Thoughts on Jade archipelago themes Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

I wanted to start a thread about what the name Jade Archipelago made people think of for island names and types, because associations like that amuse me.

Naturally, Jade archipelago for my instantly makes me think of New Zealand, as it is pretty much our national gem here. (if you've ever been to Australia, a comparison with opals there will suffice) So that makes me think things like "Rutherford island" and want to somehow work the word "Ponamu" into an island name. (That's the Maori name for greenstone, ie. jade)

The other association I have with it is definately of forests, (okay, so I'm guilty. I'm thinking more New Zealand bush than forests ;) ) so it makes me think that there ought to be at least one heavily forested island in Jade.

I think of that new RPG that's coming out...Jade Empire or something close to that which then leads me to thinking about Asian/Oriental things. Jade also makes me think of dragons...

Yup. When I heard the name of the arch I thought of the round in Mortal Kombat where I'd be looking for Jade popping out from the scenery to unlock her.

Jungle. The green, oppresive humidity. The sky, almost tinted green by the foliage.

The smell of the sea, and cloves, and cinammon, and spices. Teak hulls. Hardwood canoes.

Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam. Raden Wijaya. Garuda. Hanuman. Traces of a thousand cultures, with a thousand flavors of humanity.

Earth magic. Fertility and death. Ragda and Barong.

The endless open seas. The stifling, humid jungles. The smell of salt and spices. The smell of rot and vegetation.

I always think of Ponamu clubs whenever someone says jade, actually.

What bothers me is that when people talk about Asian or Oriental they suddenly think about the Japanese. I mean, it really annoys.

It's like hearing someone here talking about America and saying, "I tell you, New York is so amazing!" and then generalizing about all Americans based on their perceptions on New Yorkers. Or Hollywood. Hollywood's another popular one.

But Jade? Jade makes me think of Chinese feitsui.

I suppose my question isn't directed so much at you, but at generalizing westerners.

/me thinks of Yafutoma, the "Mysterious East" from Skies of Arcadia, which was an amalgam of Chinese and Japanese influences. Lots of weird, tiny little islands right out of Asian fairy-tale, and a kingdom centered around one huge mountain that looks suspiciously like Fuji.

Ocean#3 should, I demand Upsilon! It is so much cooler than Epsilon. And Mu could be cow themed.

EDIT: And I think an Oceanic arch-less capital would be cool. The three archs could be centered around it.

But yeah, the Chinese LOVED 'em. The Japanese hardly saw any use of jade, I think.

Has anyone thought of elephants? I mean, I see jade carved into the shape of an elephant all over the place. Jewelry, paper weights... um, more jewelry... Anyway, what about Elephant Island? :) You could even have a little baby elephant that follows you everywhere like the sheep and pigs. And can we name him Elephant Gerald?? (I couldn't resist...)

I have no idea what Ponamu is, but I love the sound of the word. :)

The resason that westerners think of Chinese when they think of Jade is quite simple. The Chinese quite prolifically produced Jade figures, bowls and other trinkets that have been found in substandial quantities, and therefore nearly every museum on the face of the planet has Chinese Jade.

Jade was also utilized for burial rites in america by the Olmecs, Mayan and Inka. It was traded heavily from the far east by the Mycenan and Minoans to the west. It is also contemporarily associated with New Zealand.

Jade truly has roots on every continent in the world, and over the past 5,000 years has been utilized by hundreds of societies. Would it not be a proper tribute to this prolific gem to encompass all of it's facets, instead of merely attributing it to China and moving on?
