I want to get a cool avatar for my forum posts and have been using microsoft paint files to store my avatars but it seems those files are too big so can someone give me a tip on how to get a small enough avatar to use on the forum.

If you are using the most recent version of Microsoft Paint and it's not letting you choose the jpg file type to save as, there's an annoying trick to getting the program to save jpgs.

First, you have to LOAD one with Paint. To do this, start up paint, do a File Open, and change the Files of Type to All Files.

Navigate to somewhere you have a jpg file, and load it.

Now, go and load up your original picture you wanted to use as an avatar, and do a File SaveAs.

Change the Save as Type box to jpg, and you should be set to go.

Note that MS paint has no setting to change the compression on the jpg, so if it's still too big, you'll have to ask someone with, say, Photoshop or something similarly featured to save it with enough compression to make it less than the limit (6K is it?)

*note that once you've loaded a jpg file once with paint, you won't have to do it again--it's a one-time deal to activate jpg saving.

In MS Paint, use "save as". When the pop-up box comes up, just below the file name box, you can change what format the file is saved as.

GIMP is a free image manipulation program which can convert between many different types of image formats: http://www.gimp.org

If that's too large a download, there are many small image conversion utilities. Try http://www.download.com

If you are saving as GIF or JPG and it is still too big, the only possibility I can think of would be that in fact, it is too big! :) What is the pixel size, HxW, of the image you are trying to use? As a rule, avatar images should be 80x80 pixels in size (or smaller). If the image you are trying to use is larger than that, you should scale it down (MSPaint: Image->Stretch/Skew), or crop it (MSPaint: Use the rectangle selection tool (top button, right side, a dashed square) to select an 80x80 portion of the image (selection pixel size shown in the lower right corner of the status bar), control-C to copy, File->New to get a new workspace, Image->Attributes, set the size to 80x80, then control-V to paste), or both, before trying to save it.

You can try saving it as a different file type. Accepted file types are .png .jpg and .gif. Try saving the picture as all of those and see if one would fit. If not, you can always reduce the file size by making the image smaller, or cutting a part off or leaving stuff out. Or if it's animated, less animation.

If you have a half-decent image editor you can change the colour depth before saving as a GIF, or set to higher compression when saving as JPG. That can reduce the filesize significantly.
