Limited Edition Portrait Background - Beasts o' the Isles and Seas Edition! [Announcing the winners!] Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

It's portrait time again!

Winners!

Theme:
This month's theme is Beasts o' the Isles and Seas: krakens, sirens, sea dragons, sea devils, sea monsters and other unknown horrors that lurk in the deeps, and loom at the edges of the oceans.... things unexplained and feared by pirates everywhere. Woe betide the sailor that encounters them!

Note that this more focused on the pirate superstitions of sea creatures rather than normal sea life. Make sure the theme includes piracy or maritime activities and environments around these mighty real or imaginary foes. You can use any aspect of these themes as the inspiration for your portrait background.

Submissions:
Entrants will create original backgrounds that are consistent with the theme and style of the game. The image must look sensible with characters placed on it in any of the orientations possible for its size. The preferred file format is .png
Entries must fit the appropriate scale:

1-pirate backgrounds: 348 x 650
2-pirate backgrounds: 696 x 650
Large backgrounds: 1600 x 1170
Expansive backgrounds: 2000 x 1275

Only original art is accepted. You must create the images yourself.
References to copyrighted intellectual properties should be excluded from the entries. We don't want anyone laboring on some amazing art that has to be ignored because of this.
Plagiarized entries, photographs, and other unsuitable entries may be removed from the entry page without notice.
You may use reference materials for your work, but if you base your work substantially on a reference, please acknowledge it in your forum post. You do not need to acknowledge any game art used as reference material.

Upload your images to the YPPedia and name the file according to the naming scheme listed below.

Reworking entries:
To update an entry, please upload the latest version with the same file name as the previous version of the entry. If you want an alternative version rather than a replacement, multiple entries per artist are also acceptable. You can enter multiple times for any theme.

Artists who entered backgrounds in a previous contest:
If the background didn't win, it can be submitted for future contests as long as it fits the theme within each contest. Go ahead and enter past entries if you wish, however, you shouldn't submit crops of past backgrounds that have already had a win and have been seen in game before.

To resubmit an entry, go to the YPPedia page where your image is located (i.e. File:Monthly_yourname_title.png), click "Edit" and add the current contest's tag to the summary. Do not delete the previous tag. If you want to participate with a new version of a past entry, then you can upload the new version instead!
Please note: if YPPedia warns you that you're uploading a duplicated file, it means that the image itself has not changed and you should add the new tag to the previous version instead of uploading a duplicate - it's likely the duplicated file will get deleted! (If in doubt, post in this thread and we will be happy to help)

Instructions for destination filename
The arrtists have requested a specific naming scheme of files uploaded to YPPedia for this contest that may not be the same as the general YPPedia file upload scheme. Note that this is in addition to the requirements for the image tags. You may also post links to the thumbnails here in this thread for comment. Please follow the naming and image tag scheme below carefully.

Requested format for the filenames on YPPedia:
monthly_yourname_title_the_way_you_want_to_appear_in_game.png
All in lower-case. You can add the underscores yourself or simply leave a space between words, in that case, the wiki will automatically add the underscores for you.
So, if I want my portrait background to appear as Clotho's Tangled Threads, I would use:
monthly_clotho_tangled_threads.png

If you are uploading multiple versions of the same background , it's best to give each a different name instead of using 1, 2, 3 at the end to differentiate. For example, if I want to upload 2 different versions of Tangled Threads, instead of using Tangled Threads 1 and Tangled Threads 2, I would use:
monthly_clotho_tangled_threads.png
monthly_clotho_threads_are_tangled.png

Instructions for tags in the summary field
The tag for this contest is "jul14contest" so that we know which entries to consider when judging starts. The summary field for the upload should be:
{{contesttag|accountname|creditname|Portrait Title}}
where
"contesttag" is replaced by this month's tag
"accountname" is replaced by your own forum name
"creditname" is replaced by your pirate name
"Portrait Title" is replaced by your suggested title for the portrait background

e.g. {{jul14contest|Clotho|Spinner|Loom}}
or {{jul14contest|Cassopia|Whitenose|Spindle}}

