Graduation from university is an exciting time for anyone. After years of hard work, they hand you your degree, and with a few well-chosen words, they send you into the world to make your mark. The first step in making that mark? Getting a job. Now, I finished my degree in Geology just before Christmas. January rolled around, and I was optimistic. February saw me enthusiastically pushing resumes at any company that did anything remotely close to what I wanted to do: Environmental Consulting. In March, I started to waver. It seemed like every application I submitted went flying into a great void, never to be seen again by human eyes. April has come and gone with no success. Seems that with the world in its current state, there are very few people hiring new grads! So, with the dawn of May, I realized something: I need a good luck charm! Now, as a geologist, there is clearly only one choice for a good luck charm. A rock. A pet rock. And this is where you come in; I need you to design me a pet rock that will act as a good luck charm to help me get a job! Your Task Create a pet rock using a single rock, crafting materials, paints, markers, and found items. As it is a pet rock, it should include a face of some sort. It does not need to have human features, but it should have features of some sort. Your rock may be any size, but remember that if we can't see it, we can't judge it! While it is not a requirement, the pirateiest entry will receive a special prize! We also need you to write a brief (approximately 150 words) introduction to your rock telling us the rock's characteristics and why it will bring me luck in my job search. Entries should be no longer than 300 words, once you pass this limit, you're taking the chance that the judges will not mark this part of your entry. This should be written in English and spelling, punctuation, and grammar conventions should be followed. How To Enter In the entry thread post, no later than 11:59:59PM on Sunday, June 28th, 2009: -2 Creation Photos - you in the process of making your lucky pet rock. -1 Finished Product Photo - a final presentation photo of your entry. This should be taken on a plain background and should not include a "scene" of which your rock is a part. We want to see your pet rock in all its glory, and do not want anything to detract from its awesomeness. Consider taking this photo against a plain coloured wall or bed sheet, or on a plain background such as grass. This is the photo your entry will be judged on. In every photo you must have a nametag with your pirate name and ocean on it. This cannot be photo-shopped in later. - Your introductory paragraph. We will be using the word count tool at http://www.wordcounttool.com/ so that you can check your word count in advance of posting. Please include your pirate name and ocean as well as the prize list in your preferred order. Entries must be posted in the Entry thread to be eligible for prizes. Judging Judging will be based on the design and creativity of your pet rock and your introduction paragraph. In order to be eligible, your entry must include: - Your three photos, taken on a plain background, with your name and ocean in each picture - Your paragraph, approximately 150 words long, in the post (no links please) Prizes
BONUS! The pirateiest entry will receive: - Pirate Flag The first prize entry will also receive a grey ribbon to commemorate their lucky entry! I will try my best to update this post with any questions that we answer throughout the thread so that you don't have to sift through it to find them. All oceans, including Opal! Can I use a fossil? Yes! Fossils are rocks too! For the most part at least. What about a meteorite? Yes, meteors are also rocks, and are eligible in this contest. Though really... Most meteorites are pretty small by the time they reach us, and do you want to cover a rock that cool in craft supplies? Can I enter more than once? ONE entry per person is permitted! Do we get to choose which prize we want? Or do you? So long as you have provided a list, we will give you the item you ranked highest that is still available. If you do not provide a list, we will assume that the default order is how you prefer it, and will give you the highest prize still available in that order. The rock does not have to be found. Museum rocks are valid, as are rock pendants that can be found in alternative healing shoppes, so long as they don't have anything affixed to them before you begin decorating. Is there any chance that our personal appearance in the photos can just be hands / body and a name tag, or some other way o' handlin' it for pirates who choose not to associate their actual identities with their online lives? We don't need YOU in the picture. Just a picture of the rock as you work on it with a namecard with your PIRATE name and Ocean. So, perhaps your first picture is your rock with all your supplies laid out. Your second picture can be the rock with some of the features affixed. Then a final picture of the rock. Can My rock be coloured in with felt tip pens to create a Puzzle pirate face? The war brig will be a standard name. In order to make prize delivery easier for Apollo, we do not include a name. Just know that it will be a standard, game-generated name. As for choosing the port, I believe that that is up to Apollo when he works his prize magic. I don't think you'll find your ship at some far away outpost, but you should be prepared to move the boat to the place you want it after prize delivery. We decided not to put a size limit on the rocks. Basically, they need to be big enough to see. It is a Pet Rock contest, so make sure the rock is the feature element in your entry. It's great to see all the entries, and I think it's working! I've heard from a couple of places, but they haven't quite worked out for one reason or another! I think it's just a matter of time. I'd just like to request that when people are posting pictures that they make sure that the pictures are of a reasonable size for the forums. Photos can be re-sized using Photobucket or Imageshack, or it can be done in programs like MS Paint prior to uploading. If you're unable to re-size your photos, please list them as links, as very large image files lead to very long loading times, especially for those that have slower internet connections. Reasonably-sized photos should fit within the average screen, and should not "stretch" the forum borders (this can be checked by previewing your post before posting). Also, please do not worry that the judges will not see your photos if you put them in your post as links. All eligible entries will be seen by the judges.
