Robin Hobb's Liveship Trader trilogy is chock full o' pirates, an excellent fantasy series.

The pirate book I always recommend t'new mates is Under The Black Flag by a feller by the piratical moniker o' David Cordingly. (Well, "Captain Cordingly" would have a nice searfarin' ring to it, wouldn't ye agree?)

It does a right proper job o' separating the pirate myths from fact (though perhaps some o' ye don't want that spoiled, eh?) and you will learn a great deal about the daily lives o' privateers, buccaneers, corsairs, and the like. No self-respectin' swabbie should not treat themselves to this fine readin' at least once in their nefarious careers. My copy is 5 years old, dogeared but still much beloved.

I read Under the Black Flag in my original piratey researches, and it's very good, if, as you say, a little 'exposing the myth'.

pirate presentation Reply to this Post

so in my com 310 class - techniques of speaking - we have to do 4 speeches during the term. one persuasive, one self, one explaining, and one factual ( i think thats how it went)

my factual one - exploring the romantacism and mythology of pirates :)

i started out with the first verse of pirates of the carribean on cd

then went thru different myths about origins, ships, weapons, famous pirates, et cetera

and then i brought out my cutlass :-P

fun stuff indeed, and i got an A !

this was last year

the question on everyone's mind was:

why the heck did you do a presentation on pirates?

i wish this site was here so i could have given them number 4 -
EVERYBODY LOVES PIRATES!

Hypocrisy, and a familiar saying... Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

I wanted to chastise the person above me for issuing a one-line post, and then engage in the time-honoured tradition of doing the same.

Hypocrisy, arr.

The line "Pieces of eight, bugger the mate" keeps running through my head in this little pirate voice.

And, just now, I remember this line from a cartoon.
"Arrr, I be a butt pirate!"

Purple Pussy is full of low humor. Very low. You have been warned.

This one too. Yarr...
