread listing all the winners. I will likely send private messages to them, as well.

Either is fine. So long as the stories are no longer than 500 words, you may write what you wish.

Ahem let me first say DO NOT TRY THIS, you are welcoming in a ban or at least the inability to speak (if the Oms can do that)

Upon request of bia I am placing the rules for the game "Bothering Bia".

The objective: To make bia so annoyed that she actually uses bad grammer or spelling. No one has ever won this game. This can be done through either random tells, or even a clear and consise petition.

Rules:

1. The more odd the tell the more attention she will pay to it.
2. By spaming and typing "a;kljdfa;lsdhf;lj" she is likly not to look
3. Insulting Bia wont work, nor will menial questions like "How do I send a tell?"
4. To get the best reaction, send random strange well thought out, and annoying questions.

Try to send only one or two an hour.

Here are some examples
"Where does PoE come from?"
"why is my peg leg is upside down?"
"Why don't we have any noses?"
"If I turn a turtle upside down will it wake up"
"How come a falcion looks like a bannana?"

Those are the rules. ejoy!

To a more serious note, Can these story's be a swort of Ship log or diary recording or somthing to that effect. Also what colors can the parrot be? Or is it orange and black?

When Bia said:

Grand prize: A parrot on the ocean of your choice.

She meant Ocean of your choice and maybe your choice of which color parrot. If not, it probally will be orange/black or black/orange as Halloween is approaching, fast!
I am just noting, she will reply, soon, though, with the correct answear.

This topic/style is fairly well suited to a "dialogue" type piece. (Gather round, lads, and listen to my tale...) If it was used, obviously grammar and language choice might suffer to create a "dialect" effect. Is this acceptable, or are we encouraged to write in the third person?

I am currently wearing a black and orange parrot on Midnight. This is the representation of the prize, but I believe any combination of colours except all white and all black are available.

You are encouraged to write the best story you are able to. If doing so involves playing with the language, so be it.

I'm having problems with word count. I chopped up my story presently, and Microsoft Word says 500. Bia's site ( http://javascript.internet.com/forms/word-count.html ) says 513. A second site ( http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/script2/countwords.shtml ) says 494. Should I use Bia's as the end-all and remove a few more words? And am I allowed to edit the story still?

A second site ( http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/script2/countwords.shtml ) says 494. Should I use Bia's as the end-all and remove a few more words? And am I allowed to edit the story still?

You may edit your story as much as you desire until the deadline. I shall look and see if I can discern the reason for the discrepancy.

Edit: After checking, I see an error in the site I chose. It only counts words as connected letters. Any other letters (such as various punctuation) will be counted as a space would be. So it counts such things as "well-mannered" as two words. That would not be so bad, but it also counts anything with an apostrophe like "Captain's" or "don't" as two words.

In light of this, I cannot use that site as an accurate measure. It is unfair to the writers. I apologize for not checking this beforehand. I shall edit the first post to include your second word count tool, which seems more accurate.

Thank you for discovering this and bringing it up, Hempline.