If the name to credit the portrait with is the same as the account name, it would go in twice.
e.g. {{jul14contest|Clotho|Clotho|Tangled Threads}}

Judging:
Quality of work, style, how well the background fits with the game's theme, and how well the placement of the portrait characters fit into the background are the primary determining factors. The entries will be judged in the Three Rings offices by the arrrtists and the winner will be put into future releases as a Limited Edition portrait background. The portrait background may also be re-used for limited times later, and even (if appropriate) adopted as a longer-term or permanent portrait background, rather than a limited duration one. The same winning artist may be chosen more than once for different entries. Entrants may be asked by the arrrtists to make small changes to their designs after the judging.

Prizes:
The winning entries will be included in the in-game list of available portrait backgrounds for a limited duration. Anyone in the game can use it when it becomes available. In addition to that, each winning entry will receive:
* a Puzzle Pirates real-life item and a pack of playing cards in the mail
* a choice of clothing or furniture item
* a choice of Bluebeard, Fishheadred, Greenbones egg or doll
* a free copy of their portrait in-game
* Dread Masterpiece trophy

The small print:
* Poe and doubloons (where applicable) for the free copy and the trophy (if the winner doesn't already have it) will be delivered at the time the portrait is available in game. These are lovingly hand-delivered, so it can take a few days to track ye down, feel free to send a petition with the title "FAO: Clotho" to let me know approximate times when you'll be in game.
* The clothing or furniture can be any item in any colors that can be ordered from a tailor or a furnisher in game. The following restrictions apply: no limited edition colors, no items that require a design to be created and no items that require a certain reputation to be worn or placed.
* An additional clothing item can be substituted for the real-life prizes if the winner does not feel like having a household full of Puzzle Pirates Paraphernalia.
* The real life prize may not be substituted for an additional furniture item.
* Please note that winners should contact about their prizes via petition instead of PM. Add "FAO:Clotho" to the title to make sure I receive it.

Deadline:
July 15th 2014, 11:59pm game time

Suggestions:
-- Make it look like it came right out of the game.
-- Get your line weights down, and compare with existing portraits to be sure.
-- Keep your lighting consistent with the lighting on the pirate portrait art.
-- Choose a scene that many in the game would like to use.
-- Take your time and rework, going to others for advice and critique.
-- A very small signature in the lower right corner is acceptable.
-- In general avoid words - if you do use them, use them minimally, and only when they are not central to the understanding of the portrait.
-- Pay close attention to your composition - the composition of backgrounds related to pirate placement is a major consideration and sometimes otherwise good backgrounds are eliminated because the nicest elements are blocked by the pirates once they are in frame.

Other suggestions and links:
Questions, discussion, entries and feedback can all be posted here. Good luck!

Oi, I read the theme and my mind went blank. XD I've never really drawn monsters, animals, people (aside from the forum avatar that turned out awkward... and stick figures of course), characters, etc. so it might be a tough one for me. I'll try to think of something, but I'm thinking there's a greater chance of me just watching the progress of other people's art. I can't wait to see the entries this month! :D

You can always work around the 'beast' - they don't actually have to be seen entirely to be scary!

True Clotho! I actually had a small idea that I've been trying to mess around with and I think it kinda fits what you are talking about! (maybe lol) :D Hm.. it's been a challenge! So far, I have the land outlined which is pretty much a horizontal line across a blank canvas and it's been sitting like that for a few days.. XD haha I'd better start scribbling around more! Thanks a lot for that tip!!

Decided to revisit an old one of mine, The Siren's Cove Expansive. It was the last one I did with a mouse and the first time I tried photoshop, it came back with feedback that in order to be a winner I had to "enlarge" the Siren on the rock's head and "shorten" her arms...a monumental and impossible task at the time. So I ended up just deleting her (a matter of hours before my trial expired on Photoshop).
I still really wanted to use her in a future portrait, so I am glad this theme came back :D
I managed to use my new-found skills to do what was asked of me before, though I still feel the background is far from done, thought I;d share what I have so far. :)

I plan to add some more texture/scales to her tail and correct the lighting on it, as well as I am considering changing the color of both her hair slightly and adding more details to it. I added a GF to the background and are working on some line details on the sunken ships. (un?) fortunately most of the rock and siren's body is covered by the ghost.

