Like Owlwhisperer said, it's the same thing as pausing a CC15 beforehand and waiting until the competition starts. These things have start times for a reason, it's how well you can puzzle in 30/45/60/etc. minutes, not how well you can puzzle in 30/45/60 plus however long you can puzzle beforehand.

It's not really even that, with the scoring method.

The longer competitions stay scored exclusively by single duty reports, the more they are going to get gamed, no matter what OOO might try to implement, such as excluding previous puzzle sessions.

Given, that's AEST time and it's out by an hour. But it was still less than 48 hours notice. Not that I'd be up at 4am on a weekday to take part in my favorite puzzle ANYWAY.

And yes, I did check at the start of the month. Right up until the 5th local because I was away over the weekend and didn't check it on Monday to find out about a comp early morning on Tuesday.

*begs Prometheus* Another day's notice before the first competition please?

Why aren't these competitions being listed in the events tab in Puzzle Pirates anymore?

My crew is complaining because they keep missing these events, and the comps run early in the month are getting listed in the forums only a couple of days before they are on.

Please start listing the monthly familiar comps in the game again, many people want to enter them so I think they are worthy of mention there.

If they are going to have coloured fam comps on hunter they might as well just start handing out the fams to duchess. She seems to win like 90% of the fam comps.

I did that in a sailing comp a while back. Still, instead of focusing on getting people to beat her, you should instead focus on getting good enough to beat her yourself. :) I honestly believe that anybody can become good enough at puzzles to win these comps... it just takes a LOT of practice and effort at improving. Its not something you can do quickly and easily... i know it was neither quick nor easy for me to get good enough to win comps. The important thing is to never think that the puzzling you do is "good enough" or that you have gotten as good as you can get; you should always be working to improve. I can certainly myself understand the frustration of always being beat by someone (I even remember an angry tell I sent to Rapportus after placing second to him in a colored fam pillaging pentathalon about a year ago), but once I got past the initial annoyance, I used that as a reason to make myself do better and become better in the future. I kind of wish Rapportus was still around, so I could see how I would compare to him now (at least in piracy puzzles as he would definately still own me in anything crafting related).

When we're into that topic, i beat Duchess in the friday sailing comp.
Since it seems to be based on size of your incred, as long as you hit something sweet not even Duchess can beat you.
And by sweet i mean high efficieny.
Keep your eyes open for the Sunday one, because i might do the same.
Time will tell

Challenge gives you a reason to improve.
Reasons to improve gives you motivation.
Motivation gives you skill.
Skill gives you familiars.

Becoming good enough to beat duchess isnt exactly a life goal for me :P But I still do try to improve. And besides her I havn't actually found anybody that continuosly beats me in bilging on any smh. I don't really know how i compare to the other top bilgers in the game but i'd like to put myself somewhere up on the ladder :)

I havnt exactly found a strategy for bilging that would allow me to beat duchess, although I would appreciate anybody with ideas. Until then I'm just gonna bilge on other oceans to see if i stand a chance at winning in comps there :)

i think there are way more people able to beat duchess or anyone at the puzzle comps. it also matters how much time people are willing to spend on figuring out how to score that high score. i take myself for example, my main goal is getting #1 in as many puzzles as possible so i developed my skills to be consistent and high, not extremely high. i play the comps exactly the same as i play my normal session. in crafting this doesn't matter, you'll win that way if your good at the puzzles (no, you won't win every single one, since luck is a big factor in many of the 1-puzzle crafting comps). in the piracies however (especially the 1-puzzle comps) you can significantly increase yer chances of scoring very high by adapting yer style from a normal playstyle to a i need to get one very high score and the rest doesn't matter style. some are willing to do so, some are not. if i look at my average sailing on a pilly most of my scores aren't good enough to place top 10 in a comp, however sometimes i come across some lucky timing and board spawns to get scores that are top 3, even though im not focusing on it. i play the comps (if i can join) and it's nice if i get one of those moments, and if not i won't win. i could also come up with a plan to make sure i get at least 1 of those moments in the comp, but i can't be interested to do so.

meh, my 2 cents, have fun those that can join tomorrow, i might hop by for the shipwright one, considering that one was lucky for me last time :P

This.

Puzzle competitions are scored very differently than how one's puzzle standing is scored. Being #1 in a puzzle means you are consistently good at a puzzle. Winning a puzzle competition means you puzzle very well for that one league.

Not saying it's a bad thing, they're just 2 different things. Having the ability to keep an incred for a whole Atlantis segment is a very different skill than getting one really high scoring incred for a 3 minute LP. As Roleni pointed out, someone who may do really well in a puzzle competition may not fair so well in an old style bake-off. However, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Duchess can do well in bake-offs too.

Either way people should stop complaining about her skill and work to get better themselves. I don't hear people complaining that Usain Bolt is too fast and should stop competing in races.

Just sayin'

Just to touch up on some details, I'm around 80% sure duchess is actually a guy:P

Anyways, the style I use for comps doesnt differ at all from my style while doing the puzzle casually. This is because i go for the highest score i can for every leugue point. I'm not exactly sure how you can use inconsistancy to make your score higher in bilging. Although it might be possible in rigging for looping the whole board and stuff.

But I don't really see the point of somebody having like 50 fams.
