Weekend Doodle - Poetrifecta! 5-7 February [Winners Announced] Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

I love poetry!

Its fun to write and fun to read. I can't decide what my favourite poem type is, though, so I need your help...

I've narrowed it down to three poetic forms, and I need you to write one of each of these types of poems. That'll make it easier for me to pick the one I like the best!

The catch is, I am providing three subjects. You must use these three subjects only for your poems, and only one subject per poem. Which subject will be used for which poem is up to you.

The three poem types are as follows:

Haiku
A form of Japanese poetry, consisting of 3 lines; the first with 5 syllables, the second with 7 syllables, then the third with 5 syllables. Haiku often mention weather, or a season, in some subtle way.

An example:
Lively children play
among the cherry blossoms;
In the old graveyard.

~Written by Chuck Gallozzi

Heroic rhyming couplet
It uses iambic pentameter, the most common meter in English verse, which consists of a line ten syllables long that is accented on every second beat.
In this case, I'll restrict your heroic couplet to six lines, and each pair of two lines should rhyme.

An example (say it out loud, and you'll see that every second syllable, the ones I have underlined, are stressed in speech):
O could I flow like thee, and make thy stream
My great example, as it is my theme!
Though deep, yet clear, though gentle, yet not dull,
Strong without rage, without o'erflowing full.
~Written by John Denham

Limerick
This is a five-line poem with a strict rhyme scheme (aabba), which intends to be witty or amusing.

An example (say it out loud, and listen to which syllables are stressed - you want yours to sound the same):
There once was a man from Peru,
Who dreamed he was eating his shoe.
He awoke in the night
with a terrible fright,
And found out that it was quite true.

~ No idea who wrote this :p

~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`
Your subjects are:

* Vargas's revenge
* An apothecary/Alchemistry
* An epic sword fight
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`

Judging will be based on the following three categories:
* Following the rules of the poem's form, spelling, and grammar
* Adherence to the subjects given
* Creativity and originality

Please post in this thread, with your name and ocean at the top, and your three poems underneath. No titles allowed - the message should be in the poetry. Make an effort to read up on the specific rules to the poetry's form - for example, you won't score as highly if your haiku is 5/7/6 or 5/8/5, because that's not a real haiku, is it!

The contest closes at 11.59pm game time (PST) on Sunday 7 February.

If you have any further questions, please post them in this thread. Go forth and produce some poetry!

Prizes:
The winners will receive a maroon rose flower trinket!
Honourable mentions will receive a winter ornament.

Sounds like a great doodle but this bit seems contradictory:

If you have any further questions, please post them in this thread. Go forth and produce some prose!
Nevertheless, as I'm supposed to be endorsing poetry, I'll be getting involved in this.

Can the heroic rythmic couplet also be four lines long?

So in just one thread
Questions and poems combined
Wonder which is which?

This alternating stress is confusin
My mind doesn't hear that allusion
Pronunciations vary
My ears hear nary
Any pattern of beats Shakesphere-usion.

Ten beats per line mangles badly, I say.
But stress -- how do I locate -- in my way
Of speech, may differ from yours. What makes it
Correct or incorrect down in the pit?

Florentine, Cobalt

1.)
Six Skellies surrounded the challenger
Their echoing laughter a harbinger
Swords slicing and dicing, they fell like flies
The pirate as victor! Complete surprise!

2.)
He burst through the trading post door
And grabbed reading pipes by the score
"They're mine!" His eyes narrowed
With fear I was harrowed
I fainted and fell to the floor

3.)
Pure colors flow down
From silver tubes of magic
The mouse gets the cheese

Sinistergoat of Viridian

We beat him with skill,
stole his treasure and ran; then
cultists sank our ship.
____
The laughter it brought to my crew,
When I told of my first Booched Brew,
I mixed a nice brown,
To go paint the town,
It smashes the bottles, who knew?
____
The sky went darker; bones clattered - they came;
Except for their swords, they were all the same.
The pirates they gathered; each paid his PoE;
When half were ready the skellies said "Go!"
Then fray after fray, humans tried to team;
Yet pirates kept losing; skellies are mean!

Dexla ~ Midnight

As Vargas stared into my very soul,
His pounding fists, revenge his only goal.
I fell so fast it was hardly a fight.
His ship then vanished into the dark night.

There once be a player on Midnight,
Who thought he could put up a swordfight,
Until an 'able' alt came,
And put him to shame,
And took all his poes out of spite.

Red, Yellow, and Blue,
Green, Purple, and Orange too.
Then add Quicksilver!

Aldeberan of Sage

1) Woe the misstep when she thrust and parried
Counter with a slice and now it's hairy
A feint here and riposte there, look out!
Her passatta-sotto ends the bout
Sabers raised to salute in front the face
As we wrap ourselves in true love's embrace

2) Round the fat rat runs
Bubbling concoction simmers
On the belt it goes

3) A man with tousled locks, the island dweller
His homunculi and zombies' skills are not stellar
He shouted gibberish as we fled his rock
Swearing to publish our cowardice -- all talk!
Until we discovered "Aldeberan Sucks!" is a best seller!

