None of this would be a problem if people would just implement RFC 3514. It may cause some problems for certain governments and corporations, but I don't see that as a downside.

You too are a big fat liar. Wikipedia isn't down.

Edit: Oops. Wikipedia kinda still is down. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sopa works though. If you have NoScript, you can prevent the block for other pages.

Everyone thought it was dead in the water on tuesday, then they came out yesterday and said that it was gonna be debated in febuary instead. This is just a bad idea and it needs to go away, the future of the internet should not be debated by a group of people who's average age is in the high 50's (no offense to anyone in that age range). It also seems to me that SOPA is intentionally a bit radical so that it shines PIPA in a better light (PIPA also needs to die). Fortunately our mighty SEGA overlords are on the case and know exactly what to do.... Perform a Hard Reset

For those of you with smartphones - there are a number of apps out there that will let you easily follow this stuff as it moves through Congress. I have one from the Android market called "Congress". It has options for focusing on issues by Senator/Representative or by bill. Great if you are interested in the official record. You can also read the text or summary of these bills, since it's all public record.
(available without an app, of course, it's just a handy tool.)

After our internet protest, the Feds have shut down Megaupload. If you needed more proof that SOPA/PIPA are more about censorship and regulatory capture than combating piracy, here ya go.

I think taking down justice.gov websites is pretty dangerous if they wanna keep up what they're doing, but I'll support taking down Universal. Good on them.

Honestly, the US is so behind the times on shit like this that I'm sure Anon acts with virtual impunity for the sorts of things they do.

And it's tempting to think that the action against Mega is like, retaliation for the SOPA/PIPA protests and junk but an investigation like that takes months if not years, so it's only coincidentally related.

Sure. Or sharing a save file for a rotating Let's Play. Or for sending a photo album to someone who needs the RAW files. Or whatever.

You're probably right. But they're still following through with it and finishing the investigation on the day after the protest. It's not entirely out of the ordinary to assume this was a massive intimidation power play to do this today.

I'd say being able to upload any file on your computer is legitimate usage. But I'll admit that there are many instances of pirated goods on megaupload.

Yes.

Old news, this might be surprising If they hasn't already done it about a month before this, then they posted a song in support of megaupload (was a pretty big thing, admiteddly not my kinda music but kayne west and will.i.am got involved), and UMG got it removed despite the fact they had no grounds too (althought its back on youtube now), I cant help but feel there are much worse sites out there and megaupload is just targeted as its high profile.

EDIT: And its not about combating piracy, have you read the bill its worded something like you are in the wrong if you "enable or facilitate piracy", thats a pretty loose term right there, surely by having your computer you "enable piracy".

There are other "files" on these "computer" things we have that might need to be "shared" other than "porn."

You could somehow bypass the waiting period, apparently, but I never did. He would have wanted it that way.

Okay but seriously now, was there a way for copyright owners to request a video or file to be removed from Megaupload? YouTube has tons of copyrighted content go up, and they have a process for making sure that they get taken down when requested. I don't know if Megaupload even made an attempt to establish anything like that.

I do agree that SOPA and PIPA are ridiculous steps in a very dangerous direction, but it doesn't help anybody's case when you have a hugely popular website that isn't doing a thing to prevent its very obvious and open illegitimate uses.

Very rarely have I seen Megaupload used for legitimate purposes. I would agree that Megaupload seems very lax about taking down infringing content though. I guess dropbox might get a nice boost in users from legitimate users transferring over?

I read that apparently megaupload has denied copyright holders of $500m upwards in sales. I don't understand how they can come up with these figures, do they just look at the amount of users the website has and pluck a figure out of the air that seems reasonable? Personally the majority of the stuff I watch on the internet I would be unlikely to ever buy in the first place, though some stuff does surpass expectations. (Bought battlestar galactica boxset after watching through it online, good show :D )
Not that I'm saying that this is representative of everyone who watches things online but it does seem that they choose random numbers, or massively overstated numbers. For example when people are sued for piracy. I've seen multiple cases where someone has been sued (or someone attempted to sue them) for ridiculous sums of money. Downloading a $20 film =|= $x000 in damages unless the pirate decided to send the film to everybody they know. It all baffles me.