Any feedback and suggestions are as always welcome :)

It kinda looks like an evil version of Ariel the mermaid... xD
Wouldn't want to encounter this one...
I love it dear! Perhaps some extra hidden skulls.. to make her look more... devious? Since one of them is already hidden behind what the person will hold :(

Just my humble opinion :)
Ps. Is this two different versions? Because her tail looks different. I'd go with the first one..

tehe. the first one is the *updated* version that I've been working on, was too lazy to update the ghost picture too :) I'll see about fitting more skulls in ^_^ or perhaps some floating debris from sunken ships.
I really like the blood red hair, but as you said she looks a bit like ariel...perhaps if I add more *blood* red to it o.O
Something to consider anyways :D
Thanks for the feedback :D

Ok, no idea what I am doing wrong, guess it's been a LONG time since I entered these contests, but for some reason when I try to upload the file it has a error message that says:
"File extension does not match MIME type."

Destination Filename: monthly_pixelpixie_sirens_call.png
my tag: {{jul14contest|booful|pixelpixie|Sirens Call}}

Not sure what I am doing wrong but if anyone could please help me I'd appreciate it :)

Anyways still trying to figure out what to put in the left bottom corner...

Whenever I got that error it usually meant that the file name on my computer was a .JPG but the file name I was uploading it to on YPPedia was a .PNG. Or similar.

Just mismatching file extensions all over the place.

All is good Pixelpixie. Don't think you did anything wrong, just that the Jul14contest page was not yet linked to the Portrait entries. It's fixed now. :)

I thought I was doing well, but I am again sitting in front of this bg doing nothing, just staring at it. >< I've decided to try a giant black squid. Only the base colors added so far, so no textures, lighting, or shading yet, but just curious if anything needs to be fixed or looks weird from other folk's perspectives. (: I know for me, some of the colors already seems to be off, so I'll have to go fix that, but anything else that you guys think I should fix or change please feel free to let me know! :D I would appreciate it tons!

Here are some of the things I'm wondering about...
Should I use brighter colors for the sea plants?
What color should the clam be?
Should I try redrawing the sea plants?
Should I give the whole bg a tiny bluish tint to it at the end to give it a more underwater effect?
Is the bg too busy with the pirate in it? >< (I'm kind of hoping it won't look too busy after it's all finished but who knows lol)

Thank you!!!

Hey Joon,

So far the background looks great! One thing that might REALLY make it look good is if you made the wood on the ship kinda like the picture link below:

http://www.hrwallpaper.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/brown-wood-texture-background.jpg

Another thing is the sand. Though we will only see part of it in the actual portrait, it would like really cool if you did it like the image below (texture-wise):

https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS6nzV8bCm5k-SakbpDyE_9BQzuS53xxy84JaVBFBYhakfZQKcZUA

or....like this:

http://hdwallbangun.com/downloadwall/waves-sand-wallpaper-android.html

Hope this helps! Good luck on your background, mate! :D

Thanks a lot for the kind words & sample texture images, Kxz! I hope what I can draw will be presentable like those! They look great and I think adding those kinds of textures into the bg would make it look much better too! :D

Thank you, Kxz!!

I chatted with a hearty of mine and didn't notice the size comparison between the pirate and the "giant" squid/ship until after I had posted it on the forum lol. Do you guys think that I should fade the ship and the squid a little bit in the water to make them appear further away? I didn't take that into account when drawing any of my backgrounds before unfortunately gahh I'm still learning new things everyday heh~ ><

Your other option, if you don't want to try to make the ship look further away, is to turn it into a smaller rowboat type vessel instead of a ship.

I'd personally nix the small chest on the left side and instead give a more close-up view of a truly gigantic (to the pirate) tentacle arm.