Adrielle of Viridian

Clangs of steel echo
two souls locked in fierce battle
until one is overcome

There once was a brand new apothecary
Stocked to the brim with cowslip and elderberry
It made lots of money
And even some honey
Thus making its owner quite merry

Now to arm my fire-forged cult and get even
My great revenge, long last it will be!
So sweet, yet not, and bloody, oh so swift,
Sweet new day, henceforth vengefulness mine.

Guppyzra of Hunter- not Viridian.

Haiku- Vargas's revenge
An inferno burns
Fires rise malevolent
The whole world consumed

Limerick- Alchemistry
The luckiest day of the year,
Should bring every alchemist cheer,
Majesties new,
Prosperities few,
Injuries should not be their fear.

Heroic rhyming couplet - An epic sword fight
Steel swords slash strong towards the captain's chest,
Onboard a ship, shattered by cannons rest,
A fight most sure- combat on the water,
Fuelled by the loss of the young Captain's daughter.

Apollo, locum ocean.

Day gives way to dusk.
Steel slashing, sparking, striking;
Fireworks of fighting.

I think Vargas might be a tease.
In battle we beat him with ease,
But the trinket he ransomed,
Though frightfully handsome,
Appears to be fashioned from cheese.

In tales we read, the alchemists of old
Would seek the grail of turning lead to gold,
Until they realized profit could be made
If dye and paint and lacquer were their trade.

Sallymae, Viridian

Vengeance, invasion
he plots daily, always trapped
in insanity.

Red, yellow, blue, into bottles they flow,
Green, purple, orange; an alchemistry pro,
Add quicksilver too, gives her such a thrill,
A single misturned pipe, wrong color fill,
Unnoticed in tense anticipation,
Broken bottle, ruined transmutation.

Swordfight, great riches to obtain,
Right now, there's no time left to train,
Mistaken sword rack,
Ready to attack,
But trying to fight with a chain!

Pirate: Hawkings
Ocean: Viridian

chaotic jumble
twist, swivel, mingle, order
woot! transmutation!

I once knew a pirate named Crumbell,
Who bragged that ole Vargas he'd humble.
With his ego thus big
Did he take on a brig,
But his teeth were the ones to all crumble.

Two duelers met upon a shore to fight.
One dressed in black the other all in white.
Their blows did fall like driven icy hail,
As each one strove to close their epic tale.
But when each throat a blade they did contend,
Their laughter told they'd each had won a friend.

Herowena of Midnight

One turn too many
Brings wrong pipe to beaker lip
Result: broken glass

Dismissed as just an addled fighting fool
A clever captain once, but now a ghoul
And yet retaining wit enough to plan
The capture of a ship within his lands
In time some startled crew will have the shock
Of finding themselves stranded on the dock

A Leg condescended to spar
With greens he considered sub-par
He received ego thrills
Sending fast insta-kills
'Til Ult alts sent better, by far

Siah of Viridian

Blades cut to the bone;
I n defeat, swordsman whimpers,
Never more to duel.

A transmutation was my great desire
But to attain that my friends did enquire
How many hours did I need to puzzle
And not get my colours in a muddle

------------

There once was a pirate named Jack
And Vargas he ‘oft did attack
A mighty good brawl
Laid the pirate to fall
For Vargas had smacked him right back

Winners!

I was really impressed by the poetry, it was so well done and I wish I could give you all prizes. I hope you all enjoyed the contest.

Thanks to your brilliant efforts, I've decided I like haiku the most, so I've written each of the participants a haiku in return for entering.

Overall Winners of the Poetrifecta Weekend Doodle who will receive a maroon rose trinket are:

Hawkings
of Viridian

Alchemist Hawkings.
Ultimate with a hammer,
Poetry mastered.

Sallymae of Viridian

Handy with a chain,
And with words even better.
Awesome, Sallymae!

Runners Up for the best poems in each category, who will each receive a winter ornament are:

Guppyzra of Hunter - Best Haiku
Guppy, man of art,
Runs events extraordinaire.
Excels in others!

Herowena of Midnight - Best Heroic Couplet
Midnight is lucky,
To have Herowena there,
Prize-winning artist.

Sinistergoat of Viridian - Best Limerick
Sinistergoat's poems
Outclass her alchemistry,
Big booches, not found.

Unfortunately, because Apollo didn't list an ocean, I can't give him a prize. You do get a poem though. ;)

Apollo! Sun God!
You're a Kylie Minogue fan?
That red-blooded woman?

And to the other participants, whose poems I really loved as well:

Lovely Adrielle,
A sunny, sweet doodle fiend.
Keep up the good work!

Wow! Aldeberan!
What a vocabulary,
Left me bedazzled!

Dexla likes cookies.
She bakes, gardens, writes poems.
What can't you do, Dex?

Princess Florentine
Holding a sail in one hand,
Pen in the other.

Foraging for gold,
Siah found something better:
Priceless poetry.

Hope to see you all at my next event,

Thanks Ravine!

Oddly enough, haiku's are my favourite poetry form as well, especially the kind that maintains it's structure and still manages to like an exceedingly small flight of stairs:

Haiku- Vargas's revenge
An inferno burns
Fires rise malevolent
The whole world consumed
I love the raw emotion that can be expressed in a haiku- so short yet so much scope...

Hope to see you all at my next event,
~Ravine
I look forwards to it ;)
