EGGS! 2011 Test Rendering Thread Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

This is the test rendering thread for this year's egg design contest!

Adapting Apollo's post from last year's test rendering thread:

Hopefully there will be some other lovely rendering volunteers available to help out with transforming the flat designs into rendered egg shapes. Thank you very much in advance if you can help!

If you want help with rendering designs, you need to use a standard naming scheme for your file. This makes the process quicker and easier. Please use the following scheme:

Yourname-Eggname#_skin.png

  • change Yourname to your forum or character name.
  • replace Eggname with a short design name for your egg
  • # being the copy/version number. ie. 01, 02, 03, etc.
  • you don't have to do anything to _skin.png
  • after render we can easily remove the _skin indicator and save it as Yourname-Eggname#.png

Feedback on rendered designs belongs in this thread, but any discussion or questions about the event itself might be better in the main event thread here .

Thanks in advance, no rush as I have my own rendering program, but this is my first time using it so I'm just curious to see if I am doing it right :)

I found this kinda helpful last year (please excuse the typo! lol!)-

If you draw a feature in the area marked, it comes out in the middle of the egg once it has been rendered =D It does get stretched, though!

I'm noticing a difference in the highlight between eggs rendered in Blender and those redendered in StudioMax. Is it something to care about?

I'm not sure - the blender ones are shinier... the max ones need a polish!

Definitely losing out on some of the graphics detail due to shine factor... !

Blender is really just a free diagnostic tool in this case. It's not really the best for "final" renders here.

This is my first time attempting to join an egg contest, so I'm no sure on what size should I go, but, now that we're here, I'd like to see this "test-egg" version of mine. Thanks in advance.

Also, be sure to follow the naming scheme in Adrielle's post. Just makes the renderers life easier :) (especially one who has yet to clean out all the random files she has...>_>).

Thank ye, and I will.

Seems I have a lot of work to do yet, the image spreads more than I anticipated.

Aye, the image spreads roughly twice as much horizontally. It's also worth noting that you'll only ever see half of your design, since an egg is round; that back side might be important for different angles, but if you want something to be seen wholly, you've got to plan ahead. Even something that covers half of the texture gets spread over half the egg, which means the edges start bending around and warping visually.

Every year, I *think* I have a good idea of how rendering distorts a design, and then I end up amazed by the changes anyway. So, if someone would wrap these for me, please, I'll start trying to teach myself how to plan for it all over again. Thanks!