Mock up example:

Thanks a lot for that suggestion, Chocorose!! ^^ That would have been a fantastic idea! I want to keep the squid giant and if it were comparable to a smaller vessel, that would probably make it a baby giant squid. XD

Cattrin, I wish I can just enter in your mock ups, they always look great and that is a good idea! :o I hope you don't mind if I try following along with your suggestion closely. I doubt it's going to look better than the mock up you did. XD Thank you!!

Great backgrounds so far!

So I made a sea serpent, almost done but I'm stuck on the head.
Not sure how I should finish it. Any ideas/thoughts? (not just about the head)
Would be awesome <3

Any ideas/thoughts?

*o* It looks amazing, Rechivas! In my head I'm wondering how it would look if the water texture at the surface was a tiny touch smoother or blended in more... but feel free to disregard my thoughts if it was intentionally done that way (I probably don't know what I'm talking about half of the time haha)! My first thought on it was "wow!" :D

I reread my post and it might have been confusing. >< Please keep the texture! XD It looks great, I was thinking about keeping the texture clear and strong (not exactly blending it all in together), but just softening the sharp edges I think... bah I'm no good with critiquing haha, but I know it'll turn out great so I'm content already. :D

Mmm... I think I will need your guys' suggestions again. ^^ Here is a small update to mine... (sorry Cattrin, I couldn't keep up with your drawing talent XD but I tried my best! Feel free to let me know if you'd change anything on it!) The tentacle at the front hasn't gotten any shadow or lighting yet, just base color, so I'll add that soon...

So the lighting for the giant squid and the ship is sort of in this direction...

while the lighting for the pirate seems to be a bit more from this direction...

So.. I'm wondering if it's ok since the squid and the ship is towards the back away from the pirate or should I just change all the lighting so that everything is the same as the pirate? I have decided to try changing the lighting to the northwest side of the portrait to fit the pirate more. Also I'm thinking something is a bit off balance when the pirate is added... perhaps I should show more sand at the bottom? Thanks a bunch in advance! ^^

Alright, I'm still not so sure on this because the colors seem to be too muddy or murky to me, but let me know if you think it's fine or if you think it needs to be changed, I would appreciate it very much!

Here is my sketch, progress, and somewhat maybe final...

I also tried seeing how it would look if the background was moved up a bit to show more sand at the bottom... what do you think? :o

ORIGINAL MOVED UP

Is it too busy?

Hm, feel free to let me know what you guys think. I'm almost thinking that moving the bg up a little shows more of the squid's tentacles, clam, and ship. It also seems to balance the cropped area with the pirate in it for me a tiny bit more with the extra sand at the bottom... but I'm not exactly sure yet.

Should I change anything?

EDIT: After chatting with a hearty of mine, I formed a possible list of things to experiment with...

- Darker Ship
- Stronger Light Rays
- More Contrast

Any other suggestions or thoughts would be great! Thank you!!

I like the original better I think.

One thing you might want to consider doing is entering that one, which already looks great, but then maybe another one with more water depth?

Even the most crystal clear water starts turning everything blue (including shadows and highlights) once you get far enough away. To give the squid more of a large look, this might help. In the mock-up I also put more heavy-cast dark blue shadows on most things.

The light blue highlights (sloppy third picture) are optional, if the squid is far from the surface, the light would be filtered out already.

Cattrinnnnn!!! >< Thank you so much for that, it was an incredible suggestion and I immediately tried to do my best to follow your mock up because they are always the best. XD I am glad you prefer the original!! I will not have to go through the hassle of moving the bg up and drawing in more sand at the bottom. Thank you for the stock images as well! I now feel that the bg without water depth feels unfinished so I don't know if I will even try entering that one in (felt that it was too busy with the pirate maybe because the variety of colors pop too much? Your suggestion to add water depth solved that issue for me!), but here is the result... I hope it's not TOO blue haha I did go a little crazy with it >< and I did attempt to follow the 3rd pic in your mock up just because it looks amazing and I feel it adds more underwater effect to the bg :D Thank you once again!!!

If I missed something or still need to change anything, please let me know! ^^ Due date is fast approaching! xD *panic*
