Correction: it is okay to use commodities on this isles. Just don't go overboard with the oak trees.

I tried making a medium one. It looks a little dodgy again. Do you guys have any hints for creating tree/bushy areas? I tried starting with bigger things then adding little things to fill it in. I'm not sure what's wrong with it, but it looks a bit wrong (I know it looks griddy in the middle).

I start with small and than applay bigger :)
Also I would add more palms and lose oak.
Try to hide apothecary sign.
Stones on entrance of apothecary turning into grass - unnatural
And as emerson says something have to happen to grass near firepit.
I like the shape of island and its nice and green

I have made major changes to the first island posted, turning it into a medium (at least so I think). XML file.

According to the rules:

The judges reserve the right to re-classify an island size if they feel it was placed in the wrong category.

How could we actually know if we have chosen the right category for our islands? Is there any chance to know it before the deadline and thus having the chance to modify our design so to enter the desired category? Thanks.

That's true for most island projects, but not so much for this, since they can't be foraged anyway.

That said, commodity pieces should be used SPARINGLY. So, no massive fields of Iris Root or mountains of Iron. But the occasional commodity for color is acceptable.

Edit: oops, I see Fiddler already addressed this.

It has been brought to my attention that some entries have been posted to the feedback thread that contain recognizable pieces of the example islands, as though they were built on top of the examples.

This is plagiarism and is grounds for disqualification. I don't have time to investigate until Monday morning, so I'm giving everybody one chance to remove any infringing islands. If, by Monday morning, I can still recognize any piece of the example islands in your island, you will be disqualified.

I did the things that were suggested, and I am a lot happier with the trees - what do you think?

Should I make it a bit deeper - I just read that "illusion that the island goes on forever" bit. Any suggestions/pointing out problems would be very much appreciated =)!

You'll just have to rely on feedback in this thread, your own best judgment, and comparison to the existing islands as shown on the wiki. The judges won't be convening until after the submission deadline so there's no official word available before then.

Unfortunately I have a problem with this. It is pretty much the exact same shape as Ix Chel Island on Hunter. You probably haven't seen this island before but I don't see how it can be put into the game when this Island is going to be colonized this summer.

Can we use stairs? I am kind thinking of making an Inca style platform where the cultists spawn at the top, and walk down the stairs to get you! Would that be ok?

But maybe with a bigger area for the platform. Is it ok that my cultists come down stairs?

I have my doubts on being able to create a convincing and natural-looking staircase without use of the fort-wall pieces, but feel free to give it a try and see how it looks.

I mean like this:

That's not so good. It's really hard to pull off the "crumbling fort" combined with the "elevated platform" with the pieces we have at our disposal. Try using the stone wall instead of the fort wall, create gaps, and cover a lot of it with vegetation. I can show you some screenshots of something that might work, but you'll have to wait till tomorrow.

It is looking good - I would add more trees/plants, and block off the back of the spawn point (you could just move the spawn point back a little so that the manor and grass block it off at the back).

Also, I am not sure whether you should have trees growing out of your bog, though I guess in real life, some trees do. Try using different views of the trees - so they face different ways and look a bit more natural.

I've only skimmed through this thread, but I wanted to say that Mask's island shows great promise in that it has a lot of greenery. Remember, when going to a CI, the pirate experiences dim lighting, jungle noises, etc. All that's lacking are the warmth and humidity of a Caribbean night, maybe some mosquitoes and poison ivy. There has to be dense green growth, so thick you can't walk through it, so deep you can't see to the other side. There are many wonderful islands here, but they don't all meet this basic requirement.

Mask - If you want to add pizazz, how about some of those cursed free-standing banners? Also, you might check the Hiding the Grid link in the contest description.

Try to keep the foraging pit over dirt, it'll look more natural.

Done!

Manually placed seawater tiles will make your shoreline unwalkable so it's important to make seawater the default base tile.

Done!

Try increasing the depth of the vegetation in the back.

Done!

I also a little bit reworked groundtiles at the beach. What about grass (lite) tiles at the enemy area? Aren't they too squareish?
Waiting for more critique...
Thanks!
