DPI Upscaling 200% From 1080 to 4k No Longer Works After Update Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

Hi,

I haven't logged on for a little over a week, and after logging on and updating the game yesterday, I have been unable to upscale my game through Window 10's DPI upscaling from 1080 resolution to 4k.

In the past, I had my Steam version's "javaw" file's properties set to run as Administrator, with the "Disable DPI Scaling" option uncheck (so it would upscale), as well as Compatibility mode set to Windows XP Service Pack 2. With the game client set to 1080 resolution windowed mode, this would allow me to comfortably play at an upscaled 4k client size, with all UI upscaled appropriately.

After the update, however, the client only starts with a blank white screen and seems to freeze. Only by settings "javaw" to disable DPI scaling does it work. I have tried all the compatibility modes (Windows XP, 7, 8, etc.) and without compatibility, yet the problem persists so long as DPI scaling is enabled.

1080 resolution unscaled on my 4k monitor is unplayably small. I saw in the update's notes that the game client's 4k resolution setting had been made to have the UI scale itself, but setting the game client to 4k had the same small UI problems as before the update.

I have tried uninstalled and reinstalling both Java and YPP to no avail.
As it stands now, I can't play the game unless I have DPI scaling unchecked, leading to unbearably small client resolutions or UI.

The goal of this update was for the YPP client to automatically handle the scaling process, so that players don't have to manually fiddle with upscale settings. This is the first case I've heard of since the update where the client window is still too small. Could you tell me what screen resolution your monitor is set to, as well as the resolution that you're running the game at? This can be found in "Ye" -> "Options" -> "General".

Hi Forculus,

I'm running my laptop monitor at 4k resolution (3820x2160); it's set in Windows 10 to run at 200% scaling ("Change the the size of text, apps, and other items: 200%"). Of note is that a 1920x1080 external monitor is hooked up by HDMI, with no scaling set (100%). However, I have tested running the game both with and without DPI scaling, with and without the second monitor hooked up and no difference was made.

The game is set to 1920x1080 (32bit).

In the past, I was able to successfully have Windows 10 upscale using its 200% scaling so that this 1080 resolution would appear at 4k resolution (with properly scaled UI). This upscaling was only able to be done when the javaw file (the one in the Steam -> common -> steamapps installation folder of YPP) was set to Windows XP compability mode version 2; I forget what happened when this compability mode wasn't checked.

If you get a chance, could you send me a copy of your client log after the white screen error occurs? You can find this file in your Puzzle Pirates installation directory, with a name like "yohoho_12345.log". You can send it to me in a private message, or email it to support@puzzlepirates.com, or post it here if it's relatively short. I have an idea for an Options setting that may be helpful in this situation.

Thanks for providing these logs. It looks like there isn't a specific client error message generated in the white screen situation, so perhaps it's purely a display/render issue while the client continues to run like normal.

I've just made an update to the Ice ocean client, adding a new checkbox for "DPI Aware" at the bottom of the "General" options panel. When you have time, could you try checking this box and then restarting the Ice client? This option should allow your upscaling solution to continue working like it used to. Let me know if it fixes the problem, in which case I'll add the option to the main Puzzle Pirates client.

In case you don't have the Ice client installed, it can be downloaded here:

Alright, I have downloaded the Ice client from that link and coinscribed with Doubloons to access Ice.

I have checked the DPI Aware box and have restarted the client with game settings at 1080 resolution; the window itself is 1080 sized and still small on my 4k monitor. Then I changed the game resolution settings to 4k, and restarted. The client window was 4k sized, however the UI in-game remained the same size as when it was set to 1080.

Since the game client window was 1080 resolution when the game settings were set to 1080 resolution, I believe my Windows 10 DPI upscaling at 200% isn't being applied to the window. Normally I would go into the Steam installation folder and find the javaw file (Steam -> steamapps -> common -> Puzzle Pirates -> java_vm -> bin -> javaw) and change it's properties to uncheck the "disable DPI scaling" setting and in the old version I would also enable compatibility mode.

On this Ice client, and when I had previously installed the desktop Non-Steam version, I ran into a problem where the Puzzle Pirates directory does not contain it's own Java files. Judging from the target location of the "Play Puzzle Pirates" shortcut file, it seems to use the javaw stored at ""C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_121\bin\javaw.exe" -jar getdown-dop.jar .".

