Portrait Background Limited Edition contest - Party Edition! (WINNERS ANNOUNCED) Reply to this Post
Reply with Quote

Ahoy again, everyone! It's portrait background time again!

Theme:

The theme for this background contest is PARRRRRTY! Pirate get-togethers, roistering, celebrations, parties... You might have the inn as your backdrop or a house, or a ship - whatever seems right for your party! You may choose any size of portrait - just ensure you provide the correct size image for your chosen background size.

Submissions: Entrants will create original backgrounds that are consistent with the theme and style of the game. The image must look sensible with characters placed on it in any of the orientations possible for its size.

Entries must fit the appropriate scale.

1-pirate backgrounds: 348 x 650

2-pirate backgrounds: 696 x 650

Large backgrounds: 1600 x 1170

Reworking entries: (to update an entry, please upload the latest version with the same file name as the previous version of the entry). If you want an alternative version rather than a replacement, multiple entries per artist are also acceptable. You can enter multiple times for any theme.

Only original art is accepted. You must create the images yourself. Plagiarized entries, photographs, and other unsuitable entries may be removed from the entry page without notice.

Upload your images to the YPPedia, name the file according to the naming scheme listed there, and post links to the thumbnails here for comment. If you want your pirate name to appear rather than your account name should you win, please post your pirate name at the bottom of the post containing the thumbnail.

Please put "partycontest" in the summary field so that we know which entries to consider when judging starts. Thank you! The summary field for the upload, then, should be:
{{partycontest-Portrait|Forumname}} (where "Forumname" is replaced by your own forum name!)

Judging: Quality of work, style, how well the background fits with the game's theme, and how well the placement of the portrait characters fit into the background are the primary determining factors.

The entries will be judged in the Three Rings offices by the artists and developers and the winner will be put into future releases as a Limited Edition portrait background. The portrait background may also be re-used for limited times later, and even (if appropriate) to be adopted as a longer-term or permanent portrait background, rather than a limited duration one. The same winning artist may be chosen more than once for different entries.

Submitted works are eligible for winning future contests. Artists who entered backgrounds in a previous contest: if they are eligible for the current contest, please enter them again! We would love to reconsider them. Likewise, if a background does not win, it can be submitted for future contests, as long as it fits within the theme of each contest.

Prizes: A winning entry will be included in the in-game list of available portrait backgrounds, usually for a limited duration. Anyone in the game can use it when it is available.

Each winning entrant will also receive a Puzzle Pirates mousepad and playing cards in the mail, a free copy of his/her portrait in-game, and a clothing item of her choice in the color(s) of her choice. The item cannot be the box edition Savvy Hat or anything Atlantean or indigo, but can be black or gold.

In the event of the same artist winning multiple months, an additional clothing item can be substituted for the mousepad and playing cards if the artist does not feel like having a household full of Puzzle Pirates Paraphernalia.

Deadline:
May 3rd 2009, 11:59pm game time

Suggestions: Make it look like it came right out of the game. Get your line weights down, and compare with existing portraits to be sure. Keep your lighting consistent with the lighting on the pirate portrait art. Choose a scene that many in the game would like to use. Take your time and rework, going to others for advice and critique.

Also, take note of the way some sizes get cropped.

Questions, discussion, entries and feedback can all be posted here. Good luck!

At the end of the last contest, I was asking about the feasibility of having entries to previous contests archived somewhere on YPPedia. I'd like to get the current entry page reset so that only the new ones are visible there. I've not done it before, and don't want to Break Stuff [tm].

Either of these approaches is fine - is anyone able to do this? Many thanks in advance!

Done. Entries from the prior four contests can be found here. If I get time tomorrow I may be able to go back and include contests from before those as well.

I had an idea, but wondered if it would only appeal to girls.. What about a Fancy bed, a fancy wardrobe (Off to the side a bit, but see-able), and some clothes spread out in the "What to wear to this party?" way?

Too 'girly'? I could even make it a double (Or make two) and use male and female clothes.

