Pumpkin Carving 2009 [Winners Announced!] Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

Leaves are changing, the air is taking on a distinct chill, and black pets are back in the palace shoppe. Days like this really make me want to take out a big scary knife and stab some squash. It is time for the annual piratey pumpkin carving contest!

Rules:
  • Obtain a pumpkin. It must be a real pumpkin; no synthetic props allowed.
  • Find or create a piratey pattern to carve into the pumpkin. Creativity counts, so keep that in mind when you choose what to carve.
  • Carve your pumpkin.
  • While carving your pumpkin, take two progress pictures. Include in these pictures a piece of paper with your pirate name, ocean, and 2009.
  • When the carving is complete, take two pictures of your finished pumpkin - one lit from the inside and one unlit. Make sure your name, ocean, and 2009 are visible in the unlit picture.
  • Crop and resize your pictures to be no more than 700 pixels per side.
  • Host your images online. I recommend using a site like imageshack or photobucket.
  • Post your entry in the entry thread. Use the template below to make sure you don't leave anything out.
  • The deadline for entries is 23:59:59 game time November 1st. Any entries posted or edited after that time will be disqualified.

Entry Template:

Pirate Name:
Ocean:

Link to progress picture 1 (use [url] tags)

Link to progress picture 2 (use [url] tags)

Photo of your lit finished pumpkin (use [img] tags)

Photo of your unlit finished pumpkin (use [img] tags)

Prize list in order of preference (if different from order in the entry thread)

Prizes:
  • Renamed sloop, Rattling Bonefish, with skeletal cannons and a skelly cap'n figurehead
  • Black cat
  • Orange lily trinket
  • Orange/yellow skeleton table and two matching skeleton chairs
  • Orange/black handkerchief trinket
  • Orange clam shell trinket
  • Moss bone trinket
  • Pumpkin pie (orange pie trinket)

Honorable mentions will receive small pumpkin furniture.

Any questions you have about this event should be asked here. The Entry Thread is for entries only.

Happy Halloween!

Any chance of OM dolls and/or eggs being awarded for OM favorites as in years past?

If we photograph our bloody fingers do we get extra points?

Are you going to get Nut first with the goop?

Enquiring Minds want to know!

I think if there was any OM eggs or dolls he would of mentioned it.

But as you spoke of it , it would be a great idea.

But for the bloody fingers i'm afraid it wouldn't be such a pretty sight to give extra points for :P

Hmm for the last question i think he would really want to answer that! hehehe =]

OMs are welcome to give extra prizes as they see fit, but the only prizes I can guarantee for this contest are those listed above.

Things that have come up previous years:

One pumpkin per carving, or can another gourd be added/incorporate?

Any embellishments, things stuck on, hats etc?

And rearrangement of bits of your pumpkin? Cut a bit out somewhere add it on (cocktail stick or innards etc) elsewhere.

ty for running this.

Use only one pumpkin per entry, please.

This is a carving contest. Hats, clothing, Mr. Potatohead ears, and other non-pumpkin bits are not allowed.

I won't disqualify people who have some marker ink showing on their pumpkin (it's often needed for pattern transfer), but that won't help your score as it shouldn't show up in the lit picture anyway.

And rearrangement of bits of your pumpkin? Cut a bit out somewhere add it on (cocktail stick or innards etc) elsewhere.

You can rearrange bits of your pumpkin, but keep in mind that entries that look like a jack-o-lantern will score much better than those that look like piles of pumpkin cubes.

Are we allowed more than one entry?

You may produce more than one entry, but please put all of your entries in a single post in the entry thread.

I can't speak for my colleagues, but it is certainly traditional that Oceanmasters look favorably upon the Great Carving of the Pumpkins. :)

Oh dear, Cronus, there are NEVER any leftover pumpkin seeds in my home. But, if you want, I'll get an extra pumpkin and make you your own batch and mail them to San Francisco! :p

That's ok. I plan on snacking on some of the fished creations. I can't wait to see what pirates come up with this year.

I have a question -- do the "lit" pictures have to be taken in the dark?

(I'm asking because I had a lot of trouble as a judge last year trying to tell on some pictures what parts of the thing glowed, since the room was so bright around the lit pumpkin. I thought the point was to show how they would look in the DARK.)

Yes, the lit picture should be taken in a dark room. The purpose is to show which parts of the pumpkin glow when you put a light inside. If possible, you should avoid using a flash for the lit pictures as well.

Ok, I just came back to read everything to make sure I had it all and realized I didn't write 2009 on the paper for the progress pictures, but I have it without and with on the final picture (took another after I realized it had to have that). Will this disqualify me for not having that (so I shouldn't even bother to submit them) or will it be ok if I put both of the finish pictures with and without 2009 on it?

If you have it on the final picture, I won't disqualify you. The key is that I can tell it's this year's pumpkin, not from a previous contest. It should be clear that the progress pictures became the final product, so that's ok.

Umm.... Quick question before its too late... How strict is the 700x700 rule??? Cuz I noticed that mine (as well as many other's) pumpkin pictures are larger than that. Will this affect our entries?

Oh, nevermind I guess... Lost track of game time and i guess it is too late, well here's to hoping that rule isnt taking into account ^^

Oh is there? The post said it was Nov. 2 12:40something AM. Isnt that the deadline? Well either way, I'm just going to leave my pictures that size. I tried cropping them but it cuts them off.

Try resizing instead of cropping if you can't crop any more.

You have 6 more hours to edit as of the moment I post this, so there's still time.

The 700x700 rule is so the forum formatting doesn't break and so the judges can see your pumpkins on thyeir monitors without scrolling. If an image is slightly larger, I won't disqualify it, but please keep in mind how large images affect the judges' ability to evaluate your entry. You're welcome to link additional higher-resolution images if you feel that the 700 pixel image doesn't show all of the details.
