Silveransom's Slippery Sketches Reply to this Post

I've resisted this urge over the years, but I'm going to go ahead and throw my hat in the ring. See, I'm an artist, and while I've done avatar and other art for the occasional event or friend, I've not had an "art shoppe" that I've tried to manage.

Well, I still don't have a lot of time, and I still can't set up a "proper" storefront, but I am offering to do a bit of art.

As always, I have to do this my way.

So, the conditions I work under are these:

1. I don't promise a quick turnaround. Sure, I often work quickly, but my schedule is such that I don't always have time to do actually do the work. If you commission me to do art for you, I can't guarantee it will be done any time quicker than three months (and poor SaadSkellie and Alethia had to wait longer than that... I still feel bad about that... sorry!). I will try to get it done as soon as I can, but I make no apologies for placing my family and career first in the schedule. (And yes, this is portfolio work and art exercise, so it's *sort of* career based. I'm not looking for excuses *not* to do these pieces, after all.)

2. I can do either a long, meticulous job, as I did for the "Avatar Tech" link down there in my sig, my personal avatar up there, or over here at my blog:

http://tishtoshtesh.wordpress.com/2008/12/09/mini-portfolio/

Or I can do quicker jobs, what I've called "houratars", like one I did for Ilya:

It's ultimately up to you which you'd prefer, noting rightly that the more involved artwork takes more time, effort and commensurate compensation.

3. Your requests can be as detailed or loose as you'd like (though I'll need at least a link to the pirate you want depicted). That said, I reserve the right to refuse any job for whatever reason. I'm mean that way. Yarrr, I be a pirate.

So, if you can agree to those terms, perhaps it's best to get to the key point; prices.

---------------------

An hour of my freelance art time would buy approximately 100 doubloons, give or take. I know, that's not cheap, but neither can I be too generous. Pirate, remember? Yarrr!

Also, prices can be fickle things, and I don't have infinite time, even if infinite money was in the offering. Blarrrrgh.

So, we're going to run with a blind bid system.

PM me with your request, whether houratar or complexatar, and make me an offer. After a week or so, I'll take whatever I think I can handle in a good time frame, and work on the winning bidders' art. I'll note who I'm doing art for, but never publish the bids. With any luck, this means that I can keep a lid on how much I'm doing at once, and get to as many people in the long run as possible. Also, if I don't happen to pick you up in the first pass, you need not make a new bid. It might not hurt if you're competing with others, but it's not necessary; I'll keep track of everyone.

(Let's be honest, I'd love to make a living at this, but this is for game money, so it's a portfolio side project. I love doing art, but I've got to keep priorities, food on the table, yarra, yarra, yarra.)

I'm happy to take PoE, Doubloons or even nice furniture in top notch condition. (Or ships. I really like ships.) Any ocean is fine, but English speaking ones are easier to deal with, since I don't know much Spanish, German or Japanese. I'll try to find fair market value for any "goods" or Doubs you offer and use PoE as a baseline.

With that in mind, perhaps a minimum is in order:

Bare minimum for an Houratar: 10,000 PoE (or equivalent)

Bare minimum for a Complexatar: 50,000 PoE (or equivalent)

Oh, and since I scan my sketches in at 600 DPI and work at high resolution, I'll not only be giving you the finished avatar sized for the forums, but also a larger version of the art for printing or whatever. I'll throw in the original scan if you want it. I sketch in ballpoint pen, which might be interesting to some of you. ;)

So thanks for your interest! If it turns out I don't get any takers since I'm an egotistical, deluded pirate, well, I won't be bitter. Just despondent over my shattered self-image, hiding in a corner of the Ice ocean, crying frozen tears.

Serves me right, aye?

My avatar is somewhere in the middle, leaning to the complex side. If I hadn't bothered with rope coils or some of the clothing detail, it would have been a basic one.

If you want to bracket it, consider it on the high end of the "basic" group. ;)

This isn't technically necessary for my sake. I can easily look up things on the YPPedia and use those as reference, if you want something from in the game.

If you want a portrait to match an avvie, that's cool... but don't worry about it for the sake of requesting art.

Aye, you read that correctly. Sloops are dandy as a bid component, just as any other ship would be. Whether one alone is enough depends somewhat on who else is bidding, and with what, and to a degree, which ocean (since ships are a bit more expensive on green oceans). ;)

Well thank you all muchly! It appears that there is indeed a bit of demand for these bits o' artistry that I enjoy crafting.

In no particular order, then, I'll be starting on works for the following pirates:

Noseyi/Silvernose
Ogimus
Libelle/Kolibri
Lilymoon/Faeree
Jutecloth

I have also received requests from a handful of other pirates, and as yet, I have not found an offer to refuse. If you're not in that first batch, don't fret, I will be getting to your request once I get a few things done. (So if you've requested a piece to date, you'll get it... just not in this first batch.)

I do have a tendency to work on multiple pieces at once, so I may even start on a few others here and there.

Payment is due only upon completion, so don't fret about that either. (Though I will ask that you pay before I actually send you the art. I'll send a preview upon completion.)

If you have any questions on your particular request, or additions, please PM me. In the meantime, thanks again, and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of this particular exercise. :)

I'm still working on the aforementioned players' art, but have finished Kolibri/Libelle's request, and am picking up the option on DaneT's request.

I have high hopes for the holidays, wherein I'll have a few hours here and there to work on these. I've been having fun with these requests so far, so thanks, mates!

As before, I'll note that I fully intend to get to every request that I have to date, so if you're not on the short list, don't fret, I'll get to you! (Remember, my schedule is unfortunately not at the point where I can do this sort of thing full time, but I sure enjoy doing it when I can squeeze it in.) Also, if you have any questions on a request you've submitted, please PM me. If, for some reason, I've let my PM box become full, I can also be reached at silverwings.art via the gmail system.

I'll also still take requests, though I should note that existing requests will have priority, and that again, my turnaround time just isn't all that fast. That's a particular foible of mine that unfortunately comes with the territory.

For reference, Kolibri's piece in big and small form:

It's been far too long. I'm still neck deep in illustrating a book, which will keep me busy for the next two months or so, but after that, I will be resuming work on the requests that have been made so far. Please forgive my tardiness, and if you would like to rescind your request, I am not offended.

If you'd like to check with me and make sure you're still on the list, please feel free to do so. I'll be sending out a series of PMs to check with people who have made requests later tonight.

In the meantime, thank you all for interest expressed, and please know that I'm not giving up on this, I have just been extraordinarily busy. In a messed up economy, perhaps that's a good thing, though.

This will, of course, mean that working through my previous queue will also take time, if those intrepid pirates are still interested. So, any new requests will be honored inasmuch as it is in my power to do so, but again, I cannot promise a quick turnaround. I wish I could.
