Why do you play? Reply to this Post

I've been playing Puzzle Pirates for the last week as part of a game design class, and now I've got to conduct a survey/interview about why the community loves the game. You are all cool fellows, so why not take a minute to help a player, and feel free to indulge in some geeking out! :)

How much do you play? What motivates you to play? Why were you attracted to Puzzle Pirates? Do you know other players?

Feel free to answer one or all or tangentially any of the questions. Thank you!

1) It's different. I work with arcade games professionally, so I'm burnt out on action/hair-trigger games.
2) You can play for free... for real. It's not like most "freemium" games, where it's free, unless you actually want to do stuff, or worse, is a player vs player game where the person who pays the most money wins.
2A) And it's not the game where the person with the best latency/newest computer wins, either.
3) There's a respectable amount of hidden depth to it-- and it's hidden different depth. Not something you would expect when the avatars are noseless, I'm sure, but the ability to run shops, trade, and things like that provide value when you're burnt out on the main game.
4) Who can't love a game that lets you put snakes, monkeys, octopi, and toucans on your shoulder?

I would agree with most of the things that the above poster said.

I would probably highlight reason number 2 as my main reason. The fact that I have played over 8 years and not spent a cent on the game(yes I know I should but haven't for various reasons) and have been able to access all contents of the game. Most of games have "Free" versions but they are severely restricted in content.

And probably the second reason is that skill is not directly correlated with time played. Most games have "levels" or "experience" where as you spend more time on the game to improve your level, you can access more content. In Puzzle Pirates, if you are able to pick up the puzzle quickly, you are able to access the content related to that skill right away.

1. I used to play several hours each day, now at most 2-3 hours a week.
2. getting Ultimates and just improving my stats in general
3. I met some really helpful and friendly people when I started. Also, it came with my computer.
4. Not in real life

How much do you play?
- I am mostly online from 12pm - 10pm GMT

What motivates you to play?
- This game has many factors to it. Pirates can pillage, SMH, stall running, merchanting (inn merching and trade merching), politics, etc. I personally play this game for the politics, crafting puzzles, social aspect, and merching.

Why were you attracted to Puzzle Pirates?
- I honestly can't remember what first attracted me to play this game. I started playing in 2006, played for a few months, and then quit. I then started back up in 2010 and have been playing since.

Do you know other players?
- Do I know players IRL? Yes I know 1 or 2 friends who play occasionally.

How much do you play?

- 3 hours a day or so; holidays right now so 10 hours a day I guess.

What motivates you to play?

- For every multiplayer game, I get hooked in by the gameplay. It's also very deep and I love the politics. But in the end, it's the social aspect of running a crew [I love running clans] that drives me.

Why were you attracted to Puzzle Pirates?

Don't remember; I played in 2008-2009, um, quit the game for some reason. I was looking for an MMO, remembered this, and I got hooked into it.

Do you know other players?

From other sites that I ref'd them here? Yes, 1.
IRL? Nope.

How much do you play? Min 4 hours max on cade weekends 9 hours a day.

What motivates you to play? I love puzzles and saving for familiars. Been doing it for over 6 years now.

Why were you attracted to Puzzle Pirates? Puzzles aren't to easy or to hard just right for most people. Always something new each month. Runs nice and smoothly on a laptop unlike other games which I cant play 99% of the time.

Do you know other players? I know a few not much but there's also meet ups.

How much do you play?
I play around 2-3 hours a day, maybe more if there is something going on.

What motivates you to play?
Over time this has changed and grown into many reasons. I first played because I really liked the puzzles and how each one contributed to the game play, then I met people and joined a crew. Now I have come into other aspects of the game such as merchanting.

Why were you attracted to Puzzle Pirates?
I went to best buy specifically looking for a PIRATE game that would play on my MAC. It was the pirate part that got me. I later found out after buying the game, it was online and with REAL people.

Do you know other players?
I only know other players thru the game itself. I have met some wonderful people and I do consider them now to be RL friends. Even though I have never met them face to face, I keep up on Facebook and e-mail and it's just like having met them outside the game.

Another one of these? Someone else did a similar survey a couple of years ago; if you can beat the search into submission you might be able to find it.

I used to play a lot but I'm on maybe an hour a day on average now, and a lot of that isn't really playing much.

I used to be motivated to play by the puzzles and the excitement of voyages. Nowadays it's more about socialising.

I was attracted to YPP by the skill based aspect, and by it being genuinely free to play. I was linked to it by a friend from an online community, but that's why I stayed.

I've met a few people at a Delft meetup IRL, and one pirate who lives near me. I'd say I somewhat know some others just from in game.

How much do you play?
Varies, currently probably a couple of hours a week. Before the merge it would have been around 3 hours at a time most days.

What motivates you to play?
The combination of puzzles, social, and forum event/artistic community. Currently, the ocean merge made my usual activity unplayable, and the player that kept me around quit, so am mainly around for forum events. Also, Apollo's awesomeness is absolute: he clearly has fun playing, interacting with people and running events, his enthusiasm is palpable (and catching). It's a shame there isn't more interaction between OMs/ringers and players though, and sometimes OOO in general seems to neglect tying up loose ends. I think both would benefit both the community and player retention.