Changing the properties of this javaw file does not seem to change anything about the client, in fact its default setting is with "Disable DPI scaling" unchecked already, which on my Steam version's javaw would have caused the 1080 client window to be upscaled to 4k through Windows 10's upscaling.

To summarize, I'm not sure which file on this non-Steam version of YPP I'm supposed to meddle with to have Windows 10 apply its upscaling, as the javaw stored in the Puzzle Pirates folder I'm used to on the Steam version is not present in the non-Steam version, and changing the javaw stored in C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_121 does not seem to affect the YPP client.

It's possible that Java 8 (installed on your machine and used by the Ice install) is handling things differently than Java 6 (provided with the Steam client). You can also check in the Options panel of the Ice client to verify that Java 1.8.0_121 is actually being used, or if there's a different version on your machine that's being referenced.

I've gone ahead and added the new checkbox to the main Puzzle Pirates client, so you can try it out there to see if it allows you to upscale your Steam client like you were before. Sorry for the hassle, I'm not sure what prevented the default upscaling from working on your machine.

I checked Ice's client and it is using the 1.8.0_121 Java version.
In comparison, the Steam version is using 1.6.0_25

Thanks for uploading it to the Steam version. I've updated the Steam version and checked the DPI aware setting. A noticeable difference with this box checked is that the client window will no longer upscale through Window 10's 200%, when "disable DPI scaling" is unchecked on the Steam installation's "javaw". It will only upscale when compatibility mode for Windows XP is set, but will display the blank white screen with that compatibility set.

I've also tried running the game client with it's game settings at 4k resolution with the DPI scaling box checked, and with javaw set to disable DPI scaling, but the small UI/puzzles persists.

Well, I've actually tried a number of configurations, listed below:

Of note is that the fullscreen option is disabled, normally I run in windowed mode.

------

I have a laptop with a 4k screen, with Windows 10 set at 200% Display scaling. I have an external monitor hooked up through HDMI with 1080 resolution with Windows 10 set at 100% Display scaling for this second monitor.

I went ahead and temporarily disconnected the 2nd monitor and retested the 50 configuration above - same results.

Despite my huge aversion to Full-screen anything due to the hassle alt-tabbing to check other windows, I enabled the Fullscreen option and tested some configurations out:

The main problem I encountered was that on all configurations tested, the Fullscreen client would be OK for 3-5 seconds then the game screen would turn black. Alt-tabbing in and out would fix this for another 3-5 seconds before it would turn black again.

-------

Game Client: DPI Aware disabled, 1080 resolution, javaw: disable DPI scaling enabled, admin rights

1) no compability: full-screen sized client, UI scaled correctly, black-screen issues

2) Windows 7 compability: full-screen sized client, UI scaled correctly, black-screen issues

3) Windows XP Service Pack 2: full-screen sized client, UI scaled correctly, black-screen issues

I'm not sure what the cause could be, using that new Options checkbox should allow things to work as they did before the update. Perhaps something else changed in your setup during that week of absence? Maybe if some other players using 4k monitors could chime in here, you could try and figure out what's different between their setup and yours that might be responsible. It shouldn't be necessary to use backwards compatibility or changing javaw in this way.

Hmmm,

Well, thanks for trying to resolve this issue, anyways Forculus.

I will keep an eye peeled out if anyone else had this problem and was able to solve it.

I also can't seem to get the dpi settings to work either. I have a 4k monitor with a very small screen (13.3 inch) on my yoga pro. Reading over everything and experimenting I was wondering if maybe it's just that doubling the image size is nowhere near enough since I have such a small screen versus the resolution. I ended up reducing the resolution and playing full screen.

I fixed it on my Surfacebook by navigating to the Steam YPP directory, and going inside the java_vm folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Puzzle Pirates Dark Seas\java_vm\bin)

Find javaw.exe in the list of files there, right click, Properties, Compatibility tab

There's an option "Override high DPI scaling behaviour. Scaling performed by: Application" - tick it and select System. OK and reload game.

I'm not on steam, so for me the location was:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_131\bin

(Yay modifying my system java -_-)

But it worked. And the game was utterly unplayable without that change; I had to have my nose right up to the monitor to read any text at all.
