Chat Circle improvements. Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

I realised last night that chat circles are a pretty neat thing. They serve as mini chat rooms. It would be cool, though, if they functioned more like chat rooms.

Some ideas I have are...
1. Moderators. Once a chat circle gets 3 or 4 people (maybe more? Some chat circles can only reach 4 people, though), show a Vote on Moderator button, where players vote on who they think should be a moderator, either by voting for only one person with a majority vote (minus voting for yourself, of course), or having individuals all have a Yea or Nay vote on them. This would obviously need tuning with, because it would be abused.

With the moderators of chat circles, though, they would have a special name color or some other way or signifying their moderator-ness within the chat circle. They would be able to kick or ban people out of the circle, and that sort of thing. That way, greenies can't run into your thriving chat circle to sell their lime bandanas for 300 POE.

This might be too much power, but maybe everyone else should have the option to try to vote down a moderator to get them out of the status, probably nullifying their kick action for that brief time of voting. That, or it would just remove their privledges when they leave the circle.

2. Private chat circles. This would probably work with or instead of moderators. People could set, maybe by right clicking or clicking the circle while a part of it, if it should be private. This would be shown as a giant, translucent X within the circle when a player hovers over it or first spawns on a location. Either players within the circle (moderators, maybe so it doesn't get abused and mass invites don't get sent?) would use a command (/cinvite, may I suggest?) or a radial menu command to invite people, or they would click the circle and recieve permission via vote or moderator to get in.

3. Chat circle names. Another mainly cosmetic thing, but possibly a way for people to sell or find people (for example, a "Selling war brig!" circle or a "Discuss PS2 games!" circle). No innappropriate names, obviously. The name would be shown by hovering over the circle or spawning in the location, and set by a radial menu within the circle or a slash command.

Opinions, flames, post it here.

Well, my thoughts, such as they are:

1. Moderators

The game is, and should be, inherently self-policing. Giving the ability to outright ban people from a chat circle to anybody other than a ringer or OM booting you from the game outright -is- too much power to be handing out.

2. Private chat circles.

There's /tell for pairs of individuals, there's ships, empty islands, and the interior of buildings for groups. Having a private chat circle taking up most of the dock, then not allowing anyone else in is, in my opinion, a very bad idea.

3. Chat circle names.

There's no viable way to make sure there aren't any inappropriate names, short of players seeing them and being offended, then we get into the whole can of worms of just what constitutes inappropriate, what action the OMs should take, and it's just a nother giant pile of grief for them to have all these people complaining about "cyber party" chat circles popping up everywhere.

This seems to me to be something that doesnt enhance game play, but enhances socialising. With all the items on "the List" it seems that this would be very much on the back burner. Things like Cliff Guns, Housing, Crew and Flag buildings, Crew and Flag bank accounts, etc are a higher priority than creating something in game that isnt related to playing.

I think the chat circles work so well because they are so simple.

What I would like to see >in addition to chat circles< is private chat channels, which could have some of the features you describe.

Especially now we have /dnd, there is less need for chat circles to be moderated

I've often wished for a few LARGE static chat circles (like in the good old days), like in a room in the palace, where meetings or events can be held with a guaranteed ability to fit a certain number of people in an organized fashion . . . maybe even have the static circle be something the palace owner can turn on or off. Having this moderator function for it would be useful.

And so everyone knows, I didn't want this to be a HIGH PRIORITY, QUICK, TURN ON THE HOTFIX ALARM--I just wanted it to be added once there's free time. I know that making chat circles more chatroom-like isn't more important than anything else on The List.

Maybe a better idea would be choosing from a set of preset catagories instead of names, for example, "Trade", "Chat", and things like that? It wouldn't need moderation from OMs, then.

That would obviate the need for such close moderation that custom names would create, but at the same time, most chat circles are so fluid, three or four conversations going on at once on different topics, that any classification is almost certian to be at least partly incorrect.

Already in the game. Just have an officer-or-higher and a handy unused ship.

1 and 3 would be a pain, quite frankly. Most circles I go to are a constantly evolving living being, and thus the folks in it are always moving in and out repeatedly. Vote on a mod...and they leave, we must vote a new mod in then? Bah, on the turtle docks we'd be having to vote twice a minute, LOL

I think that Karsh has some good ideas, although I don't know that they need to be so complex.

One of my disappointments so far with this game is the lack of role playing and socializing (I'm on Cobalt, so I suppose that makes a difference, not such a large group of people).

On a ship you can't do anything but work, basically. No time for silliness there. And the docks and Inns have some value for hanging out with other pirates, but there are no real meeting places for chatting. I find the current chat circles don't encourage me to get into conversations with people, because I can't see what they are talking about till I join, and then, most of them are just standing there not talking about anything.

I guess that leaves the Inn, which is fun, but is also dedicated to lots of other activities, and you have to listen to noise from the brawls and tourneys.

I think it would be totally awesome to have a section of each island dedicated to role playing or chatting, and some of Karsh suggestions are nice, especially if you could display a chat topic.

It could be like a Salon in each town, an intellectual meeting place, or a Library or storytelling area.

I think it would also be useful to have dedicated chat circles for other purposes too, like trading items. Right outside the market, for example, there could be an area for talking about prices and trading between pirates.

I feel like I can never meet any other pirates except those in my crew, and that I never get to let my hair down and tell pirate stories, or gossip in game.

Since the "social game" is supposedly so important, it seems weird that the only place to meet people is on the docks.

a valid point.

those are good points, and ones that should be thought out.

1) you know you can hit either 'escape' or 'p' to pause while playing a puzzle, right? that way, even on a ship, you can still be silly. some of the best conversations i've had were on a ship in the middle of a pillage.

2) you can job with other people. 1 still applies, so you can get to know them.

3) i like the idea of a designated trade area outside the market. seems cool.

4) same goes for the salon. i think. although, you could just all meet at the palace or in the back room of the inn.

ok for the private chat circle comment, yes I can see why you would want that, but if youre standing out on the dock, its just plain rude for people to not be able to walk up to you. If you are having a private conversation, and some random greenie comes up and wont go away, go onto a ship, move to a stall that doesnt get many people coming in and out of it (i.e and iron stall or weavery since those dont have work puzzles yet) go to a desert island, or just ask the greenie to go away