Why were you attracted to Puzzle Pirates?
Initially the puzzles. So many to master! The shiny there has worn off though and the social aspect is what kept me.

Do you know other players?
My sister introduced me and I meet up with 3 other ex-players occasionally.

Ah, yes, I should have had the "no grind" philosophy on my list, as well. That's a very important part of why I'm here.

Play for ~0 hours a week at this point.

I stumbled upon the game probably 6 or 7 years ago and it was the first MMO I played. So the concept of real-time player to player interaction was a novel one for me. The kindness and intelligence of my fellow players as well as the puzzles kept me playing for a while.

The game has a surprising amount of depth if you try to get into it. After coming back to lurk the forums, I'm tempted to find some spare time to log back on if only to say hello to what hearties of mine still play.

Best of luck with your class,

1) How much do you play? several hours a day nearly every day for 9 years. It's easier now that I am retired.

2) What motivates you to play? The puzzles, getting better at them or moving up on the experience charts.

3) Why were you attracted to Puzzle Pirates? The puzzles. Despite this being a MMO game, I largely treat it as a place to play nice puzzles and play the game as pretty much an individual. I definitely have close friends in game, but for me the game is all about puzzles. Ship and shoppe puzzles all interest me. I do not go for the "Inn"puzzles.

4) Do you know other players? I have met a few in real life. Some, who no longer play remain very good friends and we stay in touch via Google hangout, Skype and/or Facebook.

How much do you play? - 12-15 hours a week maybe, mostly on the weekends. Sometimes nightly. Depends on my schedule.

What motivates you to play? - I enjoy the puzzles and interacting with my friends in the flag, and I'm a blockade addict. I enjoy merchanting a lot, too.

Why were you attracted to Puzzle Pirates? - I really liked the idea of an MMO with puzzles, and I like pirates, so I gave it a try, and got addicted to Bilge and Carp.

Do you know other players? - I've been playing for 7 1/2 years, so yes, I know a lot of players. Have a close group of friends in my flag, plus some hearties I interact with regularly. My closest in-game friends have become my out-of-game friends as well. I also interact with a group of players only on the forums through Rogue OM Squad games.

How much do I play? More than I should admit to.

What motivates you to play? When I first started it was the puzzles, I stay for the people.

What attracted me to YPP? The puzzles I think, it was in 2004 that I started. So something easy to do while late night feeding my son.

Do you know other players? Yeah a few, have met up with a few, spoken on the phone with some others

How much do you play?
Right now, maybe an hour every other day. It's exam time. When it's not exam time, probably 5-8 hours a day, although that's mostly just being online; I'm not actually doing anything.

What motivates you to play?
The people.

Why were you attracted to Puzzle Pirates?
Honestly, I started playing ypp because my best friend IRL was banned from the game we used to play and decided to try this one. About five of us started out together and he and I are the only one who kept it up. I don't know if he still plays, we don't talk much now.

I enjoyed the game enough to stay because of the social aspect, and the lack of grinding. I hate playing games where the people who win are the ones who spend the most time and money on the game. I like being good because I'm actually good.

Do you know other players?
The RL friends I started with no longer play, so not really. But I have a few friends from ypp I've met in RL and a few others I'd meet if I had the finances, and consider to be very good friends.

How much do you play? Often! I have characters on three oceans, depending on time zone I am active on most at least weekly. I usually check ocean status prior to logging in, to see which are most active or down for maintenance, as I play at different times of day and my evening is not the same as most other players who are in the northern hemisphere.

What motivates you to play? Fun, challenges of bettering my ratings on several aspects of puzzling, friendship and the chance to relax in an anonymous environment.

Why were you attracted to Puzzle Pirates? Scope and variety of the different puzzles.

Do you know other players? Not in rl but definitely have in game friendships. Hearties and crewmates rate highly.

What motivates you to play?
At first it was exploration of things to do and new things to do and then it became a place to hang out with friends.

Why were you attracted to Puzzle Pirates?
Player run economy, fairly rare in games.
Got lucky with a great crew and I've been in that crew the whole time.

Do you know other players?
Yes, I've introduced some players to the game and my wife plays and our crew/flag has had some RL meet ups.

How much do you play?

I play 2-3 hours per day; more on weekends if there is a lot of blockade action.

What motivates you to play?

Many different ways of having fun! Pillaging, operating my apothecary, moving goods, attacking flotillas, Atlantis, CI and even Haunted Seas, all the carousing puzzles and undead frays too! The social aspects of the game are fun to, well most of the time.

Why were you attracted to Puzzle Pirates?

It was recommended to me by a friend, and I found several puzzles (like battle navigation) I was particularly good at and enjoyed playing.

Do you know other players?

I have only met two players in real life, but I've spoken with many on Skype or Teamspeak.
