Not to burst your bubble, but consistency is, sadly, meaningless. These are competitions, where anomalies in the positive direction are all that matter. ;)

If you claim to be brilliant, yet can't submit an amazing score in the competitions, doesn't that reek of inconsistency?

Please don't contradict yourself. These competitions are excellent.

Not at all. An able can be consistent in getting fines. :P

Statistically, selecting the single top duty report is a ludicrous way of measuring performance. The highest and lowest scores are the *least* likely to accurately represent a scoring sample.

Maxing out score for a single DR tends to favor gaming the system, not puzzling playstyles that have practical usefulness.

(Example: Player A averages a score of 100, with a standard deviation of 10. Player B averages a score of 90, with a SD of 20. Player A is more consistent, not to mention beats player B roughly 5 out of 6 times head to head and has a higher stat. Player B is more likely to score higher in a competition, however.)

Edit: I think you forgot to turn on your sarcasm detector with the other post. ;)

You're right about the scoring sample, but that's not the aim of these competitions. I think you got confused.

I'd like to thank you, OMs, or whoever is doing them, for making competitions more regular :) Like the multicomp just now, nothing to do and that popped up, so thanks once again!

OK, from a definition of competition:

1. The act of competing, as for profit or a prize; rivalry.
2. A test of skill or ability; a contest: a skating competition.

I'd suggest that it is, in fact, OOO who is confused. ;)

This isn't the thread to hash out the details, no, and it's been discussed already. The fact is, though, there are other contests that are far better measures of skill and performance than competitions are. (I have no business finishing second in any kind of ocean-wide sailing contest, for example...:P)

I have no problem with the fact that one person can easily win 2 oceans in the 30 minute span (Which is why I preferred the 15 minute comps), or even with the minute possibility that these were two different people, but I was warned before that this would happen and several people I spoke to are doubtful of the legitimacy of these results.
Sage, count yourself lucky. :P

as far as i know, this is completely legitimate. the bug (not literally, or you would be bugabusing, which is illegal) in rigging competition has been pointed out already, they still decided to run, then you try to get the highest inc and with that's a certain set-up of yer board. if you can do that in 10 mins, you have 20 mins left, there's no reason you cannot enter on another ocean. you theoretically couldn't even know you we're gonna win.

again, i just ask, no more rigging comps, they're bugged more then any other and in my opinion award learning a single trick that's not used in any normal rigging situation in stead of actual rigging skill.

(P.S. geo, im not saying you lack the skill, i guess you know what i mean)

EDIT: i prefered sleep over a bugged competition when i woke up.

You should stop opposing the fullboard clears. I did it in today's comp and zenith'd at 5th before quickly dropping, so in my opinion it's now just a fun trick to pull off as opposed to something comps can be won with.

I looped the full board twice on Cobalt and took 7th place. The building process were a bit clumsy, but it seems like it might be possibly to do it efficiently enough to do full loops as part of regular play

I didn't check the standings during the competition, so I don't know my peak position. I suspect the people who placed above me just looped before I did (It seems possible to 'sit' on a loop until the competition starts). This is largely guesswork, though.

I don't know the scoring merits of one full loop versus another. (i.e., number of wilds and other special pieces)

Congratulations to those that won.

I took 5th in the cobalt competition without doing anything even remotely close to a full loop... I just rigged the way I normally would on pillages. (I don't play on Sheeran there, so that would be why my name wouldn't look familiar.) As such, I think it is safe to say that a full loop at least isn't an automatic win, though it may depend on the number of wilds or the combos done after that, or something like that. I don't have a clue what the ones that won did.

Thanks for the info, UCSB.

Full loops can leave you stranded, especially if you don't complete them early. If they fill the remainder of your stars, you don't get to use any of the bonuses generated.

Even then, though, they keep your sail indicator screaming for at least two nav points. It looks like a series of large clears can be more powerful, though. I'll remember for next time.

I got 3rd in Cobalt off of clearing a bunch of blobs in one LP. I was rigging pretty crappily (didn't break top 20 until that point) but got a handful of tars thanks to the board being nice with generating small groups close together. After the tars went into lucky colors I decided to try to max out that LP while the going was good at it worked out.

In other words, I got lucky; the only thing I did well was notice that it was happening and take advantage of it. I think my biggest clear was 18. :P

Highest for second in Cobalt shipwright was "only" Vegas^3, so that's not the best measurement for it. Lots of 5-pieces got cleared, though. :P

How can somebody win the overall and not even place in any of the individuals? Seems a bit flawed to me.

It's been discussed before that the scoring for overall competitions is based off your raw score for each puzzle and not based off of your final standing in each category. In past multi-puzzle competitions there have been winners of the overall puzzle who ranked lower in 3 catagories of 4 puzzles than the 2nd place finisher in the overall. Dig through the January competition thread for that discussion.

Also, the winner of the overall could have very well placed 5th in all the puzzles, very hypothetical ;)

Seriously, unicorns and dragons? How's a pirate monkey going to compete with the Wizarding World of Puzzle Pirates Mages?

There are also a lot of "specialists"

I have only once got excellent in distilling, I struggle to get CC4 never mind CC14. In IM I've never got a masterpiece (or even less than about 3 peices left. My shipwright hovers between GM and Leg, fine for producing expert but not good for competitions. I am however No 1 in the ocean in Alch.

I therefore spent the whole competition time doing alch in the hope of getting a tan monkey as I knew I had no chance of getting the coloured, I am sure many (most?) of the individual prize winners were the same.
