![]() What are we doing? Having a Weird Word Weekend contest. How do we play? By writing a very short story Why do we do this? Because you know it makes sense. And yes, resistance is futile. When do I have to do this? Before the end of Monday 15th October. For reasons I won't go into right now, this is a shorter contest than the last two - note the Monday deadline instead of Friday! This week I would like you to write a very short story for me. The inspiration may become obvious when I share the following criteria that your story MUST meet: * The story must be exactly 42 words long * (You may, in addition, have a title of up to 7 words in length) * You must include either a towel, a sperm whale, or a cricket ball in your story * Your story must include some kind of travel * There should be some kind of twist at the end of the story * There is no fixed theme - it's free choice other than the stated criteria * I will be reading the stories wearing pyjamas and a dressing gown. This does not affect your entry. I just wanted you to know. The challenge here is to deal with all the varied requirements, and still create a well-written story that reads naturally, and feels complete as a short episode. The dazzling prizes * Items that reflect your story! * Apollo Eggs! * Maybe even a doll! * Ships with yellow paint! * Ships with sunny names! * Yellow things! * Yellow stuff! * Bright shiny objects! * Shiny Sun Points! As I did last time, I'm keeping prizes flexible, depending on the quantity and quality of entries. However, they're likely to be full of sunshiney goodness! The details * The deadline is 11:59pm pirate time on Monday 15th October 2012. * One entry per person. * Post your pirate name and ocean, then your title and your story in plain text. * READ ME Because there may be question or comment posts longer than actual entries, please indicate that it's an entry by including one shiny sun icon - at the top of your post include this link: [img ]http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/images/2/25/ShinySun.png[/img] - here I have deliberately broken it by adding a space to the first image tag - remove it and it'll work. Preview if you're not sure it has! * I will be counting words by hand. I will count hyphenated words (if they're REAL) as one word. I will not count dashes - like the ones either side of this phrase - as words (some Word Counters do!) * Remember to check that you've met all criteria! * This thread should be used for questions or comments, as well as for entries. :) Don't panic! ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 4 times, last edit by Apollo at Oct 20, 2012 3:11:17 PM] |

![]() imp, Meridian. Hey, so... what are you wearing underneath? His body gave one last spasm and he sighed in relief, rolling sideways. "Sorry. I just couldn't hold on." "It's froody," she smiled, towelling herself off as she walked over to a small red ball. "Looks like this was blocking your blowhole." Edit: Yeah., rules. I HAVE ALL THE RULES. :) Edit 2: except that one. Thank you, Budclare. 3+: Stuff. ---------------------------------------- Imp of Meridian. This needs to be in bold, flashing text. With sirens attached. O_O Because it's the kind of thing that someone posting at the absolute last minute is likely to forget...not that we know anyone like that. ---------------------------------------- Budclare on Meridian I want a cookie. Tasjatjuh, Cerulean. Apollo travels to Dreamland Apollo suddenly found himself hugging a white cone shapped object, wearing just a yellow towell. As the area felt damp, that made sense. 'Bathr..'' But before he could finish his thought, he was flushed outside through the sperm-whale's blowhole and woke up. xD i felt inspired [URL/][IMG]http://imageshack.us/a/img442/206/058tt.jpg[/IMG][/URL] ---------------------------------------- Tasjatjuh on Cerulean Someone once asked me, 'Why do you always insist on taking the hard road?' Word counting: "dog's toy" is two words. "flea-bitten dog" is two words. "oh freddled-gruntbuggly" is an invalid hyphen, so that would be three words To reassure people - I won't disqualify an entry if it's missing the shiny sun - I'm just concerned that I might completely miss an entry! I'm fairly sure I can pick them all out of the thread, but I thought that the sun icon would help me navigate when it gets to judging time! <3 ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Apollo at Oct 13, 2012 3:46:58 AM] |

![]() Cattrin on Cerulean [This song came to mind, so somewhat inspired by] - Weary (Sperm) Whaling Grounds The ship had chased her for days. "Thar she blows!" The lookout bellowed. She surfaced with a grand plume, glint of malice in her eye. Then- "Tea?" It sat on her tongue, a lovely set. Dazed, the mates could only accept. - Question- so to avoid clutter: Is it alright to indirectly mention travel, and indirectly mention the whale? Like, if I don't actually use the words "traveled to" or "sperm whale" in my story, does that make it unqualified, even though I did have both? ---------------------------------------- Cattrin of Avatar by Apollo, Wiske, Shawe, Blakbead, Daeva, Bunnylaroo and Musicologist!

Plunderville, Cerulean The Miniature Chamber Ensemble Was Very Expensive An elegant gown, all taffeta and grace - his specialty. But half an inch tall? Curious, the tailor set out to deliver it personally. The address was an open field, and the recipient had... six legs? Travel: indirect or implied travel is fine (e.g. your ship chasing for days is clearly travel). Sperm whale: this one's more tricky. I do say in the rules that the story must include one of those things, but I don't specify that the exact word must be used. I think that as long as the item is clearly referenced, it'll be ok. |

Herowena of Cerulean ![]() Two pirates, exhausted by three days of walking, stopped to wipe their sweaty faces with a grubby towel. "Are we there yet?" Herowena whined. Bunnylaroo, Emerald ![]() You Spin Me Right 'Round, Baby... The journey had been terrifying: inky darkness; heat, mounting to unbearable levels; a sensation of spiraling uncontrollably. A buzzer sounded; the movement slowed; light filled the void. An unknown voice from beyond cried out: "Nothing beats a towel fresh from the dryer!" ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Edit: Why yes, it did take me two hours to think of a title. ![]() Tothemoonn of the Emerald Ocean here; enjoy! =) _________________________________________________ Apollo's New Clothes Apollo's magic towel worked at his vocal command: useful for bathing ("dry me") and for flying ("fly me"). Soaring over the sparkling spires of Scrimshaw, he seemed sublime. But what did the laughing crowds gathering beneath him mean? Alas; Apollo had misspoken. _________________________________________________ explanation (just in case) - highlight below the magic towel functions as both a magic carpet which flies and an enhanced bathing towel. Apollo says the wrong thing after a bath and ends up flying nude! thanks for reading, hope you liked it! the title is a reference to the short story "the emperor's new clothes". ---------------------------------------- Tothemoonn of the Emerald Ocean Artistic rendition of my face and upper body by the superbly skilled Xioch! ---------------------------------------- [Edit 6 times, last edit by thylawrence2 at Oct 14, 2012 10:30:46 PM] |

You may use rhyme if you wish, but please don't let it detract from the flow of the story - rhyming won't gain you any marks, but if the readability is stilted, that could lose you marks! |