I noticed in the last portrait contest, entrants posted their works-in-progress for suggestions and ideas. May we do that again here? And if not here, is there another place where we may? I plan on entering (if life doesn't get in the way), but its my first entry, and I'd love some professional help. :)

Oh that sounds like a pretty portrait. I think you could make it work if you do both male and female clothing. Like maybe have the male clothing all set out nicely, but the female clothing in an array (us females do take a little longer to choose what to wear XD )

You should try going to google or yahoo or whichever your preferred search engine is and type in the theme for the portrait. Looking at some of the images that it brings up might get the gears working! ;)

Okay, I have an idea for a portrait, but before I spend too much time on it, I'd like honest opinion:

Roughly, its for a 1 or 2-pirate portrait, with un-buried treasure (inspired by the new Expeditions) in the background, and its raining (literally) poe and gems. The idea is that the pirate has struck it rich, and there's cause to celebrate.

But is that too much of a stretch on the "Party" theme?

So, um.. Question from a mouseless person:

Each winning entrant will also receive a Puzzle Pirates mousepad and playing cards in the mail, a free copy of his/her portrait in-game, and a clothing item of her choice in the color(s) of her choice.

The bolded.. could a person get, say, a mug or something instead? Just curious, as I'm sure I'm not the only one who discarded her stinky mouse when she got a tablet =)

Edit: And a rough draft =D

It is a two person, and yes, I see the floor error of whiteness =O

So I've never really considered entering the portrait contests, and haven't paid much attention to them in my career as a pirate. But my interest is perked, and I was thinking of reworking (and finishing) an entry I made for the easter doodles and turning it in for this contest.

This is the original image:

Clearly it would have to be resized, the dancers and eggs would have to be removed, etc, but I have it all saved in lots of layers, so reworking it will be easy, and I thought it made a really pretty scene.

So my question is, is this the kind of scene acceptable for a portrait background? Would anyone else be interested in seeing it completed and using it? Any suggestion for a noobie portrait maker?

tymuchly :)

I definitely like it-it stuck out to me when I first browsed the easel entries, too. I love the sky especially, and the trees. I'm trying to think of ways to make it more clearly a party... I'll tell you if I have any suggestions, but I definitely think you should enter the event. You might have to outline the trees and such to make it more like in-game art.

I definitely like it as well, very good. Maybe if you removed the couple in the middle and made it a Party Scene by putting more couples (that aren't in the way of where the original pirates would stand) and you'd just put maybe streamers going down from the trees, confetti maybe in places, it would possibly work. (Also, since I saw a person win a background with a picture with the gods or something of the sort, and put Ocean Masters dancing, then you could put "Party With The Gods" or something like that. I think that could really go well.)

Also, you need to compare your portrait with other winning backgrounds and make it seem in the same kind of quality as the other kinds then it'll definitely have a big chance of winning.

Just my personal opinion.

'Nother rough draft..

Fixed the naughty floor (Thanks AL!) and added the clothes, but haven't shaded them yet.. Going to add more clothes on TOP of the pile.. Also, how's my color scheme, good or bad? Gold/white sounded good to me, but um, I can't barely match my own clothes...

The floorboards look a lot neater now, however you may need to skew the texture you're using as currently the grain of the wood doesn't run with the floorboards.

The wall seems a little blocky to me, perhaps use something out of the game? Take a look in the Yppedia Housing section. I like the Cabin Entrance/Back Room Walls. Maybe a window too? Same goes for the wardrobe - here's a Fancy Wardrobe shot. The bed is quite good, that headboard carving isn't easy from that kind of angle...

I also think you need to emphasise the 'party' theme. Perhaps you could make it like a backstage dressing room with a mirror and a few candles? Little gold plaque on the wall - 'Very Important Pirate'?

Dunno, just throwing ideas out to you, hopefully some of them will be of use to you... =]

So here's a (very) rough draft of my idea, including the 2-pirate mask:

Kitt - I think you should definately enter a version of the picture for a portrait, if you do add other couples in it (which was mentioned a few posts ago) maybe they could be silhouettes in the background? But I think what you have is great, just doing the line work to make it look like it came out of the game and such. Keep up the great work :)

Ok, so I'm fiddling with the idea of a party boat. I've done a quick sketch to show where I hope to go with it.

I tried to avoid lanterns, mostly because I didn't want to 'the-guy-who-did-all-those-party-backgrounds-with-lanterns' guy. >.> I did try to incorporate the new colours though. Pirates partying may also be a good thing.

Your thoughts?

Ok, Took all this advice in, and don't have the time right this second to do the wardrobe. How is this floor and wall wise, though?

Going to add some more party-like features and wardrobe after school =)
