Also, a question. How long is the 'short' competition for the tan ribbons going to be? A short time for duty puzzles (5 minutes, 10 at a push) would make several crafting puzzles impossible, so I'm wondering how that's going to work.

I'm pretty disappointed that all of the competitions are pretty much multi-puzzle. Being good at multi-puzzle comps is a worthwhile skill to reward, but it seems like there are a LOT more multi-puzzle competitions than specific single-puzzle competitions, and most competitions that are 4+ puzzles (and to a lesser extant the ones with less puzzles) go to the same 2-3 people for each ocean regardless of what those puzzles are.

Even if it was like "September Multi-Puzzle Ticket Competitions!" that would have been cool. But I really got my hopes up for an interesting competition format and then found out halfway through the month that it was really only for multi-competition puzzlers. I was hoping for frequent red ribbon single puzzle competitions at least, but I guess at least there's one competition for the people who are the best at a particular puzzle.

I think this may be of your concern, then:

Date: Saturday - 9/25 - 9pm
Top Prize: Several Tan Ribbons
Competition Type: Short Multi-puzzle event with each puzzle earning a Tan Ribbon and no real overall prize. (Hint: This is intended to force you to pick your favorite puzzle)

Yep, which is why I said "I guess at least there's going to be one competition for the people who are the best at a particular puzzle" even though it's going to be for tans. If there's only one competition it kinda defeats the purpose of doing tickets though. In my head the tickets sounded cool because you may not necessarily win every single competition but if you place in a few of them you can combine your tickets for some neat prizes, or compete in a bunch of red ribbon competitions and combine the little tickets for something big. You can't really combine one ticket alone though, and only the people who are competitive at almost every puzzle have much chance to get multiple tickets.

I know it's not the end of the world and I'm not trying to throw a fit, it just got my hopes up since the event sounded pretty cool and we only found out halfway through the month that it's basically just for those few people who are stellar at every single puzzle.

I somewhat agree with this, afterall its the 19th, and only 8 comps have been made. I've made this point before but I will go over it again. A normal month of comps would have 4 main fam comps (4 coloured fams) and some months dished out a handful of tan fams on the last comp. Also throughout the month there was starfish comps and those lady bug comps also there was a mix of other comps. So really there hasn't been an increase of comps at all maybe even a decrease because of the value of the tickets.

Personally I would like to see 15 minute comps or so for individual puzzles just for a red ticket which I am asure will make alot more people satisfied of the layout for this month. Dish out the same amount of tickets but make more comps with it rather then just multi puzzle comps for 8 red tickets.

I think majority of the people would agree to have 8 single comps or 4 single and 1 multipuzzle comp then just the 1 comp.

...we only found out halfway through the month that it's basically just for those few people who are stellar at every single puzzle.

As mentioned in the OP, there will be several different types of competitions. The event isn't over. If you don't like a competition you see, it's likely another will come around the bend you'll like more. I agree that some people like single puzzles more. That's why (in the current series) each puzzle has an individual top prize that basically matches the overall prize. You're more than welcome to just focus on one puzzle in order to win that category. With that being said, I'm willing to bet you'll enjoy the end of the competition more. :)

I somewhat agree with this, afterall its the 19th, and only 8 comps have been made.

As I said previously: We've already had well over that amount. They've been hitting multiple timezones so it's likely you missed them. I'm sure others will come around when ye can participate. :)

It'll just be a few random puzzles so it could be sail/rig/dnav/distill or it may be carp/bilge/forage/weave. Could be anything.

Also Cronus are you able to list all the comps thats been, well atleast inform me of the ones I am missing in my current list.

I second that motion. It would also help in maybe discovering a pattern between the competitions already held, so we can roughly judge when the next one will occur (yes....I do know that there is a schedule for a few of the competitions, but I'm referring to the "random" ones).

He doesn't need to give away the pattern. If there is any similar difference between the times of the random competitions, any person with basic mathematics skills can figure it out.

Redeeming Your Points:
  • There will be two days a week you can redeem your points, Thursday and Saturday. This will help keep the queue manageable for OMs on duty. Please try to only file a petition to redeem your points for a prize on these days.
  • File a petition on Thursday or Saturday with the subject, "Sept. Competition Prize (Attn Cronus)"
  • Place the tickets on your pirate. Make sure they're inscribed as being part of this event.
  • List the prize(s) you want and what tickets you have to trade.
  • If you're getting a portrait, please include a general idea of when you'd be available so we can work out a good time.
  • Wait patiently. It's entirely possible it takes me a day or so to make the exchange.

Cronus, your suggested subject is too many characters to fit into the Petition title box. It should read something like "Sept. comp prize (attn Cronus)", which fits as i just used it ;D.

Thanks again Cronus

Can we at least get replacement trinkets as "stubs", sorta as a keepsake? D:

No, sorry. Because we're allowing people to buy/sell/trade them, it won't be possible for us to determine if the person we are giving the "stub" to won it or bought it. So we wouldn't know who to inscribe it to. Thus we're going to allow people to decide if they want to exchange the ticket or not.

Simple. Award the ribbons in pairs.
One has a static label of the form, "Entry ticket worth xx points, September, 2010"
The other has a dynamic label of the form, "Second place won by $PIRATE in $CONTEST on $DATE".

That way you have no confusion, other than figuring out how to ensure that the official entry tickets are not counterfeited by buying blanks at the palace shop.

Annoyance: This is the FIRST I found out about these, almost all the way through the month. Nothing on the main page when I log into the game. Nothing in email. I've stopped paying attention to the familiar contests because I know I'll never "win", but the idea of collecting entry coupons for valuable, non-familiar items? Like that 10 ticket grab bag? That's something. I coulda been a contender.

(Err, at least, as long as more than the top 3 people get tickets. Seriously, how about more tickets to more entrants, even if you either have a lot of "1"'s, or just raise the totals needed for the high-end items. My chance of getting even one third-place finish for a grab-bag? )

Are the regular familiar competitions on the main page or e-mailed to you? No.
Also, if you mean a red/red ribbon as third place, you would need two of them to total 10 points.
