Dutch (Nederlanders) in Viridian

There seem to be a lot of Dutch players in Viridian, and many of them speak very little English. Some of them don't know what to do when they are aboard a ship. Is there anyone out there who might be able to write up a brief FAQ/Tips & Etiquette list in Dutch, along with some English phrases that they need to know? It could be posted here or on a fan site, and we could refer Dutch players to it. Or maybe we could simply have a forum thread in Dutch, so Dutch players could help each other.

Also, could someone tell me how to say "Stations!" or "Take a station!" in Dutch?

Re: Dutch (Nederlanders) in Viridian

I have a couple of Dutch players in my flag; I'll see if they can do something like that, and we'll put it up on www.scupperer.com.

Look for it in a couple of days. :)

Re: Dutch (Nederlanders) in Viridian

There's quite a number of spelling mistakes in there.
Houdwerk should be houtwerk, for instance.
Gaad should be gaat, kannon instead of cannon.
But I reckon everyone that speaks Dutch should be able to make sense of it.
I'm a Belgian myself, so I speak Dutch, as well as French, German and English. If you need some help translating these languages, you can look me up.
I'd translate this right now, but I'm supposed to be studying for my finals. I'll do it tonight though.

Re: Dutch (Nederlanders) in Viridian

Sorry, I have lived outside of belgium for many years, and left at a young age. I only speak at home, don't write, so it's hard for me to get the grammar/spelling right. English is a much more natural language to me. I was just trying to help out though, as it's still easy to recognize even with spelling mistakes.

Nope, in essence people from the Netherlands and Belgium speak the same language, but you can tell where they're from by listening to them speak. It's like the difference between British English and American English. We understand each other, but there's a different accent, and different words.

And Belgica, it wasn't my intention to shoot you down, as I'd stated in my first post, it was indeed easy to understand, even with the mistakes.

"Doet eens puzzelen." is probably the most direct :-)

I would use something like "zou je een van de scheeps puzzels willen gaan doen", I guess (could you please start doing one of the ship puzzles).

[Team please] = Iedereen op dezelfde vijand AUB
That means "everyone on the same enemy", which isn't quite the same. Simply "team aub" is similar to the English non-descriptiveness. (note: "aub" is an abbreviation of "alstublieft", which means "please", or "there you are", depending on circumstance).

[click on the opponent with 1 or 2 dots beside him] = klik op de vijand met 1 of 2 puntjes naast hem
I like "tegenstander" (opponent) better than "vijand" (enemy).

[What is your booty share divy?] = hoeveel geld per persoon?
"Hoe wordt de buit verdeeld?" (=how is the booty divided).

Re: Dutch (Nederlanders) in Viridian

I'm sure people would prefer a very long but accurate translation over a short one to memorize.

Seriously, wouldn't you rather memorize 2-3 words to tell dutch people incase they come on your ship than 15?

Note that telling everyone to attack the same opponent is a valid way of saying team please. There is no specification of in groups of 2 or 3, that is in another line. There are many people who pillage and would rather everyone team on one enemy. To each their own.

Really? I thought Belgians spoke French/Flemish, not Dutch. Or are Flemish and Dutch essentially the same language?

And can anybody tell me why the quote isn't in a little grey box?

For some strange reason I thought German and Dutch were closely related and easily translated/understood with each other.

If thats the case, isn't Indigo the best ocean for them if they are not understanding English very well?

Yep. There's Northern Dutch (usually just referred to as Dutch), which is what people from the Netherlands speak, and there's Southern Dutch (referred to as Flemish), which is what people from the Dutch (or Flemish, if you will) speaking part of Belgium speak.
It's the same language, with a different accent and some words are interpreted in a slightly different way, but in essence, they're the same. You could compare it to American English vs. British English, or even a Southern accent (Hey y'all) vs a Northern accent (What do people from the Northern part of America say?)

They're similar enough that I, with a couple mostly forgotten years of German under my belt, can mostly figure out simple Dutch. But my understanding is that, for native speakers, fluency in one does not even begin to approach fluency in the other.
