With my own Little Nemo being born amidst this crazy adventure that is Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates, and a call for me to bring back the old Art Forum, I thought the most fitting theme would commemorate the occasion. A pirate's ABCs. For those who haven't participated in an Art Forum before, here's the way it works. Unlike the contests, these aren't for fame or prizes. The Art Forums are all about improving yourself and learning from and with your peers. I set up a theme for all of us, and we all post our works in progress as we go along. We critique each others' work at each stage so that we can all arrive at great finals. The two differences in this Art Forum is that the theme has us each claiming a letter of the alphabet, and all working in the same dimensions. When all is done, I hope to make nice printouts of them and bind them together as a memento, and anyone else can do the same. So, the process, if you would like to join in:

It's a dangerous balancing game here. I want this to be fun, but Steve, Xeph, can we keep this from going full-on Shore Leave? And, yes, Thus, it must be 2D. How could I print knitting? ---------------------------------------- -Avatar by AlexisAngel- |

Don't pull that, Steve. Anyone of any skill level is more than welcome to join us. I like your pictures, and would love for you to actually play along. But X is certainly not for Shippopotamus (though S could be), your image isn't the right dimensions, and you haven't posted a sketch so that we can talk about how to improve your piece before you finish it. ---------------------------------------- -Avatar by AlexisAngel- |

All right, here is my very rough sketch. I am having difficulties with proportions. I am hoping to get a better Bronwynne when I take a profile photo of her when she wakes from her nap. My bilge pump is also way off. How big should I be imagining it to be? Any suggestions on how to better proportion my sketch would be greatly appreciated. P.S. Is there anyway to thumbnail my image larger without actually resizing it and loading the smaller size to imageshack? ---------------------------------------- Dragonlilly, Captain of SDTC A very much retired old sea salt! Apologies if this is too big, but it's around 400x400 pixels. ![]() This is my first rough sketch for the parrots. I'm trying to work out the composition, which is usually what I have most trouble with. I don't know whether to have a close-up like this, or to pull out and show the whole of the treasure chest. Also, should I leave a white background, or fill it in? *Will comment on other pics when my brain is on* |

Don't all of these pictures have to be 2400x2400, and the thumbnails 400x400? Well anyway, here's a rough sketch of the Mythical Boots of Bilging +5. This is just to get down what they might look like, but I plan on using lineless paper with no smudge marks for the real thing. Criticism: Dragonlily - Baby Benjamin, to me, doesn't really look like a baby. Maybe you should give him some clothes, whatever facial features you would normally see with him facing that direction, slightly bigger arms, a shape more like Bronwynne has in the picture, and more than one digit for each hand. Of course, ignore this if he's not supposed to be a human baby. As for Bronwynne, her head looks a little slanted to the right. Otherwise, she looks fine to me. I don't know the exact size of a bilge pump, but most pirates I've seen have to stand up to use one. Maybe it's a toy bilge pump. EDIT: This is your choice, but maybe Bronwynne should at least be facing Benjamin, if not outright showing him proper bilging technique. Otherwise, it doesn't look like she's actually tutoring him. Fchicken - I don't really see much wrong with this sketch, but there are a couple of things. The top parrot's bottom beak-part looks like an unconnected shape, but I'm not quite sure. Also, either close off the bottom of the treasure box, draw some land there, and/or make those vertical lines at the bottom of the treasure chest go past the bottom of the paper. I think you should keep the view like this, but it's up to you. Whether to draw a background is also up to you. These are just my suggestions for the pictures. Feel free to ignore them if you wish. ---------------------------------------- Zyborg - Avatar done by Kingpriam. Those are helpful critiques, thanks, mate. Everyone, thanks for starting up, and welcome aboard! Dragonlilly Ben is looking pretty good, but you may want to flip him so that he's actually sort of watching Bronwynne. In fact, you may want to just use a more useful picture of Bronwynne for Ben's reference and just Ben-ify it. I'm sure Bronwynne will look less alien-y when you get some reference. One of the real concerns is where they are. This is why I suggested a different shot of Ben. His image is from sort of above, while your Bronwynne is from the side, and either against the wall or perched on a ledge. Get a good idea of your background before you finish off the poses. fchicken A very good start. Everything is looking nice together and feels very dimensional so far. You definitely want to either comeplete the bottom of the chest and make it a vignette or give the piece a border and a background and crop the chest. The composition is fine, but a little unexciting. Depending on your thoughts for the type, a third parrot with his wings extended would liven up the upper left. You'll also want more treasure piling up to not only just be more exciting, but also to bring interest to the boring inside of the lid and sides of the chest. Zyborg Those boots are certainly wacky, but I assume that's not the final plan. What's going to make it more interesting? If it's just a vignette of the boots, what will accompany them (water, bilge pump, buckets, crabs), or what details (sole, buckles, laces, seams) could make them more interesting. These are great starts. I'm very excited to see where they go! ---------------------------------------- -Avatar by AlexisAngel- |

While I'm considering which letter to claim, I drew a quick sketch of my first thought. A is for Arrr! ![]() Yes, he only has 3 fingers. o_O I thought he was cute, though. It's probably a good thing "A" is already taken. ;) Hmm. Should the phrases (and pictures) be just piratey, or Puzzle Piratey? |

Actually, I do plan on drawing a background of bilge pieces to accompany the boots. If anyone has any better ideas, please feel free to share. As for the boots themselves, I'll think of something for them. Of course, I'll accept ideas for that as well. ---------------------------------------- Zyborg - Avatar done by Kingpriam.
