[Question] Offensive word filters Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

I'd have used the previous thread, but it's locked for obvious reasons, and I couldn't find an alternative new home for this.

In a previous thread on dialogue filters, Nemo wrote:
Extremely inappropriate words, like "rape" or racial slurs, we deliberately don't filter. We want to know this person is potentially offensive immediately. We don't want people thinking we encourage the use of the word in a translated form. Slurs shouldn't be used at all and rape is a very serious issue that would be mocked by having it changed to some pirate word.

I have been having an intermittent problem with statements I make by /tell, /fo, /cr or speaking, just not appearing. I type, send, and nothing happens.

Yesterday, when it happened about three times in one day, I finally realised the common link between the sentences that vanish. It's an emote I quite often use - *sniggers*. Think about it.

So, is the statement above correct? Searching through the forum for information on this, the quote above was the best source I could find, and that seemed to indicate that the most offensive words would go through unfiltered. Assuming I have diagnosed this correctly, it seems that that's not the case - the whole entry goes straight to /dev/null.

Now, we can have the same old discussion about overenthusiastic filtering, and how annoying it can be to have an absolutely normal word blocked because a constituent of it is considered offensive, but... if I've interpreted correctly, and this is what is happening, could there at least be some kind of response from the game to explain that it's done so? A little "I'm sorry, you've used a word there that we can't allow" would have enabled me to look at what I wrote and change the words I use to avoid the problem, rather than leaving me completely mystified.

There is a difference between "word" and "*word." It sounds like we have that one set to "*word," though I can't figure out any variation of the slur that would fit that usage. Maybe we'll restrict it to "word" (and "word*").

Anyway, to avoid apalling typos and misunderstandings, I've always opted for the CK version.

That type of filter doesn't bug me so much as the fact that I couldn't create the name Butterbur because it started with Butt. :( Of course I can live with it if it saves the administration from dealing with the myriad of HI-larious people who want to be Buttheads.

Well, really, the existence of a single Butthead will save us from all the others that want to be Buttheads too. So, an OM named Butthead would have the same effect as censorship in this case, and would be way awesomer.

Oh, that's why I couldn't make an alt named Buttercup! Okay, makes a bit more sense now. (Buttercup is the cool Powerpuff girl, plus the Princess Bride. I was surprised to do a /who on the name and find it vacant)

i tried to type in a japanese theatre word the other night only to have it come out as "barnaclee." i tried to type in shite, the main character's designation in japanese noh theatre.

could the devs maybe set it so words that start with something like that won't be filtered if there are letters after? i mean, i was trying to have a serious conversation, and it just came out like i was swearing.

I think it would be difficult to draw a line at allowed words, since some people also say 'shite' (pronounced shyte, I think) for the word barnacle replaces

If that were the case, then all sorts of deviations would also be permitted (i.e. add "head" to the end of the word you're talking about, and you'd be all set with something somewhat worse that Butthead).

So, I was feeding my barnacalezu dog a barnacleake mushroom and then he took a barnacle right there on my floor as I was watching barnaclee theater on the television.

The word filter dosn't care about the ending, as it shouldn't - because many people are barancleheads.

The filter as applied to 'shit' is /\wshit(.*)\w/barnacle\1/. If the word is an infix it is not filtered. If it is prefix, it is filtered.

Compare this with the transposition of 's' and 'i' in "inexpensive" (a typo that confused me which produces

Shagie says, "inexJohn Thomasve"
Shagie sayss, "John Thomasula"

In this case, the filter is /\w(.*)penis(.*)\w/\1John Tomas\2/.

Another comparison is 'twat' which is /\wtwat\w/halibut/. Anything before or after twat would pass it through the filter.

The use of 'snigger' appears to have the filter of /.*nigger.*// which completely swallows the entire line as if you didn't say anything.

I don't know why various filteres were set up the way there are - some ignoring the suffix, others doing exact match only, and yet others swalling the entire line. However, in the case of 'shit' the shuffix on it is ignored.

(Professionaly I work with regular expression and was curious how the various filters are employed - prefix, infix, suffix considerations. My appologies to the OMs for any bells I may have set off when testing this for posting)

It's based on the perceived offense factor of the word. Well, it's more simple than that, really. Vulgar slang for say, parts of the body, and various other vulgar slang words are filtered based on your filter setting in the Options menu. Racial slurs are dropped outright. That's basically it.

Its not the offensiveness factor but rather that some of them only filter the word as a prefix and others accept it anywhere as a substring and some only match against the whole word. I certainly do understand the droped nature of the filter for racial slurs.

To go back to my original request, while I can understand using *word* as a filter and dropping the whole sentence, I really wish in that situation it would pop a message up to say that it had done so.

being a responsible adult who can handle mature themes, i simply turned off my language filter the first day i played YPP. it's sort of depressing that filters are needed, but i can see their usefulness for those who have children playing, in case the occasional barnaclehead starts causing problems and can't be booted fast enough. for the discussion of the character Shite, once you realized it was filtered you could simply alter your wording ("s h it e"), and youyr mates would probably understand. the only real concern i have is the names that are non-creatable; if the OM's were not so busy already I'd suggest having them be able to manually input them, perhaps.

The filter killed Butterbur but it let in some pirate named Candyass?

I find the latter more offensive than Butthead. :P

It could be an inactive name. I've heard the ringers don't mess with inactive names, simply because an inactive account works just the same as the filter when trying to create a new pirate.

I had the same problem with sniggering. Now I just have to settle for snickering... it took me about 20 minutes of typing the same message to figure it out. Very annoying, but I agree with eating the statement.

I've got to say that my favorite filter blunder is that all employers in the game are homosexuals. I don't remember which word comes out with the filtered word "landlubber," but it essentially means "gay." Then if you ever happen to be in game when you get paid for your shop job.... it tells you that "your landlubber employer pays you..."

Thus, all in game employers are gay.

You now have learned a new thing to giggle about.

That's not a filter blunder.

The filtered word you are talking about doesn't mean "gay" any more than the n-word means "dark-skinned." It is filtered to landlubber to make it a completely benign comment that has nothing to do with a person's sexuality.

Now, if it said "Your happy employers pay ye N poe," that could be misconstrued as suggesting your employers are gay, and that might be funny.

I wouldn't call it a blunder :)
It says "Yer landlubbin' employers pay ye xxx poe."

Landlubber definition: n 1: a person who lives and works on land [syn: landsman, landman] 2: an inexperienced sailor; a sailor on the first voyage [syn: lubber, landsman]

One of the most used words in cliché piratey.

That payout text doesn't say "landlubber employer" or "landlubbering" employer (which it would if the original text said fagging/fag employer (in the sense to work to exhaustion/toil/To exhaust/weary) and it was autofiltered).

By your logic, every "happy pirate" would be homosexual, to "scupper someone in pvp" would be some virtual, nautical fetish, and "dividing the booty" would be a painful medical procedure.
