Ocean population and OOO's ISP problems Reply to this Post

So, the connection problems started just before Labor Day (US) on 2013-09-02. Here is how the ocean's island populations have fared since then. The first column of numbers is the population this morning, the second is the population on 2013-09-02.
(wayne@legbone) $ ./island_pop_stats -odate 2013-09-02 -ocean emerald

Of course, the connection problems *may* have had absolutely nothing to do with the loss in population, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Some of the drop can probably be attributed to accounts going dormant after the log into your account and win a familiar thingy was on. Also possibly back to school in the US? I don't know when that actually was, so ignore me if I'm wrong.

Edit: Someone who stopped logging in the day the connection went bad would still be active, not dormant.... or am I imagining things? It hasn't been 10 days since then.

The last time I would consider myself as being "active" was on the 6th (moving comods, keeping up with shop). My activity was "spotty" before then due to the disconnects and not wanting to lose anything to server issues.

It is a big pain to even try and get on right now and I won't really play or update labor until this is fixed.

I actually went and found another game to play while this one is down...and PAID this other game for a few features.

It would have been wonderful if I could have spent my time on YPP and PAID them, but alas....lost motivation due to rampant d/c. I'm tired of trying.

I keep checking here for a new Announcement that things are back up and running. I'll keep checking, FB and Twitter.

Until they get this fix, my time will go to this other game....its not even that good so I hope OOO fixes this soon. The longer I am out, the less motivation I have.

OOO is losing a lot of NEW players. Who wants to play a booched game???

Here is to the hope they will get it together! C'mon YPP :)

First, I should have mentioned that these numbers are the sum of all populations on all of the islands and the island population is the number of "active" players who have their home on that island. OOO defines "active" very loosely. If you log in for just one second every ten days, you are considered active. Even if you immediately disconnect, or never do any puzzle, you are still active.

Some of the drop can probably be attributed to accounts going dormant after the log into your account and win a familiar thingy was on. Also possibly back to school in the US? I don't know when that actually was, so ignore me if I'm wrong.

Good point, I thought the familiar for just logging in had finished longer ago than it had, but it ended on 2013-08-26. You are also right that people who stopped logging on immediately after there was the first sign of problems wouldn't be dormant yet, but lots of people don't even try to log in every day, and if they can't log in at all a few times, would have gone dormant.

Here is the day-by-day population levels for emerald. Notice that on 2013-08-23, the day after the familiar give-away started, there was a jump, and all through the give-away there were increases. However, those increases are not as large as the decreases since YPP had connection problems. Dice the data up any way you want...

Some of these numbers could have happened because the /gift function is broken, so many alt accounts could not be used because they cannot be resubbed.

I'd like to see these numbers again, after the game has functioned "normally" for 10 days, and see where they stand in comparison to 8-21

*bump*

I'm just going to list the total island populations for each ocean by date, I don't think the arch/island breakdown is important. Remember, this is a count of all pirates that have logged in for even one second in the previous 10 days, which is a very low bar to being "active."

The population definitely went up during the familiar give-away, but it dropped even more during the connection problems. All said and done, the ocean populations are down noticeably since 2013-08-22. Some of this is due to the normal end-of-summer/school-starting drop that happens every year. Also, pirates who used to log in every day, but then stop playing will take 10 days to become inactive, but a lot of pirates don't play every day and so will become inactive sooner.

Key dates:
2013-08-22 "just log in and you might get a familiar" event started
2013-08-26 familiar give-away ended
2013-09-02 about when the connection problems started
2013-09-12 about when the connection problems ended
2013-09-16 release with more swabbies

The population stats were collected about 3AM pirate on the date given, so the affects of various things lag by a day. The numbers are the population of that day vs the previous day.

In relation to emerald, Pukru went from over 100 people to 40, the lowest ive seen it in 6 years. I don't think that many alts lived on puk, considering the population has been around that ever since i started playing. I also don't think kiddos going back to school would make us lose 60-80 people in the blink of an eye. Pretty ignorant of 3 rings to delete that much people, but hey we all realise by this point they don't give a crap so none of this really matters.

I do not follow what happens on Emerald, and I don't have a huge amount of data, but the island population of Pukru has been varying between 50-70 most days since 2013-08-05. I see no sudden drops or surges in population there, certainly nothing close to 100, and it was only down to 44 one day. The island population *will* vary a little bit over the day, so it may well have been different when you looked at than when I collected my stats.
